June 26. Henry Kelsall to the Earl of Carnarvon to send to the Treasury Lords copies of all such letters or memorials as you may at any time have laid before the Treasury [in your capacity as late Paymaster General of the Forces Abroad] relating to any of those Troops in the pay of Great Britain that refused to march with the late Duke of Ormonde when he separated from the Allies. (including fees to the Lord Chancellor et al. for allowing the By Laws for Hackney Coachmen: also fees to Mr. Bolton, Register to said Commissioners, for engrossing the clause to be inserted in some Act of Parliament for the coachmen to have a certain [or fixed] interest in their licences). Treasury warrant to John How. Paymaster General of Guards and Garrisons, to pay 150l. to Lieut. Francis Fox for his trouble, fatigue, hazard and suffering, in the service of the Crown upon the reduction of Port Royal in America now called Annapolis.
Prefixing: undated report by [General] Francis Nicholson on the memorial of said Lieut. Francis Fox. He was an Officer under my command at the taking of Port Royal where he behaved himself in all respects like a good officer. As for his being taken by the French and Indians and being carried to Quebec with Capt. Pidgeon I have been fully informed thereof by the said Pidgeon, as likewise of the barbarious usage they met with in their long travels through the wilderness and I think they had very good fortune in not being roasted or at least scalped by them. the unhappy circumstances of his family I believe to be true and he being the only Officer there that hath not as yet been so happy [as] to partake of his Majesty's gracious bounty upon account of that unfortunate accident of being taken by the French and Indians I think it reasonable as a sufficient reward for his service and sufferings that he have 150l. sterling. He being an Officer at present belonging to Placentia his Majesty's bounty to these Officers will be a great encouragement to them and all others in his service in those parts. Money warrant for 400l. to James Stanhope, Chancellor of the Exchequer, for 1717 June 24 quarter on his allowance in lieu of perquisites formerly enjoyed by the Chancellor and relinquished by him: being the like allowance made to several former Chancellors of the Exchequer over and above their fees amounting to 200l. per an. payable at the Exchequer and their robes or vestures out of the Great Wardrobe amounting to about 34l. 13s. 4d. per an. Treasury warrant to Antho[ny] Lechmere and Francis Hawes, Customs Cashiers, to pay 65l. to Mark Frecker for the service of himself and several [Treasury] clerks employed in making up books containing the accounts of the income and issues of the Customs with other the public revenue and taxes between Lady day and Midsummer 1717. William Lowndes to the Customs Commissioners enclosing the petition [missing] of Jacob Janeway, Register of Wool at Canterbury, praying leave to resign to his son William Henry Janeway, in consideration of the said father's long and faithful services in that office. Treasury reference to the Taxes Commissioners of the petition of Robert Harrison, clerk, executor to his father, Sir Robert Harrison, late Receiver General of Taxes for Co. Oxford, praying payment of 632l. 10s. 0d. for Sir Robert's extraordinary charges in returning up the public moneys in 1704–6 and 1711–14. Reference Book IX, p. 332.
Same to same of the petition of William Cobbe, Receiver General of Land Tax anno 1717, shewing that having sent a bond to be executed in the country by his sureties, one of them (Mr. Burgess) refuses to execute the same: therefore praying that in regard the rest [of his sureties] are sufficient [fidelity guarantee] he may have his commission without proposing further security. Mathew, Kt., Barthol[omew] Swartz and Peter Hambly of London, merchants, in behalf of themselves and many other merchants formerly concerned in the late separate trade to the East Indies, ut supra, pp. 240–1, praying that prosecutions against them may be stayed till the Customs Commissioners have reported on their case. Treasury reference to the Customs Commissioners of the petition of Mathew Wright and John Catesby shewing that having about 50 tons of cocoa nuts [they] ordered a servant to pack up a parcel thereof to be shipped on board the Florence frigate which [nuts] happened to be of a different sort to what they so ordered and to what were mentioned in their certificate, whereby they were seized: that the petitioner Katesby, finding this mistake, applied to the Custom House officers but they [the nuts] are still detained: therefore petitioners pray restoration of same, “in consideration of their always fair trading” Reference Book IX, p. 333.
