Tuesday, January 13. Present:—Lord Monson, Mr. Plumer, Mr. Pitt, Mr. Leveson Gower, Lord Dupplin, Mr. Fane.

Jamaica.

Read an Order of the Lords of the Committee of Council, dated the 2nd December, 1746, referring to this Board a letter from Mr. Trelawney, Governor of Jamaica, to the Duke of Newcastle, transmitting copy of an address from the Council and Assembly of that Island to the said Governor, desiring that the judicature of the Court of Chancery of that Island may be vested in commissioners, to be appointed by his Majesty for that purpose.

South Carolina.

Read a letter from Mr. Colleton, one of the Council of South Carolina, dated at Exmouth, in Devonshire, December 29th, 1746, in answer to one from the Secretary of this Board, relating to his return to his seat in the Council of that province.

Virginia.

Read a letter from Sir William Gooch, Baronet, Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, to the Board, dated at Williamsburg, September 1st, 1746, inclosing an account of his Majesty's revenue of 2s. per hogshead, etc., arising within that Colony, from 25th October, 1745, to 25th April, 1746, also transmitting:—
Account of his Majesty's revenue of quit rents, from 25th April, 1745, to 25th April, 1746.

Jamaica.

The draught of a report to the Lords of the Committee upon the address of the Council and Assembly of Jamaica, having been prepared, as ordered by yesterday's minutes, was laid before the Board, agreed to, and ordered to be transcribed.

South Carolina.

Read a letter from Mr. George Hunter, Surveyor General of his Majesty's lands in South Carolina, also Inspector and Comptroller of his Majesty's quit rents, etc., to the Board, dated at Charles Town, September 1st, 1746, inclosing the following papers, viz.:—
Copy of Mr. Hunter's petition to Mr. Glen, Governor of South Carolina, dated 9th January, 1745–6.
Extracts of the minutes of Council of South Carolina, dated 24th January, 1745–6, concerning Mr. Hunter's petition.
Lists of grants passed in South Carolina, from the 29th of April to the 30th of October, 1745. Report No. 5.
Lists of grants passed in South Carolina, from the 29th October, 1745, to the 30th of April, 1746. Report No. 6.

Ordered that copies of the said letter, of Mr. Hunter's petition to Governor Glen, and of the extract from the minutes of Council, be prepared, and that the same be sent with a letter from the Secretary, to Mr. Scrope, Secretary to the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury, in order to be laid before that Board.

New Hampshire.

Read an Order of the Lords of the Committee of Council, dated the 2nd of December, 1746, directing the Board to examine and report upon the case of the Assembly of New Hampshire's refusing to admit five new members into their House, who had been elected in pursuance of the Governor's writs.

Ordered that a state of the case be prepared and sent to the Attorney and Solicitor General, for their opinion thereon.

South Carolina.

Read a letter from John Beare to David Godin, dated Lisbon, September 5th, 1746, signifying that Mr. Hill, one of the Council of South Carolina, died in that city the 13th of August last, which was presented to the Board by Mr. Morley.

Thursday, January 15. Present:—Mr. Plumer, Mr. Leveson Gower, Lord Dupplin, Mr. Fane.

Miscellanies.

The Secretary laid before the Board an account of the incidental charges of this office from Christmas, 1744, to Lady Day, 1745, amounting in the whole to three hundred, forty six pounds, eighteen shillings and five pence halfpenny; and a letter to the Lords of the Treasury, desiring payment thereof, and of the salaries due to the Secretary and under officers for the same time, was agreed to and signed.

Jamaica.

The draught of a report upon the Address of the Council and Assembly of Jamaica, having been transcribed, as ordered by yesterday's minutes, was laid before the Board and signed.

Wednesday, January 21. Present:—Mr. Plumer, Mr. Pitt, Mr. Leveson Gower, Lord Dupplin.

Bahamas.

Read a letter from Mr. Tinker, Governor of the Bahama Islands, dated at Providence, July 14th, 1746, referring to the bearer of it for his answers to the queries sent him by the Board.

Ordered that the Secretary write to Major Pepper, who brought the letter, and desire his attendance this day sen'night [Wednesday, January 28th].

Barbados.

Leeward Islands.

The draught of the report to the Lords of the Committee of Council, proposing Edward Legge, Esquire, to be of the Council in the Islands of Barbados and Antigua, during the continuation of his command of his Majesty's ships in those seas, ordered to be prepared by the minute of the 23rd of December last, was agreed to, transcribed and signed.

Thursday, January 22. Present:—Lord Monson, Mr. Plumer, Mr. Leveson Gower, Lord Dupplin.

South Carolina.

The Secretary laid before the Board the following publick papers, transmitted from South Carolina to Mr. Fury, agent for that province, viz.:—
Minutes of Council, from the 17th December, 1743, to the 13th of December, 1745.
Journal for the Upper House of Assembly, for the years 1744 and 1745.
Journal of the Assembly, from the 20th of February, 1743–4, to the 17th of June, 1746.
Twenty-three Acts, passed in South Carolina, between March, 1744–5, and June, 1746.

Ordered that the said Acts be sent to Mr. Lamb, for his opinion thereon, in point of law.

The draught of a letter to his Grace the Duke of Newcastle, with a state of the Council in South Carolina, received with a letter from Governor Glen, of the 4th of October last, was ordered to be prepared.

Trade.

Africa.

Ordered that the Secretary write to the Secretary of the Admiralty, to desire him to move the Lords Commissioners of that Board, that if they have received any informations relating to the state of trade to Africa, and the condition of the forts and settlements there, since those transmitted hither by their lordships' order in November, 1744, that they will please to communicate to them such parts thereof, as they shall judge proper for their information.

The draught of a letter to his Grace the Duke of Newcastle, mentioned in the preceding minute, was laid before the Board, transcribed and signed.

Massachusets.

Read a letter from Mr. Willard, Secretary of the Massachusets Bay, to the Secretary of this Board, dated at Boston, in November, 1746, transmitting:—
Minutes of Council, from the 5th of September, 1744, to the 26th of February, 1745–6.
Minutes of Assembly, from the 10th of October, 1744, to the 20th of April, 1746.
Twenty three Acts, passed at Boston, between the 29th of June, 1745, and the 10th of January, 1745–6.
Fourteer Acts, passed at Boston, between 28th of June and the 13th of September, 1746.

Wednesday, January 28. Present:—Mr. Plumer, Mr. Leveson Gower, Lord Dupplin, Mr. Fane.

Bahamas.

Major Pepper, mentioned in the minutes of Wednesday last, attending, as desired, informed the Board that the forts in the Bahamas were in a very good condition, but, that as to what concerned the civil government, he could give no information, being an utter stranger thereto.

Thursday, January 29. Present:—Lord Monson, Mr. Plumer, Mr. Pitt.

Newfoundland.

Read a letter from Captain Joseph Gledhill, dated Placentia, October 9th, 1746, giving an account of the state of the garrison there, and of the want they were in of all necessaries; as also complaining that no ships of war had called there these five years last past.

Ordered that an extract of the said letter be made, and the draught of one prepared, for transmitting the same to the Duke of Newcastle.
