Memorandum of a grant made by John bishop of Bath and Wells, upon the intervention of friends in a dispute between himself and John de Godelee dean of Wells and the chapter, that the dean and chapter and their successors may exercise by the dean the jurisdiction claimed by them in the church of St. Andrew Wells and in all prebends and prebendal churches thereof in the diocese except Barton, in the churches of Nitherstawey, Caramptone, Westludeford, Winesham, Evecriz, Westbury, Childcomptone, Bromfelde, Lovynton, Bishop's Lydeyard, Northcury, St. Cuthbert Wells and Ceddre and the chapels to the same annexed, and upon the clergy and people there, causes of plaints and appeals excepted. Commission by John bishop of Bath and Wells to Master Richard de Plumbestok and Master John Martell canons of Wells, William de Edingdon (Edingtone) and Robert de Wamberghe his clerks or three of them, to inquire and report touching the liberty and immunity of the dignities of the church of Wells, the names of places and the persons over which the dean of Wells used to exercise jurisdiction, whether the chapel of St. Columban at Ceddre was the king's free chapel when he held that manor, and who used to meddle with it in his predecessors' days, and the value of two old mitres, one pastoral staff, gloves with gilded buttons, and a gold ring. Memorandum of a grant made by J. bishop of Bath and Wells, to terminate a dispute between himself and the precentor and chancellor of Wells, that during his time the precentor and chancellor shall have jurisdiction over the churches of Pulton and Kyngisbury, which are dignities in the church of Wells, and the parishioners, as their predecessors used to have from time immemorial, causes of plaints and appeals excepted. Grant by John de Godelee dean of Wells and the chapter (in consideration of the purchase for the church of St. Andrew by Robert Burnell formerly bishop of Bath and Wells of the churches of Jevelton, Burnham, Staunton Dru and Coleworth (sic) with the intent of appropriating the church of Burnham to the dean and chapter for his obit and towards the maintenance of the fabric; and of the gift by Walter de Haselschagh now bishop, in pursuance of that intent, by consent of the king, of two acres of land with the patronage of Burnham, after conference with the chapter of Bath, and by ordinance of bishop Walter) of 10l. of their common goods yearly to be paid in the cathedral church of Wells by their communar towards a service for the health or souls of King Edward, Queen Margaret, Eleanor late queen, her consort and children, bishops Robert and Walter, their predecessors and successors, the deans, canons etc. by two chaplains: 10 marks thereof to be paid quarterly to such chaplains (who shall not be vicars) towards their maintenance, and they shall daily celebrate two masses and service for the dead at the altars of St. Mary and St. Andrew by the entrance to the choir; 4s. yearly to them towards the maintenance of the light, ornaments, bread and wine for the said altars; 20s. yearly towards the anniversary of bishop Robert of St. Crispin and St. Crispinianus' day to be divided among the canons and vicars present at the service; 10s. to buy bread for the poor on that day; 20s. on the morrow of the Purification (or St. Blaise) to the canons and vicars who shall celebrate a mass with the office salus populi for the health of bishop Walter yearly during his life, and 10s. that day to the poor, and after his death the same sums on the day of his obit; 2s. to the said communar for his labour, and 8d. to the sacrist for sounding the gong. For this service bishop Walter has chosen Sir Robert de Derby and Sir Richard de Marchesleyg' chaplains: in case of removal the dean, or in default the subdean or chief dignitary, shall nominate a substitute, the dean and chapter submitting themselves to the jurisdiction of the bishop for the time being in this matter, and to his visitation. In triplicate: one copy to remain with the bishop, one in the treasury of Wells, the third with the executors and heirs of bishop Robert. Dated in the chapter of Wells, 5 January 1306.

