July 1668

July 4. Calculations of principal from accounts numbered. Total principal 295,853l. 12s. 8d. and total interest 28,823l. 3s. 7d. Endorsed, "Additional Aid," being probably moneys borrowed on the security thereof. [S.P. Dom., Car. II. 441, No. 38.]
July 8. Jonas Shish to the Navy Commissioners. A gentleman in Suffolk will furnish his Majesty with 100 loads of good long 4 and 3 inch plank for ready money. [S.P. Supplementary 137, No. 130.]
[July 9.] Particular of oars in the house of Thomas Thompson, oarmaker. (See Cal. S.P. Dom., 1668–69, p. 126.) [Ibid. No. 131.]
July 14. Jonas Shish to the Navy Commissioners. The frame of the London is set to rights and we have moulded some new timbers and the stern will be framed this week. I desire your warrant for carrying on the work. Four barges of timber are gone down to Woolwich from Mr. Moorehouse, and none come from him to Deptford, though the carrying on of all our work depends on large compass timber for the frame of the London. My son, John Shish, would know whether you desire he may go down to Portsmouth for bringing about the Sovereign or whether you will send a warrant to his deputy. [Ibid. No. 132.]
July 15. The King to the Earl of Manchester, Chancellor, and the ViceChancellor and Caput Senatus of the University of Cambridge. About the performance of exercises, etc., by persons obtaining mandates for degrees. (Calendared in Cal. S.P. Dom., 1667–68, p. 488.) [S.P. Dom., Car. II. 441, No. 39.]
July 18.
Deptford.
John Cox and J. Uthwat to the Navy Commissioners. Reporting on Mr. Vanderhove's parcel of Holland duck. [S.P. Supplementary 137, No. 133.]
July 21. Jonas Shish to the Navy Commissioners. For better employing the shipwrights at Deptford Yard, suggesting that any ship that is to be repaired in dry dock be sent there. —I understand that the Hampshire requires the greatest repairs. If you appoint her or any other, I will endeavour all possible dispatch in finishing her. No reed is left in the stores. [Ibid. No. 134.]
July 21.
Deptford.
John Cox and J. Uthwat to the Navy Commissioners. The wet dock here is grown up with mud, having not been cleared since its making, so that, whereas it would formerly receive fourth-rates of the greatest draft, a fifth-rate cannot now be taken in but at spring tides and, when in, they cannot wind in it. The season being good for clearing it, we offer it should be done. His Majesty has been at a continual extra charge in furnishing Deptford stores with twice-laid cordage and spun yarn in the transportation first of the junk from Deptford to Woolwich and back again after it is wrought, and often not to be had there when there has been haste for it. We offer that a short ground may be made in Brick Close at a small charge and a person contracted with for making twice-laid cordage and spun yarn at the same rates as at Woolwich to prevent the said charge of transportation. It has been likewise presented to some of the Board to have a shed built from the old crane here to the cellar by the waterside to receive the old cables and junk that lie on the quay, which will be a great security from embezzlement and protect it from the weather. [Ibid. No. 135.]
July 23.
Deptford.
John Cox to William Hewer. I had yesterday an order of the 18th to make out tickets for the eighty men discharged from the Charles into the Leopard. Pray send me down so many by Edward Lee and I shall send them back as soon as possible. The purser is at Portsmouth and the steward at Chatham so there can be no one's hand to them but mine. With note that the tickets were delivered to Edward Leigh. [Ibid. No. 136.]
July 28.
Deptford.
J. Uthwat to Col. Thomas Middleton. Giving the names of the two joiners, William Tayler and Robert Marsh, that complain against Thomas Cock, another joiner, for embezzling nails and deals from the Leopard at Erith. [Ibid. No. 137.]
July. Estimate by the Officers of the Yard at Deptford of the stores, over and above the timber and plank lately demanded by Mr. Shish, required for carrying on the service for the ensuing year. [Ibid. No. 138.]
