To John de Shordich and Robert Houel. Order not to intermeddle with the corn or animals granted to Henry de Valoynes, sometime steward of the lands of Thomas, earl of Norfolk, and marshal of England, which the earl granted to him for his good service on 3 February last, in his manor of Doverecourt, from Michaelmas last, until Michaelmas following, as the king has learned that John and Robert have taken the goods and chattels of the earl into the king's hands, by reason of a commission to take them. By letter of the keeper.

To the treasurer and chamberlains. Order to receive from Anthony Bache, 600 marks in coin, and the king's letters obligatory under the coket seal to divers foreign merchants for 400 marks, for a certain loan of goods and merchandise taken out of the realm, made to Anthony, and to cause payment or an assignment for 1,000 marks to be made to Anthony. To the sheriff of Hereford. Order to pay to Matilda, countess of Ulster, 16l. 13s. 4d., in part payment of 150l. which are in arrear to her for Easter term last, of those 300l., which she receives yearly of the king, to wit, 100 marks for her dower in Ireland, and 100l. for the maintenance of Elizabeth, her daughter. The king has ordered Richard de Welles, chamberlain of South Wales, to pay her 57l. 6s. 8d.

To the collectors in the port of Southampton of the custom of wool, hides, and wool-fells, and of the subsidy granted to the king. Repetition of an order to pay 1,000l. to Michael Mynyot, the king's butler [as at page 423 above], which they have not cared to obey, so that the king may not punish them as disobedient, and the king wishes the other part of the seal called coket to remain in their custody under the seal of Peter de Pakenham, Michael's attorney, so that it shall not be opened without his being present until the 1,000l. have been paid, and if they have received anything of the custom and subsidy from the time of the first writ, to deliver it to Michael, or his attorney. To the collectors in co. Huntingdon of the triennial tenth and fifteenth lately granted by the community of the realm. Order to pay to Richard de la Pole, citizen of London, 400l., in part payment of 433l. 6s. 8d., in which the king is bound to him for 100 tuns of Gascon wine bought from him by the king's order, by Michael Mynyot, the king's butler, as appears by the king's letters obligatory to Richard.

To William Trussel, escheator this side Trent. Order to pay to Walter de Weston, clerk of the king's works in the Tower of London, 30l., upon his expenses in repairing the walls of the Tower, and the making springalds, bows, cross-bows (balistarum), and other things necessary for the defence of the Tower, which sum the king ordered to be delivered to Walter by the treasurer and chamberlains, and which is not paid to him as may fully appear by a bill of the treasurer delivered in chancery.

To the treasurer and barons of the exchequer, and to the chamberlains. Order not to pay any fees to the king's ministers by writs of liberate, although these writs are brought to them, nor cause any fees of the ministers to be allowed until they have received other mention by the king's writs, as the king is incurring great expenses for the defence of the realm, and to recover the rights of his crown, and as all ought to assist in this, he has ordained, with the assent of the council, that the yearly fees of all ministers which are received and allowed at the exchequer, and other payments by writs of liberate, shall cease unless some of the ministers are so needy that they cannot manage without this, and that the money shall be converted in the meantime in aid of supporting the said charges.

