PREFACE.

The present volume continues the Edition of the Close Rolls of the reign of Henry III, of which the first volume (1227–1232) was published in 1902. The text has been prepared by several junior assistant keepers under my supervision. The Index has been compiled by Mr. K. H. Ledward. The second roll, which begins on page 165 and consists of letters close attested by the king in Gascony, was printed in 1885 in Rôles Gascons, Vol. I, edited by M. Francisque Michel, for the French Ministry of Public Instruction and Fine Arts.
