LIBRARIES AND RECORD OFFICES IN THE UNITED KINGDOM

This section covers libraries and record offices known to hold material relating to London before c. 1670. In general such material is derived from family collections and deposits; sometimes the source of a deposit is not known. In some cases access to, or use of, deposited family material is restricted. Records in these repositories forming part of the archives of institutions which held property in the city are covered elsewhere in this survey by the entries for such institutions, and are not referred to again here.

London material in these locations was identified in three ways:

i. by means of the topographical index at the National Register of Archives, which identifies only collections described in lists deposited at the Register and deemed to contain a 'substantial' body of material on a particular place;

ii. by visiting libraries and record offices in London and the Home Counties and major collections of MSS elsewhere in England, and using lists and indexes available there;

iii. by writing to all other county record offices and major libraries in the United Kingdom. (fn. 1)

It was not possible to visit many record offices and libraries holding material on London before c. 1670, but it is always stated when this was the case. The accounts of those not visited are based on information provided by the archivists and librarians, and on lists available in London. Some of the material in these unvisited locations said to relate simply to 'London' may not, in fact, concern the city; in other instances such material may relate to specific localities in the city which are not mentioned in the available lists and indexes.

Descriptions of the collections are arranged as follows: London libraries and record offices (CLRO and PRO form separate sections, 1– 15 and 436–453, because of their very different character); other libraries and record offices in England (arranged under the name of the place for libraries and the name of the county for CROs); libraries and record offices in Wales; Scotland; Northern Ireland. For collections in USA see 518–528.

454. London, Bishopsgate Institute

The institute was founded in 1894 and endowed with properties formerly belonging to the parish of St. Botolph Bishopsgate. The reference library has a large collection of deeds, 16C to 19C, mostly uncatalogued and mostly relating to the Bishopsgate area, which probably include the title deeds to the site and endowment (45 and elsewhere). The catalogued collections are as follows:

a. Crosby Hall Deeds, 16C (64), transcribed in C. W. F. Goss, Crosby Hall (1908): in same box, papers, incl. view, transcripts, 17C to 19C (152).

b. Deeds 1–172, with card catalogue, 16C to 19C. Deeds before c. 1670 relate to the following parishes and areas:

455. London, British Library, Department of Manuscripts (indexed collections)

Many items in this collection deriving from the archives of religious houses and other institutions are described in other entries of this survey. In addition, there are many records derived from a wide variety of sources which are of value for the topographical study of most parts of the city before the Great Fire. These include deeds, rentals, surveys, inventories, petitions, diaries, miscellaneous papers, plans and drawings, and antiquarian or historical collections. The most convenient form of access is via the Amalgamated Index on cards kept in the corridor leading to the Students' Room. This index is made up from the indexes in the printed catalogues of collections (for which see M. A. E. Nickson, The British Library: Guide to the catalogues and indexes of the Department of Manuscripts, 1982), but does not include items from the indexes to additions made between 1756 and 1782 and from 1946 onwards, for which reference should be made to the individual catalogues. London items will be found in the Amalgamated Index under the general heading 'London: City and County' and with reference to more specific locations under the general heading 'London parishes'. It should be noted that the printed indexes, and hence the Amalgamated Index, are often less specific as to locations than the catalogue entries to which they refer, so that many references to particular parishes in the catalogues will simply be covered by the heading 'London' in the index. A detailed index to charters and rolls acquired up to the end of 1900 will be found in Index to the Charters and Rolls in the Department of Manuscripts, British Museum 2 vols., ed.

H. J. Ellis and F. B. Bickley (1900, 1912), which is incorporated in the Amalgamated Index. Several religious houses near London appear in the Amalgamated Index under what may be unexpected headings. Thus, for Clerkenwell Priory, see Finsbury; for Haliwell Priory, see Shoreditch; for St. Giles's Hospital, see Holborn; and for Stratford-at-Bow, see Poplar.

Formed from the former London County RO and Middlesex RO. The reference and index systems of the 2 original repositories have been retained. More details are to be found in separate files on individual accessions. The archive of St. Thomas's Hospital (described under 226) is listed and indexed separately. For probate records see 529, 530.

a. London County RO (Index Card list 3). Refs., mostly 17C, to properties in 2, 18, 19, 23, 43, 46, 53, 62, 145, 152, 156, St. Katharine by the Tower, St. Martin le Grand (incl. alleys), Fenchurch Street, Fleet Street, Gunpowder Alley, Houndsditch, Newgate Market, Old Street, (West) Smithfield, Watling Street. See also E/HOD (Hodson) and E/TD (Tyrwhitt-Drake): unindexed refs. to 20.

b. Middlesex RO (Index Card Lists 1, 'Parish Index . . . City of London', and 2, 'Metropolitan parishes and Westminster.' Some material may be indexed in both. Both also include refs. to 'Extra-mural collections' (EMC) in other record offices, and to Sessions Rolls (SR), but these and other refs. not relating to property are not noted here). Indexed refs., mostly 17C, to 42, 43, 45, 152. See also files on Acc. 349, Radcliffe of Hitchin (deeds, etc., 16C to 17C, concerning 42, 45, 85, 87, Old Fish Street, Trinity Lane) and Acc. 446, Paget/Anglesey Collection (deeds, etc., 16C to 17C, concerning 30, 54, 155; also notes on deeds, etc., 14C to 17C, concerning 25, 152, not deposited).

