April 1.
Windsor.
To the sheriff of Wiltshire. Order to expend up to the sum of 20l. in repairing the king's houses in his castle of Old Sarum.
To Nicholas de Cheyny, late sheriff of Somerset and Dorset. Order to pay to the sheriff 50 marks of the debts due to the king of the time when he was sheriff, in order to repair therewith the walls of the king's castle of Shireburn and the houses and bridges of the same castle.
Mandate in pursuance to the sheriff of the said counties.

Windsor.
To Roger le Brabazun. Order to release John Machun, imprisoned for divers trespasses in co. Kent, whereof he was convicted before the late king and committed to prison, there to remain for a certain time according to the statute; in which prison he has been for two years. He is to take a reasonable fine from him for the unexpired term of his imprisonment and for what pertains to the king for the said trespasses.
John Coppyng, Richard Coppyng, and Thomas Preggel, convicted for divers trespasses in the same county, have like letters.
April 1.
Windsor.
To the treasurer and barons of the exchequer at Dublin. Order to deliver to Richard de Bereford the horses, vessels, and robes pertaining to his wardrobe seized into the king's hands because he had not rendered account for the time when he was treasurer of Ireland to the late and the present king, he having found sufficient mainpernors before the treasurer and barons of the exchequer at Westminster to be at the said exchequer on the morrow of the Ascension of our Lord next to come to render account of the time when he was treasurer.

Windsor.
To the sheriff of Leicester. Order superseding execution of the mandate to elect a coroner for that county in place of Thomas de Meynill, who, as the king was given to understand, had put all his lands in that county outside his hands, thereby disqualifying himself for that office. By p.s.
April 4.
Windsor.
To the sheriff of Essex. Order to deliver to Walran de Rocheford seisin of a messuage and seven acres of land in Maneweden that Warin son of William, outlawed for felony, held of the said Walran, as they have been in the hands of the late and the present king for a year and a day. The township of Maneweden had the year and day, and ought to answer for the same.
April 21.
Westminster.
To the sheriff of Norfolk. Order to proceed to Great Yarmouth and there proclaim and prohibit, under grievous forfeiture, anyone from doing wrong to any other whereby the king's peace may be disturbed, the king being prepared to do speedy justice to the parties to the pleas pending in his court at the suit of the men of the said town and of Gorleston concerning wrongs inflicted upon one another, the said men of Great Yarmouth, pending the said pleas, maliciously continuing the wrongs and trespasses, from day to day perpetrate them more grievously than before, as the men of Little Yarmouth and Gorleston have shewn to the king.

To Roger le Brabazun and his associates, justices to hear and determine the complaints against Walter, bishop of Coventry and Lichfield. Order to put into execution, so far as concerns the damages to be levied of the temporalities of the bishopric, the judgments rendered before them, notwithstanding that the temporalities are in the king's hands. To Walter de Gloucester, escheator this side Trent. Order to deliver to Margaret, late the wife of John, lord of Meriet, tenant in chief, the following of his lands, which the king has assigned to her in dower: the hamlet of Lopene, co. Order to assign dower to Joan, late the wife of Richard de Astanby, tenant by knight service of the heir of Matilda de Carryk, tenant in chief, the said heir being under age and in the king's wardship, upon her taking oath not to marry without the king's licence.
April 15.
Windsor.
To the sheriff of Buckingham. Order to cause a verderer for the king's forest of Whitlewode to be elected in place of Malculm de Chastillioun, who is insufficiently qualified.
Mar. 12.
Westminster.
To the treasurer and barons of the exchequer. Order to acquit Edmund de Malo Lacu of the relief they are exacting from him by summons of the exchequer for certain lands that Christopher de Seton held in chief of the late king, the late king having granted to the said Edmund all the lands that the said Christopher held in Seton and Brunne, co. York, which were forfeited to the late king by the said Christopher's rebellion.
April 7.
Windsor.
To the treasurer and barons of the exchequer of Dublin. Order to acquit Richard le Blound, of Arclo, of the issues of a carucate of land in Ratehull near Drummynge for the time when the archbishopric of Armach was void after the death of Nicholas the late archbishop, of the value of 21 marks, the king having pardoned him the same in consideration of his services to the late and the present king; which carucate he had of the gift of the said Nicholas for the term of the said Richard's life, which grant the king confirmed.
April 7.
Windsor.
To John Wogan, justiciary of Ireland, or such as shall supply his place. Order to cause Roger de Smalrys to have again the office of the king's market in Ireland, granted to him during the king's pleasure on August 28 last, the king afterwards, not recollecting the said grant, having granted the same office to Adam de Cretyng, which he would not have done had he remembered the grant to the said Roger. To Roger de Mortuo Mari, justice of Wales. Order to so ordain that all the king's castles in Wales be fortified and well guarded, notwithstanding that in the commission to him of the wardship of all the king's land of Wales it was contained that the king's castle of Kaernervan and all the king's other castles in North Wales, West Wales, and South Wales of which the justices have heretofore had the custody, should be fortified and well guarded at the costs of the said Roger, for which custody he was to receive as much as the previous justices, and that he should survey as often as he thought fit all other castles in those parts of which the custody was committed to others by the king and their munitions, and should fortify them at the king's charge. The king will indemnify him for this, and cause due allowance to be made for what he shall expend.
To Robert de Holand, justice of Chester. Order to cause the castles of Flynt, Rotheland, and Bestone to be fortified and safely guarded, in form aforesaid. (fn. 1)

