on Col. Edward Powell's petition for a grant of
the impost on wine in Antigua, ut supra, p. 1867.
On the 10th Sept., 1668, during the government of
William, Lord Willoughby, an Act of Assembly
was passed in Antigua for several uses as therein,
and for defraying other public contingent charges
of the government. The said Act is yet in force;
and the impost is yearly raised and applied towards
the maintenance of the government by order of
the Governor with the advice and consent of the
Council and one of the Assembly. It amounts,
usually to 200l. per an. As it is appropriated by
the Act to the support of the government the King
may direct to what particular uses it may be applied
pursuant to said Act. Whether such disposition [to
petitioner] would be so pursuant or not is submitted:
or alternatively the direction may be left to the Chief
Governor [of the Leeward Islands] now upon the
place; and some other suitable reward be appointed
to petitioner. |