To the collectors of the custom of wool in the port of London. Order to deliver 200 sacks, and 4 cloves of the king's wool in co. Surrey, collected and delivered to them, to Master Paul de Monte Florum, the king's clerk, or to William Potente, chaplain, his attorney, in part payment of 2,000 sacks which the king granted to him to take to parts beyond, without paying any customs or subsidy thereon, in part satisfaction of divers great sums which he has lent to the king in parts beyond the sea, and to permit him to lade the sacks and cloves by his attorney, in the king's ships, without paying custom or subsidy, and to take them to the said parts. To the taxers and collectors of the triennial tenth and fifteenth in co. Hertford. Order to pay to Dinus Forcetti, Peter Byne, and his fellows, merchants of the society of the Bardi, 500l., in part payment of 1,000l. which William de Monte Acuto, earl of Salisbury, paid for the king's secret affairs in part beyond the sea, and which the merchants promised to pay to the earl for the king. and from the 1st August until Michaelmas, every other week for every day, unless any feast occurs, until the none without food and until evening with food, and the work is worth 3d., and he will do 3 'bonedayes' with a scythe in the autumn without allowance of work at the food of the lord, and he will mow for a day and have allowance of one work, and he will carry in a wagon with sack and horse when the lord wishes, and if he does not come to the house that day, but spends the night out, he shall have food from the lord until he returns, and shall have allowance of one work for a day, and if necessary he shall find a beam, 9 feet long, for the lord's sheep fold and 25 garbs of shoots or rods for covering the same; and he shall make ½ quarter of malt for Christmas for a working day, and he shall thresh a bushel of wheat, winnow and carry it into the granary without the lord's food for a working day, and of rye a third part of a quarter, of mesline a third part of a quarter, of barley or hastyber half a quarter, of drag and oats a quater, of beans or peas a third part of a quarter; and he shall make half a perch of wall, 3 feet thick and 5 feet high, and one work shall be allowed, and he shall dig a perch of flat land 3 feet deep and 5 feet wide, and one work shall be allowed, and he shall carry corn, hay and turf all the year, and if he has a plough he shall plough for 2 days at 2 'lovebons' at Michaelmas, and at one in Lent at the lord's food, and if he has not he shall harrow with his horse if he has one, at the lord's food, but if he has a plough or not, he shall plough in one day 1½ roods of land at the ploughing called le Akirbone, without food, or shall give 3d. for that, and he shall give 4d. at the 1st of August for 'bredselver' and stallage, and 2 cocks at Christmas, and shall have his food called 'lokmete,' and 1d. to ward at the Ascension, and shall give aid, merchet, suit and the like; he also holds 1 acre of area and wood, for which he renders a bushel of salt and renders 6d. yearly; Joan Bal of Ware, and Richard Cote, her parcener hold half a bovate which belonged to Hubert Prat, containing 135/6 perches in the town and 13 acres towards the marsh, and their services are as those of William atte Grene; and Joan holds an acre of area and wood for which she renders a bushel of salt yearly and 6d. yearly; Ralph Cotte and Robert in the Herne, Robert and John, sons of Roger Hosebonde, John son of Roger atte Grene, Agnes Joye, William Dragoun, Roger son of Henry and William Cartere, his parceners, hold half a bovate of land which belonged to Richard Edmund, containing 18½ acres in the town and 13 in the marsh, they render the like services; they hold an acre of area and wood, and render a bushel of salt and 6d. yearly; Amabilia relict of Simon, son of Gilbert, holds half a bovate of land which belonged to Gilbert son of Joceus, containing 15 acres 3 roods in the town and 16 acres towards the marsh and renders like services, and she holds 2 acres of area and wood, for which she renders 2 bushels of salt, and renders 6d. yearly; she and William atte Grene, Joan daughter of Geoffrey Huddissone, John son of Roger Asselyn the elder, her parceners, hold half a bovate of land which belonged to Ralph the reeve, containing 15 acres 1 rood in the town and 14 acres towards the marsh, they render the same services, and an acre of area and wood pertains thereto, and is in the hands of Richard Neel and Geoffrey Alger, for which they render a bushel of salt, and render 6d. yearly; and they hold 3 acres of area and wood, and render 3 bushels of salt and render 3d. yearly; Agnes, relict of Simon, son of Nicholas and Geoffrey Joye, her parcener, hold half a bovate of land which belonged to Simon Joye, containing 12 acres in the town and 17 towards the marsh, and render the same services; and she and Geoffrey Alger hold 3 acres of area and wood, and render 3 bushels of salt and 6d. yearly; John Custance and William atte Grene, William Robyn of Gedeneye, Roger son of Simon Smyth, Richard son of Robert Cot and Agnes Joye, his parceners, hold half a bovate of land, which belonged to Gilbert Custaunce, containing 12 acres 1 rood in the town and 13 acres towards the marsh, and they render the same services, and they hold 1 acre of area and wood, and render a bushel of salt and 6d. yearly; Joceus Gilberdyng and Thomas Neel, Alice Gilberdyng, William Tropynel, William Ywyn, John Bonne and Richard Cote son of John Cote, his parceners, hold half a bovate of land which belonged to Roger Gilberdyng, containing 12 acres 1 rood in the town and 14 acres towards the marsh, and render the same services, and they hold an acre of area and wood and render a bushel and 6d. yearly; John Perman is put here in place of a service of a quarter of 'werklond,' because all the services pertaining thereto can be acquitted with the rent and aid; John Perman holds 13 acres 3 roods 15 perches with 2 messuages and renders 9s. 6½d. 'Monedaylond' Agnes relict of Simon son of Nicholas, holds a quarter which belonged to Simon son of Hawys, containing 6 acres, and she will work every Monday yearly as do the werkmen, but she shall not carry corn, hay or turf, or do labour or mow, but shall thresh, dig, and wall as they do, and shall make 3 'bonedayes' and give 2 cocks at Christmas, and plough or harrow if she has a plough or harrow at 3 'lovebons,' and give ½d. to ward, and shall work from 1st August until Michaelmas on every Monday and Tuesday; and if the 'werkmen' carry corn or hay every day of the week of that time, she shall stack or gather, and have her food, and she shall give aid, 'merchet' and the like. Molmen: Robert Crisp and Katherine Drombyl hold a quarter which belonged to John Ratekyn, containing 6 acres, whereof the heirs of Roger son of Ranulph hold 1 acre 1 rood freely of the lord's gift, and mow for one day with one man, and shall take away hay for one day with one man, and the work of mowing is worth 5d., and that of taking away 1d.; they shall carry corn or hay for one day with their waggon and horse, and the work is worth 3d.; they shall plough or harrow at 3 'lovebons' in the winter season and Lent, if they have plough or harrow, and if they have not a plough or horse, they shall render nothing for this custom, and they shall make half a precaria in autumn, and the work is worth 1½d.; and they shall give ½d. to ward at the Ascension and give aid, 'merchet' and the like, and they render yearly for 4 acres 3 roods 4s. 9d.; here one precaria and 1 cock are laid down because part of the land was made free by the lord's charter, to wit, 1 acre 1 rood; likewise Robert Crisp holds half a bovate which belonged to Hugh atte Boure, containing 8 acres, and he will render the same services, and renders 8s. yearly; Robert Crisp, John and Roger, sons of Geoffrey Crisp, Joan wife of Robert Doddyng, Alan Gregory, Katherine and Alice daughter of Robert, son of Gerard, hold half a bovate, which belonged to John Foulmere, containing 18 acres, for which they will mow with a man for one day, will carry for 2 days, plough or harrow for 3 days as aforesaid, and will make 2 'bonedayes' with scythe in the autumn, and give 3 cocks and 1d. to ward, aid, suit and 'merchet,' and they hold 1½ acres of area and wood, and render 1½ bushels of salt and 18s. yearly; the same John and Roger, son of Geoffrey Crisp, hold 2 acres 1 rood of 'fenlond,' and render 12d. yearly; Alan Gregory holds 1 acre 3 roods of Staraldes and Brithmers and renders 11½d. yearly; Robert Crisp, Isabella Woleward, Hugh son of Joceus, Richard son of Robert Cotte, Alan Gregory, John son of Roger atte Grene, hold half a bovate which was Wolewardes, containing 12 acres, for which they mow for 1 day, will take away hay for one day with one man, and will carry for 2 days with one wagon, plough or harrow for 3 days, etc., and they will reap for 3 days with a scythe, in the autumn, and give two cocks and 1d. to ward, and they hold an acre of area and wood, for which they render a bushel of salt yearly, and give aid, etc. and render 12s. yearly; Richard son of Robert Gotte holds a plot which belonged to Walter Onhandeclerk and Pongrig, and he gives for Pongrig 2 cocks and 3 bonedayes, and renders 3s. 6d. yearly; Robert Crisp, Richard son of Henry, John his brother, John son of Roger, Agnes daughter of John, son of Wydo, John and Roger sons of Geoffrey Crisp, the wife of Simon Derman son of Roger Husbonde, Richard Wylom, Simon son of Margaret Puddyng, John de Fendyk and Elena Gunne hold half a bovate of Hugh son of Simon, containing 20½ acres, for which they will mow for a day with one man, will levy hay for one day with one man, will carry for 2 days with one wagon, will plough or harrow, etc. and will reap for 3 days and give 2 cocks and 1d. to ward, and it was customary to render a bushel of salt for an acre of area and wood which is now in the lord's hands, and they render 20s. 6d. yearly; John son of Henry holds 2 acres 1 rood of 'mollond' of Brithmers, and renders 2s. 3d. yearly, and he and his parceners give 1d. yearly to ward for the land of Brithmerus atte Fendyk's; John son of Roger son of Gilbert, William Mowere and his son hold 15½ acres, and render 13s. 7d. yearly; John atte Fendyk holds 'Veisispingel' and 11 acres 3 roods of 'molend,' and he reaps for Collis for 3 days in August, as above, and he will give 2 cocks as above, and there were wont to pertain to the land.

