"at the instance of your Majesty's father, his Royal Highness the then Duke of Savoy [sic for York], afterwards King of England," to join in a subscription to enlarge the dominions of the Crown of England by conquering at their own charges the coast of Africa and building forts and castles to secure the possession, offering as a consideration to grant their conquests and the sole trade there to them for 1,000 [years], whereupon the petitioners undertook it on those terms and subscribed 110,000l. and borrowed much more, and had letters patent 27 Sept. 1672 for the sole propriety for 1,000 years and under the direction of King Charles and the Duke of York they conquered and purchased ports, havens and countries in Africa, built forts and castles and gained a great trade, flourishing for some time and beginning to be reimbursed by dividends: that in the war [consequent] upon the Revolution they lost (taken by the French) to the value of 400,000l. and at the conclusion of the Peace at Ryswick liberty was given to all persons to have benefit of their [Africa] trade for 13 years, paying them 10 per cent. [on their] exports towards repairing their [petitioners'] buildings: that 4,000l. of their bonds were bought up by Mr. Albert, Receiver General of Co. Worcester, for which they [petitioners] are prosecuted at the Queen's suit for said Albert's debt, which, if the debt be levied, will disable them from concerting measures with their creditors to support their trade: that their estate on the rising of the Parliament comes again into their possession and will soon enable them to pay the Queen's debt: therefore begging five years' patience to satisfy the debt with interest.
