Mr. Solicitor delivereth a Message from the King, concerning Sir Edm. Sawyer.

Mr. Bankes reporteth from the Committee for Tonage and Poundage; particularly, concerning Sir Edm. Sawyer, Mr. Dawes his Examination, and Sir Ed. Sawers Answers.

Manwaringes Submission.

A Message from the Lords, by Serjeant Crew and Serjeant Berkeley; That, it being Part of Dr. Manwaringes Judgment, to make an Acknowlegement in both Houses, according to a Draught thereof drawn there, a Copy whereof now sent down, he hath accordingly done the same there; and being now in the Custody of the Warden of the Fleete, is ready to do the like here.

The Messenger called in, and told ; We are ready to receive his Submission, according to the Copy, which hath been read.

Sir Edw. Coke, from the Committee, reporteth a Draught in Writing, of the Message to his Majesty: Which allowed, and to be delivered by Mr. Speaker.

Access to the King.

Sir Raphe Freeman, Sir H. Mildmay, Sir Henry Fane, Sir Wm. Herberte, Sir Ro. Palmer, Sir Tho. Badger, to desire Access to his Majesty, for Mr. Speaker, and with what Number his Pleasure is he shall come unto him.

Manwaring's Submission.

Dr. Manwaring, called in,and kneeling at the Bar, read his Submission out of the Paper: which was as followeth:

May it please this honourable House : I do here, in all Sorrow of Heart, and true Repentance, acknowlege those many Errors and Indiscretions, which I have committed, in preaching and publishing those two Sermons of mine, which I called,

" Religion and Allegiance," and my great Fault, in falling upon this Theme again, and handling the same, rashly, scandalously, and unadvisedly, in mine own Parish Church of St. Gyles in the Fields, the fourth of May last. I do humbly acknowlege those Three Sermons to have been full of many dangerous Passages, and Inferences, and scandalous Aspersions, in most Parts of the same; and I do humbly acknowlege the just Proceedings of this honourable House against me, and the just Sentence and Judgment passed upon me by the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, for my great Offence; and I do, from the Bottom of my Heart, crave Pardon of God, the King, this honourable House, the Church, and the Commonwealth in general, and those worthy Persons, adjudged to be reflected upon by me in particular, for these great Offences and Errors.

The Committee for Tonage and Poundage to sit presently; and to take Consideration of his Majesty's . . by Mr. Solicitor, and what fit to be done concerning Sir Edm. Sawyer, and Sir S. Harvey.

Tampering with a Witness.

Mr. Bankes reporteth to the House, from the Committee for Tonage and Poundage, concerning Sir Edm. Sawyer, about making a new Book of Rates. - That Sir Edm. Sawyer (as was alleged by Mr. Dawes, and not absolutely denied by Sir Edm.) that Sir Edm. came to Mr. Dawes his House, and asked him, if he had been sent for to this House about this Matter; and he answering, No, he said, he thought he should; and thereupon Sir Edm. told him, if he were, he should not there be examined upon Oath, and therefore he should not need to speak of any thing which had passed between them.

Sir Edm. Sawyer, called in to answer for himself, confesseth, he went to Mr. Dawes' House, and asked him some Questions; but denyeth, that, to his Remembrance, he advised Mr. Dawes, that he was not to answer upon Oath, and therefore he should not need to speak of any thing which had passed between them.

Member expelled, &c.

Upon Question, Sir Edm. Sawyer, for this Offence to the House, in advising Mr. Dawes, as aforesaid, to be committed to the Tower, and to be turned out of the House; and a new Writ, for a Choice in his Place.

2ly, To be committed to the Tower, during the Pleasure of this House.

3ly, The House declareth him to be unworthy ever to serve as a Member of this House.

The other Part of the Charge against Sir Edm. Sawyer to be reported upon Monday Morning.
