Aug. 1. Warrant dated Hampton Court, under the sign manual of the Prince of Wales as Guardian of the Kingdom, to James, Earl of Carnarvon, late Paymaster General of the Forces Abroad, to assign and transfer the sum of 2,515l. 19s.d. and 26l. 9s.d. of South Sea Stock remaining in your name for the use of the public to the services following: viz. 1,642l. 10s. 0d. for the 30 persons that went to North America in 1711 with Lieutenants' commissions and upon Ensigns' pay, as in full of their said pay to 1712 Dec. 23 upon bills of exchange drawn by Brigadier Hunter, Governor of New York, for that purpose; 899l. 19s. 3d. to the Staff Officers of the Garrison of Dunkirk in part of 2,952l. for their pay to 24 Aug. 1713 pursuant to the late Queen Anne's warrant dated 24 Oct. 1713: all by reason that the Earl of Oxford when Lord Treasurer by warrant dated 1713–14 Feb. 11 directed the said Earl of Carnarvon to assign and transfer 35,000l. South Sea Stock then remaining in his name for the use of the public to sundry persons as in a list therein referred to, as in part of their demands for offreckonings; and likewise the Duke of Shrewsbury when Lord Treasurer by his warrant dated 12 Aug. 1714 similarly authorised said Earl of Carnarvon to assign and transfer a further 81,661l. 3s.d. of South Sea Stock to sundry persons as in a list therein as in part of their demands for offreckonings: and it appears that 2,515l. 19s.d., part of the stock referred to, has not been assigned or transferred by reason that upon examination of the accounts of offreckonings it appears that the said sum cannot be safely paid on the account of those Regiments to which the same was intended to be paid [and therefore now remains at the Treasury Lords' disposal]. William Lowndes to the Navy Treasurer. The Treasury Lords direct you to raise 60,698l. by an absolute sale to that amount of tallies and orders on Land Tax anno 1716 to the Bank of England at par “and to negotiate the said loan with them at an interest after the rate of 4 per cent. from the day the sale shall be made.” The said sum is to be applied to the services following:

Aug. 2. William Lowndes to the Customs Commissioners to send an officer to the lodgings of the Ambassador from Tripoli in Jermain Street to seal his goods in order to their transport. Out Letters (General) XXII, p. 94.
Same to same. My Lords have read your account of the seizure by the Customs officers at Padstow of a considerable quantity of tin in small slabs on board a French vessel, being over eight hundred-weight. My Lords direct you to take care that if this seizure is made for a cause relating to the Customs it be duly prosecuted. Ibid., p. 95.

Prefixing: letter from the Duke of Bolton, Lord Chamberlain of the Household, to the Treasury Lords dated July 27 last. It is the King's pleasure that the following works and alterations be made at Hampton Court, viz. two doorways instead of windows in the young Princesses' lodgings with presses, shelves and drawers; a doorway for the Prince of Wales into the Gardens; the woodyard to be parted and some sheds set up with new doorways. Likewise to make a new door for the Lords of the Bedchamber to the Prince of Wales as also for completing the Parapet Wall of the Privy Garden next the Thames and for fitting up and repairing the fire engines and providing all necessary utensils for them. Prefixing: a like letter dated July 27 last from said Duke of Bolton to the Treasury Lords. It is the King's pleasure that the following work be done at Kensington: viz. to take down the front wall, roof and floors of the Privy Chamber where necessary and to re-build the same in a plain and substantial manner. Likewise to alter the King's Backstairs with additions to make them more convenient and to remove the King's Stool from the Gallery to a Closet by the Backstairs: also for removing and altering a chimney and doors in the room next the Great Bedchamber as it formerly was; and to re-build the Water Tower. Prefixing: a like letter dated 27 July last from said Duke to the Treasury Lords. It is the King's pleasure that two rooms be fitted up at Kensington for the Pages of the Backstairs, and a deal wainscot partition painted [be] put in a room under Queen Mary's Gallery there and also a deal wainscot partition painted be put in the room that was formerly Monsieur Overquerk's bedchamber; likewise for paving the two little areas on each side the passage near the Clock Tower and for taking up the floor of the King's Gallery and laying it down again. Treasury reference to the Earl of Lincoln [Paymaster General of the Forces] and William Pulteney, Esq. [Secretary at War] of the petition of John Forbes, one of the Deputy Lieutenants of the County of Inverness, shewing that he and several well affected gentlemen garrisoned some of the strongest castles in that county and borrowed of private persons for the service thereof 1,613l. 15s. 0d.; in discharge of which there was only received from the Earl of Sunderland 240l., so that there remains 1,373l. 15s. 0d. “due to him”: therefore praying payment thereof out of the Contingencies of the Army. Same to the Secretary at War of the petition of Edward Hughes, Esq., Judge Advocate General [of the Army], praying an extra allowance of 20s. a day over and above his pay as Judge Advocate, for his extraordinary trouble in attending the meetings of the Board of General Officers [of the Army] and in entering and drawing up all states and directions of matters before them: petitioner's predecessor having had the like allowance.

