1018. Ludovico Audoeno, Bishop of Cassano, to Cardinal Federigo Borromeo.
Pope Sixtus V. promoted my nephew some months ago to the Prévoté of Cambrai, vacant by my promotion to this bishopric, although it was in dispute at the time. He is now in peaceful possession, and has fully satisfied what the Chapter regulations require. They refuse him the fruits, however, on the plea that he does not reside. Your Eminence knows that the city is in the hands of the French, and is no place for Catholic canons faithful to his Catholic Majesty, who are mostly scattered about Flanders, and therefore my nephew is excused from residence, as I am myself. Be pleased to favour my nephew and myself by saying a word to the pope for a brief so that the canons may not raise difficulties about my nephew, as they have no right to do so, and ought not seeing the many services I have rendered the Chapter both at Cambrai and here. I may add that I require my nephew here for my service and that of my church.