To Robert de Holand, justice of Chester. Order not to put Blethun ap Meuric in default nor to cause him to lose because he was not present at the taking of the assize of novel disseisin instituted against him by Kenewreik Seys before the said justice concerning a tenement in Helgenwren nor at the suit (loquele) in the king's court of Flynt by writ of right between the said Kenewreik, demandant, and the said Blethun, tenant, concerning 20 acres of land and 20 acres of wood in Thlamurgorn, because the king has warranted him so far as concerns this, the said Blethun being in the king's service by his command on Monday next after the feast of St. Scholastica last past, so that he could not be present at the said assize, etc.
May 20.
Westminster.
To the same, or to such as shall supply his place. Like order not to put Robert de Motresheved in default because he did not attend the suit (loquela) between him as demandant and Richard le Vernun, tenant, of the manors of Merpel and Wybereslee, the said Robert being in the king's service on Tuesday next before the feast of St. Mark last past, so that he could not attend. To Hugh le Despenser, justice of the Forest this side Trent. Order to deliver to the sheriff of Southampton 50 oaks not bearing leaves from the king's forest of La Bere and up to 100 cartloads of underwood to make therewith 200 quarters of charcoal, to be led to the king's castle of Winchester.
Mandate in pursuance to the sheriff of Southampton, to make and deliver the said charcoal to Robert son of Payn, constable of the said castle, for the munition of the same.
To the sheriff of Southampton. Order to repair the gates of the said castle and the houses within the same castle, by the view of two men to be elected by Robert son of Payn, the constable of the same, and by the said sheriff.
April 16.
Windsor.
To John de Godele, treasurer, and John Abel, steward of Margaret, Queen of England. Order to take in the forest of Sa[v]ernak, which is in the said queen's hands, 50 oaks fit for timber, and to repair therewith the houses and walls of the king's castle of Marleberge, which is also in her hands.
To the sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk. Order to cause Andrew de Sakevill to have scutage of the knights' fees held of him at the rate of 40s. for a shield for each of the armies of Scotland that he attended, he being with the late king in his armies of Scotland in the 28th and 31st years of his reign. April 22.
Windsor.
To the sheriff of Essex. Order to cause a coroner to be elected for that county in place of John Huberd, who, being a verderer of the king's forest of Essex, is unable to execute the duties of coroner.
To the sheriff of Oxford. Order to repair the houses, towers, and walls of the king's castle of Oxford, and to take for the same stones and timber in the king's palace (palacio) of Oxford by the view of two men of that town. On the information of W. de Melton.
April 20.
Windsor.
To Roger le Brabanzun. Order to release William le Passur from prison, to which he was committed before the late king for divers trespasses by him committed upon divers men in co. Kent, in which prison he has now been for two years, taking from him a reasonable fine for the unexpired term of imprisonment and from what pertains to the king for the trespasses aforesaid.
The like to the same in favour of:
John de Showell, convicted before W. de Bereford and his fellows in co. Sussex for a trespass in the park of John de Britannia, earl of Richemund, at Bynelham.
John de Co[u]denne and Stephen de Coudenne, convicted as above for a trespass in the park of the said earl at Burghersh.
April 30.
Windsor.
To the treasurer and barons of the exchequer. Order to allow to Isabella de Vescy, keeper of the castle of Baumburgh, in her ferm of the said castle, for the time that she has had the custody of the same, as much as other keepers of the gate of the same have been wont to receive, provided that it be proved that she has paid that sum yearly to Roger de Marberthorp, to whom the late king granted the custody of the gate of the said castle for the term of his life, receiving from her the letters patent of the late king commanding her to pay the said sum to the said Roger and also the said Roger's letters of receipt.
