Memorandum of delivery on 14 February to John Studde as deputy of a writ dated 12 February directing the sheriff of Staffordshire to attach Humphrey Bowghey, Robert Bowghey the younger and the elder, Hugh Bowghey, Richard Rogers, John Pykyn, Thomas Loo, Stephen Cartwright and Robert Crokette to appear before king and Council at Westminster on the quinzaine of Easter next to answer for certain contempts etc.

(i) John Bourghchier knight lord Berners, to Sir William Capell knight, his heirs and assigns. Indenture of sale, in return for the manors of Iklyngham Berners, Berners Rothyng and Berwik Berners sold by John (as above, No. 571) and afterwards recovered against him by John Barfote clerk, John Holden and Edmund Burton and for 200l. (of which he acknowledges receipt), of the reversion of Massyngham Parva manor co. Norfolk with the advowson (if any advowson be in gross or otherwise pertaining to the manor) and Stoneham Aspall manor with the advowson and lands in Stoneham Aspall, Stoneham Parva, Mekylfeld, Wetheryngset, Debynham, Wynston, Pethawe, Gosbak, Codenham and Croford co. Suffolk late of the inheritance of John's mother Elizabeth late countess of Surrey and now held for life by Thomas earl of Surrey by the courtesy of England; covenant that premises are worth 44l. a year; estate to be made within a year of the earl's decease, or earlier if he will assent, premises discharged and evidences delivered; till William is assured in possession he shall be paid 20l. a year by instalments of 10l. on 1 June and 1 December between 9 and 11 a.m. at the altar of St. Thomas the Martyr in the church of St. Thomas Acon in Westchepe; before Easter next, John shall enfeoff William archbishop of Canterbury, chancellor of England, Giles Daubney knight lord Daubney, John Yong clerk, Master of the Rolls, Robert Brudenell judge of the King's Bench, Humphrey Conyngesby serjeant at law, Richard Broke and John Gardyner gentlemen and their heirs in the manors of Hunnesdon and Estwike with the advowson of Estwike, Hunnesdon Park and a water-mill called Wadysmyll and lands in Hunnesdon, Estwyke, Stonedon and Wadesmyll co. Hertford discharged of all charges except dower of his wife lady Katharine (of which he will discharge them before the Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr next), to the intent that if John default in payment of the 20l. or fail to make estate or else decease before possession is assured, they shall be seised to the use of William and his heirs and shall make estate to them accordingly, whereupon John and his heirs will be quit of the 20l.; after estate made of the premises in Norfolk and Suffolk, or refusal by William or his heirs to accept a formal tender of the same, John and his heirs shall be quit of the 20l., and the premises in Hertfordshire shall be held to their use; statute staple of 13 July, 21 Henry VII, whereby John is bound to William in 2,000l. for performance of a previous indenture (No. 571) to be void on performance of the present indenture. Northampton (Noth'), gentleman, his heirs and assigns. Indenture of sale in fee simple for 40 m. (of which she acknowledges receipt) of Streteley manor in Mentmore and Ledbourn' with all her lands there and in Crofton, Northmerston, Whytchurch and elsewhere in Buckinghamshire except those in Newton Longvyle, and also her lands in Stacheden, Asple, Pekesden and Eye in Shytlyngton or elsewhere in Bedfordshire; assurances to be made and evidences delivered before Michaelmas next; Ralph to provide her with meat, drink, clothing and a convenient chamber for life. Northampton with 12 messuages, 4 tofts, 400 (quatuorcentas) a. land, 100 a. meadow, 100 a. pasture and 40s. rent, which Ralph together with John Mulsho esquire, William Lane, Henry Durraunt clerk and Roger Gifford recovered against Nicholas and Elizabeth his wife in Trinity term, 17 Henry VII, to Ralph's use for life in accordance with indentures dated 15 July, 17 Henry VII, and 27 June, 20 Henry VII, and which Ralph quitclaimed to his cofeoffees by indenture of 30 June, 20 Henry VII, and they demised to him for life by indenture of 20 July, 20 Henry VII; release and quitclaim accordingly. Whereas it is found in the Pipe Roll (in Magno Rotulo) of 10 Henry V that 100l. were allowed to the citizens of Lincoln for 100l. paid by them in 8 Henry V to John son and heir of William de Roos knight, son of Beatrice who was the wife of Thomas de Roos of Hamelak knight, of an annual rent of 100l. from the fee farm of the city, which she held by gift of Hugh earl of Stafford and others to Thomas and Beatrice and the heirs of their bodies; and in the Pipe Roll of 9 Henry VI that 33l. 6s. 8d. were allowed for a like payment to Eleanor who was the wife of Thomas de Roos knight as assigned to her in dower on 1 Dec., 9 Henry VI; and in the Pipe Roll of 38 Henry VI that 100 m. parcel of the same were allowed to Thomas de Roos son and heir of Thomas by certificate sent into Chancery by the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer; and whereas the same Thomas by the name of Thomas lord Roos was attainted by act of Parliament, 1 Edward IV [c. 17], and the attainder was annulled by act of 1 Henry VII [c. 39] in favour of Edmund his son and heir, whose possessions were committed by act of 7 Henry VII [c. 13] to Thomas Lovell knight; order to pay to Thomas Lovell the said rent of 100l. yearly for life with arrears from St. John Baptist, 2 Henry VII, receiving his letters of acquittance which shall suffice with this order to ensure their allowance of the same in their account.

