earl of Warwyck seisin of the fourth part of two messuages, one
called 'Bromehalestenement' the other Scheynes, and of two
carucates of land, 24 acres of meadow, 16 acres of pasture, 8 acres
of wood, 12 acres of moor and 2d. of rent in Yerdeley held by
John Colletton otherwise Bromehale outlawed for felony, who
was son and heir of Joan the fourth daughter of John Bromehale
deceased; as the king has learned by inquisition, taken by the
sheriff, that the said fourth part was in the late king's hand a year
and a day and is yet in his own hand, that it was held of the said
earl, and that answer was made to the late king by John Wasshebourne late escheator for the year and a day and the waste thereof. |

the fealty of Agnes late the wife of William Pagam, and to give
her livery of the manor of Purye, a messuage, one carucate of
land, 13 acres of meadow, 40 acres of pasture and 20 acres of wood
at la Bere by Southwyke; as it is found by inquisition, before the
escheator taken by command of the late king, that William
Tauke, Sir Robert Monkeston and Thomas Welegh were thereof
seised, that the same were held in chief, that without licence of the
king they made a grant of the premises, by name of all their
lands, rents, services etc. in Purye, Badle Colvyle, Holtmede and
Bere, to the said William Pagam and Agnes for her life, with
remainder to William Pagam and to his heirs, that William Pagam
died seised of that estate, and that the same were taken into the
late king's hands by reason of the said trespass; and for a fine
paid in the hanaper the king has pardoned that trespass. |

Like order, mutatis mutandis, concerning 27l. 15s. 8d. of the fee
farm of that town and of 60 acres of land there; as upon the
petition of the commons with assent of the lords spiritual and
temporal in a parliament holden at Coventre order was made that
all castles, towns, manors, lordships, lands, rents, fee farms and
other possessions held by Queen Anne in dower or for life whereof
gifts or grants were made by King Henry IV or King Richard
should be taken again into the king's hand, any gifts made by the
said King Henry to his children or to others by authority of
parliament excepted, and that the same should, with those
exceptions, be given to the queen in dower, with proviso that
notwithstanding that ordinance Ralph earl of Westmerland, for
good and praiseworthy service by him rendered to King Henry,
should have for his life such of the said castles etc. as were to him
granted by the said king, and should enjoy the same until the
king should make him recompense for them, and that then
they should remain to the queen as aforesaid; and it was found
by inquisition, taken before that king's escheator, that in her life
time Queen Anne had 27l. 15s. 8d. a year of the said fee farm for
life by gift of King Richard, and King Henry IV ordered the said
escheator to give his said queen livery thereof in part of her dower

To the escheator in Notynghamshire. Order in presence of
those concerned, or of their attorneys, to assign dower to Eleanor
who was wife of Richard son and heir of Thomas late lord le
Despenser and cousin (consanguinei) and heir of Elizabeth who was
wife of Edward le Despenser knight and mother of the said
Thomas, and the issues thereof taken since 22 February 2 Henry V;
as on that date the late king, having taken of the said Eleanor
an oath etc., ordered the then escheator in presence etc. (as above)
to assign her dower of all castles, manors, lands, rents, fees,
advowsons, fairs, markets, honours, courts, cantreds, commotes,
royal jurisdictions etc. held by the said Elizabeth of her own
heritage, of those whereof she was jointly enfeoffed with Edward
her husband in fee tail or otherwise in dower of the said Richard's
heritage, and of those which were of the said Richard by virtue of
entails made to his ancestors, and which came to the hands of
King Henry IV by the death of the said Thomas and Elizabeth
and by reason of the nonage of the said Richard, who died within
age in ward of the late king, the lands held by the said Thomas in
fee simple being forfeit to King Henry IV by reason of a judgment
against him rendered in parliament; and that escheator was
removed from office, and the late king died, before his said writ
was executed. |
