Declaration of Robert Fowler of Bray in Berkshire gentilman, that in the weke afore Easter, 13 Henry VI, John Martyn justice delivered to him atte his manoir of Gravene co. Kent a dede sealed with his seal of the manor of Appulderfelde made to Thomas Foxle and Theobaude his wyfe for their lyves, but whether made onely in the name of the said Martyn or joyntlie with other he is not remembred, but as of any former feoffement to John Martyn a fore that Thomas Foxle enfeoffed the cardynall of Wynchestre, Sir Raynold West lord de la Warre and John Martyn joyntlie with other he herde never worde therof duryng the lyfe of Thomas Foxle nor sethen till within this half yere, notwithstondyng he was nyghe kynnesman to Thomas Foxle and in his trust and favour, and dyd him service in his hous many yeres and dayes afore his decesse, therfore he dares say that John Martyn was never enfeoffed of the manoir of Appulderfelde but joyntlie with the cardynall and other; as of any lettres of attorney made by John Martyn to deliver seisyn, or by the said Thomas and Theobaude to resceyve seisyn, which deponent receyved of John Martyn, he is not remembred that were he sawe any; that whaune he had received the dede he rode to Appulderfelde, and is remembred it was nygh nyght or he cam thider, and he redde the dede to John Marchaunt at that tyme there fermour, the whiche John seide how he herde William Uvedale esquier which duelled there fastby sey and swere, that yf he myght wite any man come thider to interrupte his revenez Thomas Uvedale's possession of the said manoir, whiche he had of the yifte of Thomas Foxle by souffraunce of the cardynall and other his feoffees with Elizabeth his doughter in maryage, he shulde sore repente it and he myght take him there, wherfore he yave deponent counsaill to departe on the morowe by tymes, and so he did three hoeures afore day withoute any more langage of the dede; and as for any lyvere of seisyn other wyse thanne rehersed, he never made noane nor knewe any made.