[m. 11d.] Indenture between the king and William Conyers knight lord Conyers. Conyers shall be captain of the town of Berwik upon Twede and lieutenant of the castle from 16 Feb. next at the king's pleasure till he receive sufficient discharge under the Privy Seal or Privy Signet or till six months after he shall have sued the king for such discharge; he shall keep them safely against the Scots and all other the king's enemies and rebels, defending them in the event of siege for two months and doing his utmost to keep them thereafter; he shall have continually in his retinue 230 able men arrayed for war, viz. 100 'sperys well horsed and harnesid,' 50 archers on foot, 50 other footmen, 20 gunners, 8 constables and 2 clerks for the watch; he shall receive yearly 100 m. for his own wages, 20 m. for 'esprellys,' 6l. a head for spears, 6l. 13s. 4d. for archers, 5l. 6s. 8d. for footmen, 6d. a day for twelve of the gunners and 6l. 13s. 4d. a year for the other eight, 10l. for four of the constables and 8l. for the other four, 13l. 6s. 8d. for one of the clerks and 10l. for the other; within the castle he shall have continually a constable, a priest, a cook, two porters, 32 soldiers and three watchmen, all at a yearly wage of 10 m., totalling 400 m.; he shall receive these wages as treasurer of Berwyk at Newcastell, by the receiver of revenues assigned for the purpose, on 16 Aug. and 16 Feb. or within 40 days of either date and pay them within 15 days thereafter; he shall 'stuffe and vitaille' the castle at his proper costs for at least eight months over and above the common provision for his house within the castle. The marshal of the town shall have attending upon him 24 persons of the said retinue, twelve at 6l. 13s. 4d. and twelve at 6l.; the treasurer shall have 16 persons, twelve at 8 m. and four at 10 m.; the master of the ordinance shall have the said 20 gunners; the porter of the town shall have 20 persons, fourteen at 8 m. and six at 10 m. Conyers shall have power to dismiss and admit any of the retinue except the marshall, porter and master of the ordinance. He shall enjoy 'all maner preemynences, fees, privileges and custumes, pastures, medowes, fisshynges, comons' etc. in the town and in Northumberland in as large wise as Sir William Tyler or lord Darcy in their time. In the event of invasion or siege he shall furnish and garnish the town and castle with an additional 400 able soldiers, 200 to be therein before the invasion or siege and 200 within 14 days thereafter, for which he shall receive due recompense, provided ('forseing') that he do his 'true and diligent devour.'
Before 16 Feb. next the king shall send to Berwyk 25 able persons defensibly arrayed, whereof five shall be free masons and the rest rough masons, to take the place of 25 soldiers of the ordinary number, i.e. the five at 10 m. and the rest at 9 m.; Conyers shall provide 25 other able persons defensibly arrayed, to be in the number of the other 25 soldiers of the ordinary retinue at the wages of 9 m., who shall receive 8 m. each, the balance of 25 m. in all being paid to the 25 masons over and above the said wages, i.e. 13s. 4d. a year each, the same 25 persons to be labourers and carriers and servitors to the masons; and masons and labourers shall be kept continually in occupation for the repair and building of the town and castle in such form as the king shall from time to time command by letters under his signet under the oversight and control of the marshal, one constable and one clerk, provided that when the 40 m. received yearly by Conyers for repairs is fully expended on 'stuffe' and carriage the king shall provide any additional amounts that may be necessary, and also that in time of war the masons and labourers may be replaced by other able men. Conyers shall do his best to cause the inhabitants of Berwyk and the marches to 'diche, quyk set, enclose and dyvyde into clausures the boundes of Berwyk' and shall 'approwe' the said bounds as well as the king's lands and tenements within the town and marches. Whereas Gerrard and Camby recovered Oldecastell manor on condition that they should hold it to the use of Younge and Hopton if the two latter paid them 250l. (125l. on 2 Jan. next and 125l. on 22 June following) but otherwise to their own use; and whereas by indenture dated 4 Dec., 22 Henry VII, it was agreed that Younge should make the former payment and Hopton should make the latter or else in case of default should grant the manors, towns and hamlets of Anderton and Leftwich to Younge; it is now agreed that in case of such default these manors etc. shall be granted to Dudley. In return Dudley will pay Younge 426l. 13s. 4d., viz. 400 m. to the king in discharge of bonds, 125l. to cover the payment due on 2 Jan. and the remaining 35l. direct, plus annuities of 23l. 10s. in London for life and thereafter of 11l. 15s. to 'Andrewe' his wife if she survive him, the said annuities to be increased by 20l. and 10l. respectively if Elizabeth Stanley wife of Sir Edward Stanley die during Younge's life; if Dudley die during the life of John and Andrewe Younge, he (sic) and his heirs in case of default on the annuities shall suffer them to recover the arrears out of the issues of Bykley. Indenture between the king and Richard Kydermyster abbot and the convent of St. Mary and St. Kenelm of Wynchecombe co. Gloucester. Whereas the king has granted them by patent (fn. 8) the manor and park of Sudeley with lands etc., they covenant to keep therein continually at least 300 deer, both bucks and does, for him and his successors to hunt at their pleasure; also that the woods now growing there shall be viewed and valued by persons to be named by both parties, except as much as is sufficient for the paling of the park, and the abbot and convent shall have it for their own use on payment of the agreed value or, failing this, it shall be sold at the king's pleasure, provided that it is felled before Easter 1511.
