August 1578

Aug. 29.
The Court.
113. Sir Thomas Heneage to Sec. Walsingham. Mr. Somers, the bearer, brings you less than he would, or were convenient, if there were due regard either to the present or for to come, but we stand neither upon counsel nor forecast; if we prosper, it must be, as our custom is, by miracle; we have cause to use the prayer of the Church, Da pacem Domine, &c., Quin non est alius, &c., so I pray, since we provide so little, we may pray more.
For all matters concerning your negotiation there, I refer you to Mr. Somers, who understands them better than myself. Touching the Court, our old humours do not grow weak by age, but increase by nourishment, and he is not a courtier six days but can learn how to make himself acceptable. My Lords, with the rest of the Council, have most considerately straigthened divers obstinate and arch Papists that would not come to church; and by some good means, Her Majesty has been brought to believe well of divers zealous and loyal gentlemen of Suffolk and Norfolk, whom the foolish Bishop had maliciously complained of to her, as hinderers of her proceedings, and favourers of Presbyterians and Puritans.
