To the treasurer and the barons of the exchequer. Writ of

taken, in respect of the execution of the king's writ ordering the
sheriff of Hereford to distrain the bishop of Hereford by all his lands
and chattels in that bailiwick, so that until further order neither
he nor by him any other should lay a hand thereon, to answer
for the issues of those lands, and to have the bishop's body before
the treasurer etc. at Westminster in the octaves of St. Martin
to certify the names of the collectors whom he has appointed in
the deanery and archdeaconry of Hereford of the moiety of a tenth
last granted by the clergy of the province of Canterbury, and order
to release any such distress made; as the abbey of Redynge is of the
foundation of former kings and of the king's patronage, so that the
monks are bound to special celebrations and prayers for the souls
of such kings, who gave (among other lands) the manor of Leomynstre
to them and their successors for sustenance of the abbot and convent;
and now the abbot and convent have shewn the king that, although
certain monks their fellows are from time to time deputed to dwell
in that manor for such celebrations and prayers there, and are day
by day removable at will of the abbot, as may appear by a composition
made between the then bishop and chapter of Hereford and the then
abbot and convent, confirmed by pope Honorius III, and are
accountable to the abbot and convent for the issues of the manor,
the bishop is newly striving to charge them, under name of the prior,
warden and subdean of Leomynstre, with the collection of the said
moiety, wherefore the king commanded the bishop to appoint
trustworthy men of the clergy of that diocese to collect the said
moiety, certifying the treasurer and the barons of their names before
Michaelmas last; but hitherto he has taken no heed to certify such
names in the said deanery and archdeaconry. By C. |
