To the abbess and convent of Berchyng otherwise Berkyng. Request to admit to their house John Chancy the younger, esquire, the king's serjeant, and to minister to him such maintenance as John Spenser heretofore had therein or any other had or ought to have had at command of the king's forefathers or otherwise by virtue of the king's prerogative, making him letters patent under the common seal of the house with mention of what he shall take, and writing again by the bearer what they will do; as the king is informed that a maintenance for which the king ought to send a person to them, even as his forefathers were used heretofore to do, has been unlawfully concealed from him no small time, and he has sent the said John, willing to make provision for him. Charter with warranty of a garden called 'Auntrous gardyn' in the parish of St. Mary 'de Stronde' sometime of William Auntrous citizen and tailor of London, which, with other lands there and elsewhere in Middlesex, the grantor had by feoffment of John Wilcokkes citizen and tailor of London, situate between a garden of the abbot and convent of Westminster called the 'Covent gardyn' on the north and west, as enclosed by walls of earth, a tenement called the 'Swan' on the west and the high way leading from the town of 'Seynt Gylys' to 'Stronde Crosse' on the east, and extending in length from the north head to a tenement of the dean and chapter of the new college of St. Mary Leycestre wherein William Normanton now dwells, sometime called the 'Flourdlys,' and a tenement of John Shelton on the south, and in a line along a wall of earth now built westward to the 'Swan.'
