EDITORIAL NOTE
The part of this volume that is concerned with the history of sport in Cambridgeshire was planned before the Second World War by the late Dr. L. F. Salzman when Editor of the History. It was to some extent written under his editorship, but the lapse of time made it necessary to rewrite all the articles on sport except that on rowing, which has been substantially revised. The remainder of what is now published takes the usual form of a topographical volume in the series. The General Introduction to the History (1970) outlines the structure and aims of the series as a whole.
The volume has been written almost entirely, and has been edited, by the staff of the Editor of the History, who gratefully acknowledges the help that various people and institutions have given. Those whose help was with particular parts are mentioned in the appropriate places, but it is necessary to mention here the Librarian, Mr. E. B. Ceadel, and the staff of the University Library, Cambridge; the archivist, Mr. J. M. P. Farrar, and the staff of the Cambridgeshire Record Office; the Ely Diocesan Archivist, Mrs. A. E. B. Owen; the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (England), which before the publication of its volume on West Cambridgeshire provided information for the Victoria History; and, among college librarians and bursars who gave access to college records, those of Christ's, Corpus Christi, Gonville and Caius, Jesus, King's, Pembroke, St. Catharine's, St. John's, and Trinity Colleges, Cambridge, and Merton College, Oxford.
