Indenture of accord, dated Sunday after the Epiphany 1 Edward II, between John Godelee dean of Wells and the chapter on the one part and Geoffrey de Molendinis on the other, the said Geoffrey having procured a writ of novel disseisin against the dean and chapter touching common of pasture upon a moor in Wynescumbe called Blakemore; whereby the dean and chapter grant to the said Geoffrey and his heirs in severalty for ever, 2 acres of pasture therein, lying next their pasture on the west side, and a road over the moor 9 feet wide to the said 2 acres in a straight line from the causeway leading towards Wynescumbe. (the said Geoffrey at his own cost making a dike 4 feet wide to enclose such road on the south, 2 feet to be taken from the moor and 2 feet from the road,) also a road 12 feet wide from the arable land of the said Geoffrey called Esturhull to Cockhull by the watercourse running to the said Geoffrey's mill (to be enclosed as above), and that he may drive his cattle from his tenement called Mackesmull over Muleforlanges to the cross road leading to Barton and beyond as far as Himeringdon, with warranty: in consideration whereof the said Geoffrey quitclaims all right of common upon the said moor. Grant by William de la Ford the younger to the dean and chapter of Wells that they may scour and repair an ancient dike 5 feet in width dividing their grove from a small parcel of the said William's land on the south side thereof at Longenacresweye in the manor of Wynescumbe, and plant the same with thorns etc.; it having been found by men of the neighbourhood after viewing the same that the said dike is and always was the true boundary upon the soil of the dean and chapter, and that two oaks which he had cut down were growing upon their soil, wherefore he had paid 10l. for damages, and given up the timber. Witnesses: Ellis de Godelee, John de Barton, Robert atte Nye, Henry le Fry, Master William de Barton. Dated Wells in chapter, Saturday St. Prisca 1325.

Indenture of agreement, made on Monday after the octave of Trinity viii id. June 1306, between John Goodelee dean of Wells and the chapter on the one part and Master Roger Huse, Master Robert de Milverton clerks, Roger de Mideltone, and John de Bamptone laymen (executors of Master Henry Huse late dean of Wells) on the other, whereby the dean and chapter, by assent of Walter bishop of Bath and Wells, lease the manor and church of Wynescumbe to the said executors for 3 years from Michaelmas 1305, as fully as the same were held by Master William Burnell late provost of Wells and farmer of the said manor and church, extraordinary charges to be allowed them, with warranty; in consideration whereof the said executors have given the dean and chapter 200l., and shall give them yearly 10 marks at Michaelmas, maintain ordinary charges, and keep the buildings in repair; this term to be extended a year longer if 50 marks lent by them to the dean and chapter be not repaid to the said executors at Wells by St. Lawrence next, and 40l. the residue of the loan in the said fourth year by four quarterly payments.

Memorandum of agreement, made on Tuesday after the octave of Trinity vii id. June 1306, between John de Goodelee dean of Wells and the chapter on the one part and Master Roger Huse and others (executors of Master Henry Huse late dean of Wells) on the other, whereby the dean and chapter lease to the said executors their manor and church of Wynescumbe for a term of years, as above, with this condition, that if by St. Lawrence the dean and chapter shall give security for payment of 10l. yearly for ever for the soul of the said dean Huse towards an anniversary, obit and distribution, as the said executors shall arrange, and by the same day pay to them 50 marks (delivered as a loan to the dean and chapter with 200l. paid for the said perpetuity), or shall pay the said 200l. together with the said loan, the said executors shall immediately render back the said manor and church and the agreement concerning the same.

Certificate by William de Ralegh treasurer of Exeter to R. bishop of Durham, that he was present in London at the making of an accord by the said bishop between J. bishop of Bath and Thomas Mauduit, Nicholas Avenel, and W. son and heir of the said Nicholas, and remembers that the bishop of Bath expressly mentioned 4 marks to be assigned to a vicar in the church of Wells, besides the portion of 30 marks falling to the canon of Wells who should hold the prebend of Werministre; the said 4 marks, and the assignment of a plot of ground in the parish of Werministre to such canon to receive his fruits thereupon, whereof the bishop of Durham himself made mention, not having been inserted in the said accord.

Award made by the bishop of Durham on Monday before the Assumption, in presence of Master Richard official and vicegerent of the lord [bishop] of Salisbury, Master H. Teissun canon of Salisbury, Master W. de Burgo and Master R. de Ambian' clerks of the bishop of Durham, assigning for a prebend of Wells (to which upon the presentation of J. bishop of Bath Master John de Uffinton was admitted and instituted by R. bishop of Salisbury) the great tithes of Great Corslegh and its appurtenances, to wit the great tithes of Great Corslegh, the tithes of Whiteburn and of Buggelegh, of 3 carucates of land, of Tolnestun, Chepmanneslade under the road, and Little Corslegh, as of the value of 30 marks: the assignment of 4 marks to a vicar to serve the said prebend in the church of Wells being deferred until the bishop be assured whether by the tenor of an ancient compromise in writing between the bishop of Durham, Master W. archdeacon of Berkesire and Master E. de Berham (sic) power was reserved to vary the same, and the assignment of a plot of ground to the said canon for a dwelling until by inquisition a convenient spot be found within the parish of Werministre. Done at Tarent, the day aforesaid in the second year of E. archbishop of Canterbury.

