November 1338

Nov. 28.
Byfleet.
To R. bishop of London. Order to direct the collectors of the triennal tenth granted by the clergy and of wool in that diocese to supersede the demand made on the abbot of Waltham Holy Cross and the other clergy of that diocese for paying wool for the king's use, as although the abbot was not at the parliaments at Westminster or Northampton, and writs thereupon were not directed to him in due time, so that he is not bound to pay the wool there granted, and he is ready to pay the tenth granted in the convocation of the clergy of the province of Canterbury on the morrow of St. Jerome last, and the tenth of the second year of the triennial tenth granted by the clergy, yet the collectors endeavour to compel him to pay wool, as the abbot has informed the king; and the king has compassion on the abbot because his estate is so depressed that the goods and chattels of the abbey hardly suffice for the maintenance of the prior and convent, without other charges. By C.
The like to H. bishop of Lincoln or his vicar general in his absence for the following, to wit:—

H. bishop of Lincoln, or his vicar general in his absence.
The bishop of Salisbury.
The bishop of Winchester.
