Provision by the executors of John de Button the elder, provost in the church of Wells, for a yearly payment of 25 marks by the prior and canons of Berliz and the archdeacon of Wells on the anniversary of the said John (pridie non. Sept.); two marks thereof to be distributed by the communar among the canons and clerks of Wells then present; two marks to buy bread for the poor; sixteen marks to four chaplains, singing for the souls of the said John, William his brother, and William his nephew [both] late bishops of Bath and Wells, to be appointed at Michaelmas every year, and to sing daily at the altar of St. Nicholas set up of the goods of the said John in the chapel of our Lady by the cloister, but to be removed for neglect or misconduct; two marks for maintaining two wax candles, one to burn in the lantern before the cross erected of the goods of the said John deceased, the other before the altar of the Virgin; 20s. to five choristers to sing an antiphon in honour of the Virgin before her image in the nave; 2s. to the communar for his labour; 2s. to the sacrist for lighting the candles and sounding the gong; the residue 16s. to be applied to lighting and adorning the altar of St. Nicholas as required. One of the chaplains to be appointed principal, to be responsible for the service, receive and distribute the money, making deduction for default; half such deductions to go to the use of the said altar and chapel, half to be retained for his own use.

Grant by Robert de Bolevill, by consent of Beatrice his wife, at the request of Robert bishop of Bath, of his church of Lideford, after the death of William the priest, for a prebend of the church of Wells, saving the vicarage granted, by assent of the said bishop, to Vivian his clerk. lxiii. Fine levied in the king's court at Oxeneford on Friday after the octave of St. Peter and St. Paul 33 Henry II., before Randolf de Glanvill the justice, Hubert Walter dean of York, Ralph son of Stephen, William Ruffus, Robert de Inglesham archdeacon of Gloucester, William son of Stephen sheriff of Gloucester, Robert Marmium, Ralph de Arden, Ralph Murdae, and Henry de Cornhull, between Reginald bishop of Bath and John de Bonevill concerning the advowson of the church of Ledeford. The said John grants that the said church may remain for ever a prebend of the church of Wells, provided that the said John and his heirs shall present a fit clerk to the prebend, whom the said bishop and his successors shall thereupon institute a canon, but such canon shall have no commons in the church of Wells save by grace of the bishop and chapter.