Nicholas de Crek holds 8 acres of Chaneys, Gonildes and other lands, and renders 5s. 10½d. yearly; Joan Balderware holds 3 acres of land of Chaneys, and renders 3s. a year, and she and Nicholas reap for Chaneys for 3 days and will give 2 cocks and ½d. to ward; Robert son of Simon son of Nicholas, William and Thomas his brothers, hold 3 acres and render 2s. yearly; Juetta Batour holds 2½ acres 1 rood, and renders 21d. yearly; William atte Grene and the heirs of Joceus Neel hold 2 quarters of Grunes and Lenes, containing 6 acres, for which they will mow with one man for 2 days, and will take away hay with one man for 2 days, will load corn or hay for 4 days and make 6 'bonedays' in the autumn, and they give 5 cocks and will plough or harrow, etc., and they give ½d. to ward, and render 6s. yearly; William atte Grene holds 2 acres of 'mollelond' in Lutelmerch and renders 2s. yearly; John Mansel holds 5 acres of land of Staraldes with a cottage, and renders 3s. 4d. yearly; Amabilla, late the wife of Simon son of Gilbert, holds 12 acres of land for which he reaps for 3 days in autumn for ½ acre of that land opposite the messuage of Simon de Grek, and will give 2 cocks and renders 8s. 3d. yearly; Robert Crisp, the heir of Joceus Neel, Hogelina Cotte daughter of John son of Hugh Clerk, hold Billesquarter, containing 8 acres and render 8s. yearly and ½d. to ward; they hold 1 acre of area and wood, for which they render a bushel of salt;