Aug. 3. William Lowndes to the Customs Commissioners to make up and lay before the Commissioners for Trade an account of the annual net produce of the Four and a Half per cent. Duty in the Leeward Islands since 1702. Out Letters (General) XXII, p. 96.
Treasury warrant to same to pay Charles Tregea, officer of the Customs at St. Agnes in Padstow port, 40l. as reward for seizing in Sept. last at St. Agnes a ship and cargo (viz. the Elizabeth of Ilfracombe laden with brandy which was run and seized on shore), which ship was forcibly carried away and himself very much abused and wounded by Joseph Donithorne and a mob of tinners, and the said Donithorne was convicted for it at the last Assizes held for Co. Cornwall and fined 200l., which has since been paid to Mr. Harcourt, Master of the Crown Office.

Aug. 7. Treasury subscription for the execution of a warrant dated July 11 from the Duke of Bolton, Lord Chamberlain of the Household, to the Honble. James Brudnall, Esq., Master of the Jewel Office, for the delivery to the Duke of Kent, Lord Steward of the Household, of 1,000 ounces of white plate: to an estimate of 400l. Aug. 8. Royal letters patent revoking and determining the patent of 18 Feb. 1714–15 which granted to Daniel, Earl of Nottingham, an annuity, yearly rent or pension of 3,500l.: during pleasure; it being meant thereby that he should enjoy same for such time only as he should continue to execute the office which he then had of President of the Privy Council and he has accordingly been paid thereon to 28 Feb. 1715–16, “the day we were pleased to resume the said office from him.” King's Warrant Book XXVIII, p. 70.
Money warrant for 2,583l. 11s. 6d. as follows to Robert Lowther, Esq., Captain General and Governor in Chief of Barbados, viz. 180l. 16s.d. for 33 days on his full salary of 2,000l. per an. from 1713–14 March 22 (the day he was last paid) to 24 April 1714, on which day he left the said island on being recalled (as is certified by Alexander Skene, late Secretary to the Council of that island); 402l. 15s.d. for 147 days from 15 Dec. 1714 (the date of the present patent which appoints him to the said Government) to 11 May 1715, when he arrived in the said island: to wit on his half salary for said time; and 2,000l. for one entire year 11 May 1715 to 11 May 1716 on his full salary as above: the King having by a privy seal of 19 May 1716 directed payment to him of said allowance or yearly sum of 2,000l. out of the Four and a Half per cent. Duty, to wit 1,200l. per an. for his support and maintenance and 800l. per an. in lieu of all gifts and presents from the Assemblies of said Island. (Money order dated Aug. 10 hereon.) Followed by: the petition of said Anthony Cracherode shewing that by vote of the House of Commons he was appointed Solicitor to the Committee of Managers of the above Impeachment: that he attended the Committee many times and copied over many informations and other papers for them and made a breviate for the trial of the said late Earl and a fair copy thereof for each of the Managers and afterwards attended the trial several days: that in regard the said prosecution was not by direction of the Treasury or of a Secretary of State he cannot be allowed his disbursements without special order of the Treasury: that in the case of the impeachment of Dr. Sacheverell your petitioner's predecessor was not only allowed all his disbursements but received a reward of 150 guineas for soliciting the prosecution of that impeachment: therefore prays allowance of his disbursements and a reward for his service. Thomas Hughes 100l. as reward for his services at the late fire near the Customs House in Thames Street, where he was instrumental in saving the said Customs House and the warehouses thereunto belonging by adventuring himself into an house next adjoining and blowing it up after it was actually on fire, as is certified by Sir William Humphrys, then Lord Mayor, and Sir Randolph Knipe, then Sheriff of London.
Prefixing: report dated May 15 last by said Commissioners on the petition of said Hughes. He deserves reward for his services as above. But we have already paid to divers other persons the 100l. which was then promised for saving the Customs House and we have also paid 5,736l. 8s.d. to several merchants for goods destroyed at the said fire pursuant to an Act of this Session [Private Act 1 Geo.
