1564, October–December

1564.
Vat. Lib. Vat.
Lat. 6690.
ff. 359–60.
317. Charles Borromeo, Cardinal [Archbishop of Milan] to Charles Visconte, Envoy of Pope Pius IV to the Catholic King.
“The Cardinal [of Lorraine] has spoken at large with his Holiness touching the negotiation for the marriage of his niece the Queen of Scotland with the Archduke Charles, (fn. 1) repeating again and again that it would greatly conduce to the public weal, there being no other means of re-establishing the Catholic religion in that kingdom, for her subjects would not have her quit it, and if she did so she would forfeit all hope of returning, albeit she is so much beloved that if she made so honourable an alliance, there would be a prospect not only of re-establishing the religion, but also of greatly favouring the Catholics of England, who otherwise would be deprived of all hope of ever witnessing the restoration of the religion in their kingdom.”
31 Oct., 1564. Rome. Italian. Copy.
