30. John Langnaver, Melchoir Link, and others, to the Queen. Request a confirmation of their privileges in the mines. Lat.

Indenture of assignment from Thomas Walsingham, of Chiselhurst, and William Crowmer to Thomas Randolph, Esq., of Letters Patents for the custody of the Manor and Hundred of Middleton and Merden, co. Kent, at the rent of one hundred pounds per annum, to be paid to Anne Walsingham, the intended wife of the said Tho. Randolph, during her life, from and after the day of his decease. [Case B. Eliz. 34. Wm. Herlle to same. Applies to have a grant of the office of Surveyor of Foreigners, towards whom much vigilance is necessary.
Oct. 3 35. Same to the Queen. Solicits to be appointed Surveyor of Foreigners. Proposes that every stranger, on his entering or going out of the kingdom, should receive a ticket with a seal attached.

36. Sir Tho. Gresham to Burghley. Sends the counterbond for the City, which must be signed and sealed. Reminds him of his suit for removing the Lady Mary Grey.

37. Lady Mary Keys (Grey) to same. Prays to be restored to the Queen's favour; God having now removed the occasion of Her Majesty's justly conceived displeasure towards her. [It is remarkable that in all her previous letters Lady Mary signed her own name "Graye;" but the moment her husband died she signed herself by his name, "Keys."]
Oct. 8. 38. Sir. Tho. Gresham to same. Has sent for the City counterbond, as the post departs that night.
Oct. 8 ? Lisle Cave to his brother. Expressing his joy at receiving some letters from him by Philip. Fr. [See France, Vol. li., 1571.]
Oct. 11. 39. Extract from the examination of the Duke of Norfolk as to conveyance of letters to and from the Queen of Scots, by means of H. Goodere.
Oct. 12. 40. Certificate of the constables of Bullington Hundred, co. Oxford, of watch and search made for rogues and vagabonds in that Hundred, but none were found therein.

44. Certificate of vagabonds taken within the Hundred of Fawlesley, and whipped at Daventry, co. Northampton, according to the statute. [Six out of the seven thus whipped being females.]

Oct. 14. Grant of Arms to Henry Draper, of Colbrook, Middlesex, by Robt. Cooke, Clarencieux. [In Grant of Arms, No. 10.]
47. Declaration made to Lord Burghley, by Lord Cobham, of the matter with which he has been charged, in which his ungracious brother, Thomas Cobham, was touched; as to letters brought secretly from Flanders for the Bishop of Ross, which, if known, would be the undoing of the D. of Norfolk.

52. Thomas Asheton to same. Dissatisfaction among the people with regard to Norfolk's affair. The Papists find too much favour at Court. Recommends Sir Andrew Corbett, who is the only fit and trustworthy man to have charge in those parts.

53. Sir Rowland Haywarde, Lord Mayor, to the Council. Has assembled the aldermen at the house of Mr. Alderman Allyn (Lord Mayor elect), and they have agreed to the orders inclosed. Incloses,

56. H. Goodere to Burghley. Confesses at length the particulars of his communications with the Queen of Scots, the Bishop of Ross, and the Duke of Norfolk. His correspondence with the latter in cypher. Protests his innocence of any treasonable designs.
Oct. 30. 57. Examination of John Hamelin, servant to the Earl of Northumberland at the time of the rebellion in the North, as to a message brought to him and the Earl of Westmoreland, by Havers, the Duke of Norfolk's man.

59. i. Power of attorney from Morgan Robyns to Mr. Hawes, son of Alderman Hawes, to act for him in Spain; attested by Don Gerard Despes, the Spanish Ambassador, and the Bishop of Ross.
59. ii. Examination of John Hawes relative to his conveying a letter received of one Morgan, to the Duchess of Feria, in Spain, supposed to be from the Queen of Scots. 31 Oct. 1571.
59. iii. Dorothy Essex (the Duchess of Feria's woman) to Mr. Hawes. Her Grace has answered the Queen of Scots' letter. Particulars of Morgan's matter. The King of Spain has been gracious to him for the Queen of Scots' sake. From Squiriall [Escurial].
Oct. 31.] 60. Intelligence by Rowland Brittan respecting the designs of the King of Spain on Ireland. Conveyance of letters from the Queen of Scots to King Phillip, by John Hawes.
Oct. 31. 61. Sir Henry Cryspe and others to the Council. Have been to Sandwich and Dover, and selected the best prisoners from the freebooters there, and the remainder are to be sent out of the realm. Particulars of the goods seized and now in safe custody.
Oct. 62. Note of repairs done within the Castle of Windsor, from June 6, 1570, to October 31, 1571, and of the repairs to be done in the following spring.
