EDITORIAL NOTE
This is the fourth volume to be produced as a result of the partnership between the Somerset County Council and the University of London Institute of Historical Research. That partnership is described in the Editorial Note to Volume III, which was published in 1974. The County Council's responsibility for the Victoria History of Somerset has, during the compilation of the present volume, been borne by the Libraries, Museums and Records Committee (until 1978 the Libraries and Museums Sub-Committee of the Education and Cultural Services Committee) under the successive chairmanship of Mrs. D. S. Prettejohn (until 1985), Dr. A. W. G. Court (1985-7), Mr. M. W. Drower (1987-9), Lady Gass (1989), and Mr. A. W. Cotton (from 1989). The University here records its most sincere thanks for the generosity with which the County Council has met and continues to meet the expense of compiling the History.
Many people have given valuable help in the preparation of this volume. Those who were concerned with particular parishes are named in the footnotes to those parishes; they are thanked most warmly. For more extensive help particular thanks are rendered to Mr. J. S. Cox, Mr. and Mrs. M. F. Hill, Mr. J. F. Lawrence, Mr. P. Nokes, and Miss Eileen Palmer. The General Introduction to the Victoria County History, published in 1970, and its Supplement published in 1990 give an outline of the structure and aims of the series as a whole, with an account of its origins and progress.
