August 1574

Aug. 9. Bruges. 60. Rich. Fox, mercer, to Lord Burghley. Edw. Duffield, who was leaving for Brussels, gave me a letter to send to you speedily, and said he would write as he heard news. The English post was gone, and as the Dutch post might intercept a letter sent to you, I enclose it in one to John Taylor, merchant. He has since sent another to you, and bade me inquire after John Gy and Adrian Butcher, who he believes are come to England with malicious intent. No evil man could pass in or out without your knowledge, if the officers on the coast did their duty; yet unprofitable people of our nation daily come hither and go into England.
I know not Edw. Duffield's character, but he has capacity, is in a place where he can hear much, and professes a wish to gather and impart it you. You will judge of him, and until I hear further from you, I will not deal further with them; there are so many wolves in this country clothed in lamb skins.
The Comendador is come to Antwerp, and many of his horsemen are about here. It was reported that the states of Flanders assembled here consented to lend the King 1,300,000 guilders, but it is unlikely, for 500 or 600 horsemen came, as they were sitting, to the town, and were refused entrance, though they remained a day and night before the ports. It is said 2,000 Swiss are coming; the country grumbles much at being so overlaid with soldiers. If the fleet come in prosperity, our enemies brag they will take England unprovided. I pray God to defend the Queen and Council from all subtle conspiracy. [2¾ pages.]