lxvi. Grant by R. 'minister of the church of Bath' to Vivian clerk of Robert de Bolevill of the vicarage of Lideford, at the request of teh said Robert, reciting the grant made by the said Robert, with consent of Beatrice his wife, of his church of Lideford, after the death of William the priest, for a prebend of Wells, saving the said vicarage. lxvii. Charter of Savaricus bishop of Bath and Glastonbury confirming to the canons of Wells the church of Piltun to increase their common fund, as soon as Roger archdeacon of Winchester shall have vacated the same. Two priests to be maintained there for ever, to perform service daily, and to have for stipend 2½ marks a year each, and bread as the vicars of [Wells] have: 100 poor persons to be refreshed in the said church on the obit of the said bishop, and those present at his funeral to have, canons 4d., vicars 2d. each, all at the expense of the said common fund. Ixxvii. Confirmation by King H[enry II] of a gift made by Robert abbot of Glastonbury, with the assent of his convent, to the church of St. Andrew Wells of his church of Piltun, to establish two prebends in the church of Wells, one of 10 marks the other of the residue: the abbot to pay 10 marks yearly to the canon to whom the bishop shall assign the same prebend, 3 marks to his own vicar serving for him in the church of Wells, the remainder the abbot and his successors shall retain in name of a prebend of Wells, but in case of a vacancy one moiety of this portion shall go to the chapter of Wells, the other to the convent. Also of an ordinance made by Reginald bishop of Bath, with the assent of the chapter of Wells, and convent of Bath, concerning ten churches, namely St. John's in Glastonbury, Mera, Stret, Budekeleg', Siapewica, Sowi, Miriling', Pilton, Pennard, and Dichesieta, that Robert abbot of Glastonbury and his successors be archdeacons thereof for ever, and answer to the bishop of Bath, except for the Easter custom for seven churches, reserving jurisdiction to the abbot in ecclesiastical causes, and in case of vacancy the archdeaconry to be in the custody of the prior and convent of Glastonbury; and whereas Thomas archdeacon of Wells quit-claimed seven of those churches alleged to belong to his archdeaconry, granted three which undoubtedly belonged thereto, to stay all differences between the churches of Wells and Glastonbury, the abbot, by assent of his convent, has assigned to the said archdeacon the church of Suthbrente for a prebend of Wells, so that the archdeacon and his successors may be canons thereof. Ixxxi. Writing of Robert 'minister of the church of Bath,' addresed to T. archbishop of Canterbury, etc., reciting that Hywis in Brentemarsh, a portion of land commonly called a hide, member of his manor of Banewell, has been transfered to the possession of several clerks and laymen, namely to Master Walter de Moretania when the said Robert became bishop, after him to Master Alverd, then to Master Richard de Monte acuto, without certain title, and lest it should come into lay hands, constituting the same a perpetual prebend of the church of St. Andrew Wells, with the liberties of other prebends. Grant by Helias the chaplain canon of Wells to the chapter of his manse in Wells, between the manse late of Adam the succentor and that late of Walter Mauger called Muntoria, subject to a yearly rent of 12d. to Walter de Wika and his heirs, and of 2d. at Michaelmas to John de Kardunvill' and Mirabel his sister and their heirs for the dovecote and strip of land (curta terra), to be delivered to farm to a canon resident for ever in succession, at a yearly cess of one mark on the grantor's anniversary, to be divided among the canons and vicars present: but if by the custom of the realm the chapter may not hold the said manse, then the chapter, to which grantor commits his functions, shall in his right appoint a canon resident, as above. Of the relation of certain villeins of the bishop of Bath and Wells of his homage of Lidiard the [bishop's] steward and bailiff [were given to understand] that, whereas the dean and chapter of St. Andrew Wells, by reason of their parsonage of Lidiard Episcopi, ought to have [and used to have pasture] for eight oxen in the pastures of the said bishop in his manor of Lidiard wherein the bishop's oxen [happen] to be pasturing, the [said] bishop ought to pasture in a meadow of the dean and chapter of their said parsonage called Fouracre [during the time that the said meadow] was not mown, in the demesne of the dean and chapter. Whereupon the steward [charged] the whole homage to give their verdict, who say that the dean and chapter, by reason of the said parsonage, ought to have [and used to have pasture for eight] oxen pasturing with the bishop's oxen in singular the pastures and meadows of the said bishop within his manor [aforesaid without exception], without that the bishop ought to pasture in any pasture or meadow of the dean and chapter within [the said manor], and thus they have been used to do long time past. Award of Joscelin bishop of Bath in a dispute between Alwred son of Robert de Ponsaud lord of Suthbarwe, Maud his mother who held the said town in dower, and Thomas de Alditheford clerk presented to the same church by the said Alwerd and Maud on the one part, and the dean and chapter of Wells on the other part, touching the patronage of the church there, and the claim of the chapter to have the church to their own use by grant of Alwerd grandfather of the said Alwerd de Ponseud and confirmation of Reinald bishop of Bath, reciting that the chapter were of old time in possession of 2s. of the said church, the grant of Alwred de Ponsoud the grandfather and the confirmation of bishop Reginald, and appointing that the chapter shall present the said Thomas de Alditheford, and have the right of presentation in future; and because the said church is poor, it shall be quit of the jurisdication of the chapter, and of the payment of the said 2s.; and further that the rector and parishioners of Suthbarwe shall attend the chapter of the archdeacon of Wells like the other rectors and parishioners of that archdeaconry, and be subject to that archdeacon, and the church shall answer to that archdeacon touching the cathedraticum and every other right of the archdeacon. Award by William abbot of Kainesham and G. prior of Briuton (in the absence of the prior of Bath, to whom with them the matter was referred by Pope Celestine), addressed to Robert archdeacon of Bath, in a dispute between Roger parson of Staweia and Robert chaplain of Oterhameton, touching the small tithes of Halesheg'; namely that the said Robert having renounced his claim, the said Roger granted the same to him for life, subject to the yearly payment of one wax candle of 4d. at Michaelmas.

Accord between Robert abbot of Align[ey] (Alingn') and the convent on the part, and John chancellor of Wells canon of the prebend of IIton on the other part, touching a house situated in their court (curia) at Herdecote with the site thereof belonging to the said prebend, namely to store his tithes of Herdecote therein: the dean and chancellor and the chapter of Wells remise all right in the house and ground aforesaid, and the abbot and convent grant in almoin to the prebend of the church of Ilton, to the said chancellor and his successors canons thereof, one piece of their land in Herdecote which William Pek formerly hald of them for half an acre of land, surrounded by certain bounds, namely that piece which lies on the north side of the town of Herdecote, in length from north to south and in breadth from the road leading from Herdecote to Ileford bridge to the land of Ralph son of Agnes de Herdecote, in order to build thereon a grange and houses necessary to store his tithes of Herdecote therein, so that the said chancellor and his successors may enclose the same all round, but may not erect any cottage (colarium) or dwelling (mansionem) except the grange and houses necessary as aforesaid, save by licence of the said abbot and convent.
