Certificate by Capt. William Hill and Edward Grove that, the Elias miscarrying at sea in her voyage to England from New York, himself and twenty of his company were saved in the Martin. Meeting Capt. David Lambert, commander of the Hopeful, they requested him to spare them 3 cwt. of bread and a barrel of beef, for which Mr. Walsall paid him 7l. 5s. [Ibid. No. 207.]

Warrant to the clerk of the ropeyard at Woolwich. Though we do not suspect any one person now belonging to the ropeyard of stealing or embezzling any of the stores therein, yet remembering the miscarriages of some late in the dockyard, for which they have been punished the last sessions at Maidstone, we order you to declare to all ropemakers, etc., and persons whatever frequenting the said yard that, if any of them have known or shall know of any theft or embezzlement of any of the stores appertaining thereto, they forthwith discover the same and we promise them a reward for the same. If any person seduced by others into matters of petty pilfering, etc., shall timely discover his complices, he shall have indemnity. You are carefully to regard what persons you employ in watching and warding, and shall fix this up in some convenient place in the yard that all persons may take notice thereof. [Draft. Ibid. Samuel Pepys to Mr. Reynolds, Clerk of the Barber-Surgeons' Company. You will inform the Wardens that, whoever goes into the Royal James, it ought to be with a condition that, in case Prince Rupert or the Earl of Sandwich should remove into her, then this person be contented to give up to their chirurgeons to come in and he to remove to the ship from which Prince Rupert or the Earl of Sandwich shall come.
