BOND 129 4 3 June 1651. Information that when Oxford was a King's garrison, he compounded with delinquents, and paid moneys for them, by direction of Sir Edw. Sydenham. That in the Essex insurrection, he sent a man and horse to Lord Goring, and was in person at Bow Bridge when held by the enemy. That he was at many private meetings at the Hoope Tavern, Leadenhall Street, plotting about the revolt of Capt. Batten and the fleet. That he conveyed moneys into France for the relief of Cavaliers, some of which was taken. That he concealed an annuity of 1,200l., and several sums due to the State which are in his custody, and paid several sums to Sir Edw. Sydenham, a delinquent, contrary to the order of the Council of State. That he is very familiar with delinquents, stands bound for them, conceals their letters, and conveys letters and intelligence to them beyond seas. 22

Information that when the Parliament forces under Col. Berrow in Hereford were routed, and fain to get over a river there for safety, he commanded that their boats should be sunk, or taken out of the river to prevent them, which he and his men did, and said they were rebels against the King. Also that he secretly delivered horses to some of the King's soldiers at Whitchurch, when Sir Hen. Lingen was Governor of Goodrich Castle, and committed several other acts of delinquency. 21 184

Chapman, waterman of Lambeth, in the last insurrection in Kent and Surrey, told him if he would fight for the King and Kent, he would give him a horse and arms, and used much speech to induce him to go; but finding he would not comply, he railed on him, and called him an Independent rogue. 21 185

Mr. Blackburne has 50l. of the State's money. Also Sir Robt. Barwick, a Commissioner of Array for the King, living at York, has a considerable estate not seized upon. Searle and Capt. Mugford, who engaged to prosecute it. This 9th Sept. I was summoned before the commissioners in Plymouth about the case, but was too ill to go, yet I gave the names of witnesses who could testify. I beg an order to Col. John Desborow, commander of the Western forces, for a speedy course therein, fearing the State may be abused and the guilty cleared. I suspect bribery, for Loveys was known by the whole county to be a notorious malignant, and his estate is worth above 800l. 129 31

That in 1648 they took depositions to prove that in 1643 he marched on horseback, with sword and pistols, to the King's garrisons, and encouraged others to do so. That his land is worth 400l. a year, but has rent charges of 150l. They have let it at 55l., the tenant to pay the said charges, assessments, free quarter, and the 1/5 to Englefield's wife and children. 129 126

Issac Wilmot, that he is a delinquent, and that when the King's party came to Newport in 1643, to make it a garrison, he remained there, and was employed by them; that Major-General Skippon's forces approaching against the town when the King's forces lay there, he deserted his habitation, and went with the King's forces to Banbury, remained there three months, and was employed under the governor as a clerk. 129 21 127 190