Mandate of J. Sarracenus the pope's subdeacon and chaplain and dean of Wells to the abbots, priors, parsons, vicars and chaplains throughout the diocese of Bath and Wells, dated the Translation of St. Thomas M. 1250, to execute a mandate received from the archdeacon of St. Albans and John de Bolum chaplain of the abbot of St. Albans and official of the said archdeacon, as vicegerents and commissioners of the abbot prior (sic) of St. Albans and dean of London, dated Tuesday before St. John Baptist 1250, addressed to the dean and subdean of Wells and the dean of Exeter, enjoining them to publish in all conventual, cathedral and parish churches throughout the said diocese that, in the vacancy of that see, the ordinary jurisdiction belongs to the archdeacon of Tanton, namely the cognisance of causes in the ecclesiastical court, the correction and visitation of clerks and churches of his archdeaconry, and the institution of clerks, revoking and annulling all attempts of Master Thomas de Bedeford to the prejudice of the said archdeacon, condemning him in 60 marks to be paid to the said archdeacon for costs and interest, and excommunicating him until he has contented the same.

Letter of R. abbot of Glastonbury and the convent to J. bishop of Bath, reminding him that they had long since, at his request, presented Sir R. de Lexinton to the church of Hamme, but the presentation had not taken effect; and signifying their pleasure that the bishop should admit Master Benedict the pope's writer to the said church in accordance with a papal provision.

Accord between J. bishop of Bath on the one part and Sir Thomas Maudut and Sir Nicholas Avenel knights on the other touching the patronage of the church of Werministre, the parties and William son and heir of Sir N. Avenel having submitted to the arbitrament of Richard bishop of Durham under a penalty of 100l., with whom was associated Sir William de Ralegh by their consent; whereby the advowson of Werministre remains for ever to the said knights, saving a portion of 30 marks to be assigned in certain places in the parish of Werministre for a prebend of Wells to a clerk to be collated by the bishop of Bath and his successors and presented to the bishop of Salisbury, and by him instituted and sworn to obedience: ordinary charges to be borne by the clerks presented by the said knights and admitted by the bishop of Salisbury, extraordinary charges partly by the bishop of Bath's clerk and partly by the rector, all that shall accrue by fallows (ex novalibus) chapels or tithes to go to the rector, and no increase to the prebendary, who shall hold the said 30 marks without cure of souls. This accord was accepted and ratified by the bishop of Salisbury then being present, and it was agreed that he and the bishop of Durham shall commission two clerks to value the portions of the said church and despatch their valuation in writing to the bishop of Durham, and he shall set apart such as he may think proper to the amount aforesaid. Declaration by Nicholas bishop of Tusculum and papal legate, at the instance of Josceline bishop of Bath and Glastonbury, that at his monition the said bishop, exercising the office of abbot of Glastonbury in the same manor (sic), caused a certain clerk to be admitted a monk and brother of the abbey, upon his petition to the said legate when present there, and that the prior and convent assented to such admission. Letters patent of King Edward [III] granting to the dean and chapter of Wells that they may take of the executors of Walter de Compton late burgess of Wells, and hold to them and their successors, a burgage and two shops thereto attached in the high street of the town of Wells (held of the bishop of Bath and Wells by service of 3s.), and a burgage in the same street by Jacobeswell (held of the said bishop by 4d. yearly), devised to the dean and chapter by will of the said Walter, subject to a charge of 8s. yearly to the vicars of St. Andrew Wells for an anniversary therein anciently founded, though no licence in mortmain for such devise had been obtained. Writ of ad quod damnum, addressed to John de Bekynton the king's escheator in county Somerset, reciting a petition of the dean and chapter of Wells for licence to take and hold a burgage and two shops to the same attached in the high street of Wells, held of the bishop of Bath and Wells by the service of 3s., and a burgage in the same street by Jacobeswell held of the said bishop by the service of 4d. a year, devised to the dean and chapter subject to the said services, and the former to a charge of 8s. yearly payable to the vicars of St. Andrew Wells for an anniversary anciently founded in that church, the latter to a charge of 4s. yearly to the vicar of St. Cuthbert Wells for a like anniversary in his church, by the will of Walter de Compton late burgess of Wells. Indenture made 1 October 15 Richard II between John Wareyn canon of Wells on the one part and Master Thomas Byngham, Master Ralph Berners, Master Robert Rugg' and Master Robert Sloo canons of Wells on the other, being a gift by the said John Wareyn of a messuage and curtilages at Wells (late of Master Walter de Hull canon of Wells deceased) which he had of the gift and feoffment of William Iwayn of Modeford, situate in Byestwallys street between a messuage and curtilage of the said John on the east 93½ king's feet in width to the high way from the cathedral to the Mounthorrey on the west, and between the highway to Byestwalles street opposite the entry of the court wherein Master John Upton dwells on the south and the court of the abbot of Muchelney wherein Master Thomas Alston dwells on the north, upon condition that they the said Thomas, Ralph, Robert and Robert, seisin therein being had, shall reconvey the same to the said John Wareyn for his life and one month after his death at a yearly rent of one rose.
