433.The Queen Dowager of Scots to Philip II. [Feb. 10. 1557–58.]

On 23d January your ambassador delivered the letters you gave him for us on 17th September, and also diligently declared your credence, whereto we replied. We doubt not it will be plain to your Serenity, when you understand it from him, that it is little to our pleasure that the peace desired by this country has been broken by England, in defence of which we have unwillingly taken up arms. Yet willingly we would see matters arranged and the peace established, as we have declared openly to your ambassador to report to your Serenity. Edinburgh, 4 Id. Feb.
