To Philip, king of France. As the truce between him and king Edward is about to expire, the pope has sent by Fulk, bishop of Paris, to beg him to prolong it. But as John de Carlton D.C.L. canon of Wells, sent to England on a like mission, intimated by letter that he was coming to the pope on the part of that king with power to prolong the truce until the feast of Corpus Christi, the pope prays king Philip to send envoys with like power to treat with the said John, who has written to John de Reppis, that although he has power to prolong the truce, he is also ordered not to consent to its prolongation for other than a year, in order that John, archbishop of Canterbury, earls Henry of Lancaster, and John (sic) of Arundel, and others, about to come to the pope by Michaelmas, unless hindered by the epidemic, may consent to the prolongation. Wherefore the pope begs king Philip to send his envoys at the same time. |