Declaration by the dean and chapter to all rectors and vicars throughout the deanery of Axebrug' that the tenth of their benefices, granted by them for an aid to the new fabric of the church of Wells, and for the translation thither of the body of William de Marchia late bishop of Bath and Wells, to be paid within two years after Michaelmas 1326, shall not be a precedent to their prejudice; and if within the said two years the papal see, or the archbishop by consent of the prelates and clergy, shall lawfully exact other tenths or any greater impost, the said tenth shall be postponed. November the same year, of the appropriation of the church of Overstaweiey by John bishop of Bath and Wells, after conference with both chapters, to the master and brethren of the house of St. Mark Bristol, the patrons, for that they are bound (besides other alms) to feed a hundred poor, and part of their lands near the sea have been submerged by an inundation, to enter upon the death or cession of the now rector, saving to the dean and chapter for the fabric of their church 40s. yearly at Michaelmas in recompense for the sequestration of fruits during vacancies, to the bishop and his successors power of appointing a vicarage, the vicars to be by them collated, and the dues of the bishop and archdeacon; dated Blakeford, x kal. Inspeximus and confirmation by John de Godelee dean of Wells and the chapter, dated 1 July the same year, of an assignment made by Hervey de Stanton canon of Wells and prebendary of Dunden, by assent of bishop John and of the dean and chapter, to John now vicar of the said prebend, of a piece of land, parcel of the garden of the parsonage messuage of the said prebend, 5 perches in length and 4½ perches in breadth (16½ feet the perch), lying by the messuage late of Henry Calebat to the south, and extending upon the high street there on the west side, as divided from the residue thereof by metes and bounds, to hold to the said vicar and his successors at the presentation of the prebendary for the time being for their dwelling, to be built etc. at their charges, for that in past times they had no fixed residence save from time to time in the parsonage houses by permission of the prebendary; dated Wells, 26 June 1327.

Reply of the locum tenens of the dean of Salisbury (who is in distant parts) and the chapter to the above letter, stating that, though some bishops have attempted to visit their chapter, none has ever actually visited the chapter, the dignities, or the corpora dignitatum either in their days or in times past to their knowledge, but excesses of the canons are to be corrected by the chapter at the bishop's monition. Memorandum that 20 August 1327, the brethren meeting in chapter, after ringing the bell, to confer upon a concord concerning the church of Stokgomer between themselves and Master John de Bruton canon of Wells, who craved the same for his farm due to him, as he alleged, by the custom of the church, it was agreed that the said John, in recompense for his costs for the suit, shall take for three years as much as a simple canon for his residence, the daily distributions excepted; the present year to be reckoned the first.

Letter of the dean and chapter of Wells to Master Alan de Conesburg', thanking him for past services, and praying his aid against the machinations of the abbot and convent of Glastonbury, whom they suspect of efforts to obtain divers exemptions and privileges harmful to the liberties of Wells, suggesting that it would be opportune to learn the truth of the pope's secretaries, and to inform them of the facts in order that they may come to the pope's ears; and stating that, having consulted the bishop and obtained his support, they have reason to hope a prebend will be conferred upon the said Alan when there shall be a vacancy, and therefore have for the present deferred writing on his behalf to the court [of Rome]. Letter of the dean and chapter of Wells to Master R. de Wamberg' canon of Wells, stating that they confided their counsels and desires to Master Lawrence de la Warr', believing that he had started as the king's ambassador to the court of Rome, concerning the business of the chapter and the canonisation of William de Marchia formerly bishop of Bath and Wells; but Master John de Bruton, their adversary therein, is about to go to the said court, and they fear his influence against them owing to his position as the king's messenger; and praying him to consult with friends in London about a remedy, and send a reply by Master Richard Back and Master John de Irigg' the bearers, their proctors in the court of Rome, and also to send word soon by Stephen Trippe what has been done in the matter. Copy of their letter to the chancellor enclosed. They have written to Master Thomas de Plumbstock to follow Wamberg's directions, if they find grace in the king's sight. Dated Wells, 4 June 1324.

Letter of the dean and chapter of Wells to their brother Master Robert de Baldok archdeacon of Medelsex and the king's chancellor, stating the claims of bishop William de Marchia to canonisation, praying his influence with the king to address letters to the pope and cardinals who are his friends at the court of Rome in that behalf, and recommending to him the bearer, Master Robert de Wamberg'. Memorandum that on the vigil of St. Martin 1325, at the first hour, after ringing the bell, William de Pencriz canon of Wells was appointed steward of the dean and chapter.

Also it was appointed that the residue of the assessment of his prebend of Ilton should be paid to Master Geoffrey de Eton canon of Wells of the first money arising from vacant prebends; and Roger de Westebyry their escheator was charged with payment.

Also whereas the bishop has conferred a moiety of the proventions of his visitation upon the fabric of the new church, the dean and chapter specially deputed Master Robert de Wamberg' canon to collect the same.

Also whereas the stalls in the choir are ruinous and unsightly, it was ordained that every canon, dignitary and official should make his stall at his own cost, and if necessary by compulsion of the dean.