459. London, Guildhall Library, Manuscripts Department (main MS series)

GL holds several complete or nearly complete archives relating to the city of London, and numerous single documents or small groups, in many cases deposited by B.R.A. but otherwise of undiscoverable origin. The main MS series, numbered for the most part in accession order, is described in the Numerical Catalogue and the Card Catalogue; both contain the same information but the latter is arranged according to the library's London subject classification. The most recent accessions at any time may be uncatalogued, or listed in the Numerical Catalogue only. There is also a series of Additional MSS, consisting chiefly of deeds, listed in a separate catalogue in GL: see 460, below. The contents of the principal deposited archives with material relevant to this enquiry are described elsewhere in this survey: they comprise the records of St. Paul's Cathedral (70–77), the bishop of London's estate (78), livery companies (16–69), city parish, ward, and charity records (275–382, 416), and several hospitals, trusts, and smaller bodies. For probate records see 529, 530.

See P. E. Jones and R. Smith, A Guide to the Records in the Corporation of London Record Office and the Guildhall Library Muniment Room (1950).

a. Deeds.

The deeds in the main MS series, including deeds in the archives listed above, are indexed in the Card Catalogue under L 86 by street, or, when the street is unknown, by parish. That index does not cover the London parochial charities deeds (382), the Additional MSS series (460), most deeds from the early part of the numerical sequence (MSS 1–7137), and any uncatalogued accessions. The following indexes are intended to supplement the GL index, for deeds and similar material dating from before c. 1670 that do not belong to archives or groups described elsewhere in this survey. The first is arranged by parish, and covers all such deeds catalogued by 30 September 1983 (MSS 1–20578). The second, arranged by streets and other localities, covers all such deeds in MSS 1–7137 which cannot be indexed by parish, since some at least of these are not covered under L 86. The L 86 street-index should also be used, therefore, for deeds among MSS 7138–20578 which cannot be indexed by parish.

460. London, Guildhall Library, Manuscripts Department (Additional Manuscripts)

This series comprises some 1187 documents (chiefly deeds, 13C to 19C) deposited in GL and CLRO from various sources before 1948. They are described in a numerically-arranged catalogue but are not indexed. The series includes major parts of the archives of the parishes of St. Andrew Hubbard, St. Benet Paul's Wharf, St. Botolph Aldersgate, St. Mary Bothaw, St. Stephen Walbrook, and St. Swithin, and a few documents that are clearly from other parish archives. Where such a provenance can be ascertained the documents are described in this survey under the archive to which they belong. The series also contains documents which may have belonged to the same or other archives, but which cannot be so ascribed with certainty: these are indexed below, with the rest of the series, which has no known provenance. The following index, based on the descriptions in the catalogue of Additional Manuscripts, is to deeds and similar material before c. 1670. The documents are known as GL, Add. MS 1, etc.

462. London, Lambeth Palace Library

Records concerning the London properties of religious bodies are dealt with in the entries concerning those bodies. For references with the prefix CM, see D. M. Owen, A catalogue of Lambeth Manuscripts 889 to 901 (Carte Antique et Miscellanee) (1968). Other relevant catalogues are noted below. See also 529f.

a. Deeds etc: CM II/4: deed, 16C (20). CM VI/95: copy of sentence in tithe dispute, 16C (53). CM 27/3: assignment, 17C (Bell Alley). COMM XIb/12: lease, 1609 (114).

b. Records of church estates during the Interregnum. For the records of the administration of the former lands and impropriate tithes of bishops and of deans and chapters over the period c. 1650–1660, see J. Houston, Catalogue of the Ecclesiastical Records of the Commonwealth, 1643–1660, in the Lambeth Palace Library (1968), 66–87. These include minute books and day books recording decisions to grant leases; 'Augmentation Order Books' (records of orders classified according to the committees which issued them); a schedule and abstract of leases; particulars of rents and revenues. There appear to be no counterparts of leases for London properties granted in this period, but for a lease of 1609 catalogued in this series, see above, a. Where appropriate the contents of these records are arranged by counties and most are indexed with reference to place or county (incl. London). Parliamentary surveys at Lambeth which concern London (all valuations of benefices) are indexed in the catalogue. The following item, formerly in the St. Paul's Cathedral archive (WD 51), is not covered by the printed catalogue: Add. Comm. 1, transcript of minute book of persons appointed to deal with bishops' lands, 1647–55 (47, 54, 59, 63, bishop of London's palace, Holborn, Whitefriars).

c. Lists and assessments. MS 272: lists of house valuations and tithe assessments for most city parishes, 1638; substantially printed as The Inhabitants of London in 1638, 2 vols., ed. T. C. Dale (Society of Genealogists, London, 1931). CM VIII/18 and 25: lists of tithe valuations and numbers of communicants for most city parishes, early 17C and 1634. CM VIII/16 and CM IX/54: tithe valuations and names of inhabitants, 1634, and 1638 (93).

d. Papers concerning the London tithe cause, 1634–9. In addition to the specific items noted in c, above, a number of more general items concerning this matter are described in the catalogue entries for CM VIII/ 1–50 and CM IX/1–89.
