LISTS OF OFFICERS TO 1835

There is no known list of keepers or governors before 1573. Existing lists, both manuscript (fn. 1) and printed, (fn. 2) of governors, later aldermen, from 1573, and of mayors, recorders, town or common clerks, and chamber or corporation clerks, are incomplete or inaccurate. Abbreviations used below are: app., appointed; d., died; dis., displaced; off., office; reapp., reappointed; res., resigned.

Keepers or Governors until 1573

The sparsity of surviving records makes it impossible to compile a complete list. (fn. 3) Governors were elected for one year and their eligibility for re-election was controlled by rules which were changed more than once in the 15th century. (fn. 4) In the following list those who were reelected are named only once, the dates of their later terms being in brackets after their names. The 12 men in office in 1573 were replaced by the charter of that year.

They are followed by the date of death, replacement being dead, resignation, or displacement. (fn. 5) The first 12 were those named in the charter of 1573. A systematic search for dates of death has not been made.
