Treasury warrant to Sir Isaac Newton, Master and Worker of the Mint, to pay 52l. 8s. 3d. to John Mills, one of the High Constables for the Hundred of Ossulstone, Co. Middlesex (Constable of Holborn Division in Co. Middlesex), for his charges in apprehending and prosecuting coyners and utterers of counterfeit coin.
Prefixing: report dated 1717–18 March 13 by Anthony Cracherode, Treasury Solicitor, on the said Mills's petition. The petitioner proceeded by warrant from Secretary the Earl of Sunderland and from Justice Ward.
Appending: bill of Mills's expenses, including payments for sending to West Chester in pursuit of some of those named in the Earl of Sunderland's warrant. The felons mentioned in this bill are King, William Newstead, Williams and Milbanck, Stone's wife, Catherine Macone, William Falkener, Whiteing, Kemberley, son of Hannah Kemberley, now in Newgate for coining, Johnson and his wife and Alexander. William Lantrowe to continue as Deputy Comptroller of the Customs in Barnstaple port with 20l. per an. allowance. Prefixing: report by the Customs Commissioners to the Treasury Lords on the petition of said Lantrow praying to be so continued, he being appointed by Mr. Arris, the patentee, in the room of Edward Hill, the former Deputy, who was in prison for debt: the report showing that the whole fees [of the said office] did not exceed 15l. per an., so that the principal [Arris] could not allow more than 12l. per an. and that therefore it would be to the service of the Crown if the Deputy Comptroller had an allowance from the Crown: and on Dec. 18 last Thomas Fryer (for some years a Deputy King's waiter in London port) had been proposed as Deputy Comptroller with 12l. from the patentee and 20l. from the King, but on March 11 last the Treasury Lords appointed Robert Birkett thereto, but he was found altogether ignorant of the method of computing the Duties on all goods imported and exported as the duty of the said office required, wherefore “we forbore admitting him to the said employment until your Lordships' pleasure was further known.” (April 18.)

April 3. William Lowndes to the Commissioners of Forfeitures enclosing Mr. Harcourt's memorial [missing]. My Lords think it very reasonable that he should be paid 87l. 10s. 0d. for the services therein mentioned, but that the reward and charges should be paid by you out of the incidents of your commission, as the said services do particularly regard the powers with which you are entrusted.