Also it was appointed by the dean and chapter the morrow of the Circumcision 1325 that every canon should pay for making his stall 30s., half in the quinzaine of the Purification, and half on Michaelmas day next.

June 1326, between the dean and chapter of Wells, to whom the parish church of St. Cuthbert in the city of Wells was appropriated, on the one part, and Master Thomas de Cherleton archdeacon of Wells and perpetual farmer thereof on the other part, whereby Master Thomas grants to the dean and chapter from Michaelmas all the rents and profits during his life, for a yearly rent of 20 marks payable quarterly, and they shall pay the yearly rent of 100 marks due from the farmer for the commons of the vicars, and remit all action against him or his executors for any defect in the said church, the houses, closes etc. thereof, saving to him the fruits etc. up to Michaelmas. Memorandum of an indenture (reciting that John de Godelee dean of Wells and his predecessors always had common of pasture in John de Northelode's wood of Baggelegh for all their cattle at all times of the year, and the said John and his ancestors had similar common in the dean's wood of Baggelegh, and that such common profited them little, and much damage was done for want of enclosure) whereby on Tuesday the feast of St. Simon and St. Jude 3 Edward II at Modeslegh, John de Northlode quitclaimed to the dean and his successors his common in their wood, so that they might enclose the same with dyke and hedge, and hold in severalty, and the dean made a similar quitclaim to the said John.

Ordinance by Thomas de Retforde chancellor of Wells and the chapter, made at a special chapter held on Friday after St. Agatha 1330, reciting the augmentation of their rents, proventions and possessions, and the defence of their liberties by John de Godelee the dean, and a licence in mortmain granted by the king at his procurement to acquire 20 librates of land and rent for finding two priests in the said church to celebrate daily for the souls of King Edward I and Margaret his consort, and for founding a perpetual chantry of two priests to celebrate masses daily for ever, one at the altar built in honour of the body and blood of Christ yet to be dedicated, the other in St. Mary's chapel by the cloister, for the souls of Edward I and Margaret, Elias de Godelee, Joan his wife, Roger le Someter and Lettice his wife, and for the health of John de Godelee the dean, Master John de Brywtone and Hamelin de Godelee canons of Wells during their lives and for their souls—those namely deputed at the first named altar to celebrate on Sundays the mass of Corpus Christi, on Mondays of the Holy Spirit, on Fridays of Holy Cross and on other days the office of the dead, and at the other altar every Sunday mass of the Holy Trinity, every Monday of St. Michael, St. Gabriel, St. Raphael and All Archangels, every Tuesday of St. Thomas, St. Stephen, St. Lawrence and All Martyrs, every Wednesday of St. Peter, St. Paul, St. Andrew, St. John and All Apostles, every Thursday of St. Edmund, St. Nicholas, St. Martin and other confessors, every Friday of St. Katherine, St. Mary Magdalen, St. Margaret and other virgins, every Saturday of the Virgin Mary, (feasts of nine lessons excepted, when there shall be a special celebration in the said chapel to be taken in turn,) and every day with the other chantry priests in the church, after the first peal for matins in the parish church of St. Cuthbert, they shall meet in the said chapel to say matins and the other canonical hours, immediately after which the said mass shall be celebrated, and likewise at the hour of vespers to say vespers, compline etc., the priest last named to be called archipresbiter, the other capellanus Christi, both to wear surplices at all services, the archipresbiter to report in writing to the dean or his official at every visitation the defaults of priests not present at canonical hours; upon any vacancy the dean to collate within fifteen days, or in default the chapter, and upon their default the bishop: the said priests to have yearly for ever of the manors of Northcory and Wynescombe 10 marks for stipend and maintenance, payable quarterly by the communar, and 12s. yearly for finding bread, wine and light, and to divide any surplus equally at the year's end: a mass to be celebrated yearly on ii id. March so long as the said dean live, and an anniversary on the day of his death for ever, and 20s. to be divided among the canons and vicars present, 6d. to be paid to the sacrist for sounding the gong, 4s. 2d. to be divided among poor clerks for saying the psalter, and 30s. in bread among the poor; with bond for performance of the above. Reply of J. de Godelee dean of Wells and the chapter to a petition of Dame Katherine relict of Sir Walter de Northwico knight, Sir John his son, and Dame Margery wife of the said John, granting them a share in all masses, prayers, alms, fasts etc., and that, when their deaths are made known, their names shall be written among those of benefactors in the martyrology of the church of Wells, and masses and prayers ordered for their souls as for deceased brethren and sisters.
