Margaret Of Savoy to De Mesa (?).
This courier bears our answer to the ambassador in England's last letters which you forwarded about the French practices in England. I do not believe that the marriage they speak of will take place as long as the king of England has no son. I think they might accomplish the two other objects, Tournai and the new alliance. We are writing to try to break up the negotiations about Tournai, assuring the king of England that if he will give it to us for a reasonable price, we will do business with him. I believe that M. de Chièvres expects to conduct these negotiations so as not to exasperate the king of France. I doubt whether we shall be able to accomplish anything, and I expect that before these letters reach England the French will have succeeded or failed. You will therefore forward them as speedily as possible.
To retain the cardinal and M. Poynings [Sir Edward Poynings] we are sending herewith letters of credit paying their pensions for a year. Make no mention of this in your letters to Chièvres. We are promising Wolsey that if he will arrange the affair of Tournai to Charles' advantage he shall be given a bishopric here.
The king is willing to give the present ambassador in England leave to return by October 1st and send another in his place. There has been talk of Don John della Mica but he may be sent instead to Madame. Few persons can be found, however, more competent for such a mission.
