April 8 Lord Treasurer Southampton's warrant to the sheriff of co. Oxford to hasten the payment to Sir George Carteret, Treasurer of the Navy, of the three months already due on the assessment of the 1,200,000l. as by Act of Parliament, the said assessment as far as concerns said county being assigned for the provision of stores for the Navy. "I am very earnestly to pray you to correspond with Sir George Carterett ... and to pay to him from time to time all the moneys you receive upon that accompt, he having Privy Seals and orders already to strike tallies in the Exchequer for your discharge." April 10 Warrant from Treasurer Southampton to the Customs Commissioners transmitting two papers of the 5th inst., the one signed by Signor Ruy Telles de Menezes, and the other by Sir Augustin Coronell, importing their desires concerning the King of Portugal's duties on the four ships lately arrived from Brazil, "which wee desire you would effectually observe and pursue and that you be carefull to take good and sufficient security for the same and permitt such person as they shall appoint to state the accompts and weights of the goods brought in the said shipps." April 12 Treasurer Southampton and Lord Ashley to the Customs Commissioners concerning the complaints made by Edward Bushell and William Bird, Agents of the Brazil Company, concerning disorders lately acted by some persons in removing several chests of sugar out of the Customs storehouses and forcing open the locks set upon the doors of said storehouses for the security of the Brazil Company's duties. Desire them to discover the authors of such disorders and to take special care for the future to prevent the like; not permitting any entry to pass nor any goods to be delivered which came out of the four ships from Brazil till the said agents be satisfied for the duties thereon due to said Company. April 18 Warrant from Treasurer Southampton to the Customs Commissioners to permit Stephen Fox to ship for Scotland 14,500l. for the paying of the forces in Scotland, as part of the 20,000l. directed to be sent thither for that purpose, whereof 5,500l. is being remitted by bills of exchange. April 21 Sir Philip Warwick to [the Customs Commissioners] coveying Treasurer Southampton's decision concerning the prosecutions of certain [Scotch] ships under arrest, viz.: the "Lamb," of Leith, John Taylor master; the "Edinburgh," of Kinghorn, Patrick Wallis, master; the "Margott," of London, Andrew Gray master; the "Job," of Pittemweem ("Pattenwend"), Geo. Treasurer Southampton to Sir John Lowther, Sheriff of Cumberland, in answer to a letter of the 12th inst. from said Lowther and the Justices of the Peace, mentioning the complaint of the high constables at the public sessions touching the receipt of the Usurper's coin upon payment of the monthly assessment. For the reason given by the Justices (viz. that much of the money of that stamp was received by the constables for the last three months' assessment before the second proclamation issued forth which restrained the taking of it to the 1st of March, and before they had any notice thereof) it will be accepted at the Receipt, in payment, if it be good silver. But for the future no such allowance of it is to be expected. Desires them, therefore, to hasten the payments of their moneys into the Receipt, the King's occasions being urgent and pressing. "Wee have signed the letters you desired to the severall sheriffs of the counties whereout the citty hath their security for the 200,000l. intended to be by them [the city] lent unto his Majesty whereof you have yet furnisht not 100,000l. which disappoints his Majesty's affaires very much. And therefore by late letters he hath recommended to you the advance and compleating that summe. Wee would not seeme to believe that the citty will fall short of supplying soe small a summe but this we pray you to observe (whome his Majesty hath entrusted to receive the loane from the citizens) that in case the whole 200,000l. be not completed by them that you pay such assignments as are struck upon you out of the first moneys that shall this next three monethes be paid in from the counties untill the 200,000l. be compleat.
