1316. Id. Dec. Avignon. (f. 29d.)	To the bishop of Norwich. Order to enjoin penance and satisfaction on John de Walsam, canon of St. Mary's, Biston (Beeston), an Augustinian house of the said diocese, who inflicted wounds on his prelate with a sword, from which he having now recovered, the pope has given the canon absolution.
1317. 12 Kal. Feb. Avignon. (f. 31.)	To the archbishop of Canterbury. Mandate to hear and decide the cause touching the prior provincial and Friars Preachers in England, who have been ejected by the bishop and chapter of Hereford from the site given to them by William de Cantalupe, citizen of Hereford, at the request of the bailiff and citizens, the grant having been confirmed by king Henry. On William's death, their ejection and the destruction of what they had built was brought was brought before the king, who ordered the sheriff to examine the matter. The prior and brethern had recourse to Alexander IV. when it appeared that letters had been obtained from Innocent III. disallowing the building of the said church, but these were superseded by the permission of Alexander, and the bishop and chapter of Hereford were ordered to desist from their opposition, the mandate to this effect being addressed to the bishop of Worcester. Appeal was thereupon made to the pope, and litigation went on for a long time, until the prior and brethern obtained letters from Clement IV. to the legate Ottobon, cardinal of St. Adrian's, ordering the suit to be decided, which nevertheless still remains as it was.

To Walter de Pebemers, who gave money to John de cambre then vicar of Monks Colum, in the diocese of London, to enable him to set out for the Holy Land, and on his resigning the vicarage, succeeded him in it. Declaration that by such payment he shall not be held to have incurred the guilt of simony.
1317. 5 Kal. April. Avignon. (f. 84.)	To the bishops of Winchester and Exeter. Mandate to collect the Holy Land tenth in England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales, and to enforce payment of it at two given times. John, bishop of Norwich, John, bishop of Ely, Aymer de Valentia, earl of Pembroke, Bartholomew de Badelesmer, knight, and other envoys of king Edward, have informed the pope that the said king wishes to follow in his father's footsteps, and come to the rescue of the Holy Land. The tenth granted by Clement V. in the council of Vienne for six years has been collected in England, Wales, and Ireland for only one year, and by the present pope was suspended for three years, the collectors being now ordered to collect it for one year from next Michaelmas.

Commission and mandate to warn Robert de Brus and his abettors to desist from invading and occupying land in England, Wales, and Ireland. The said Robert, earl of Carrick, having in the time of king Edward's father made war against him, violating every part, depopulating territory, and destroying castles, ecclesiastical censures are to be issued, and all combinations and confederations made in favour of the said Robert are to be dissolved.

Mandate to warn Friars Preachers and other mendicant religious, and rectors, vicars, and chaplains of parish churches in Ireland to desist from stirring up the people of that country to resist the king's authority; those who disobey this monition. are to be excommunicated. Full powers are given to the said archbishops and dean to do whatever they shall see fit in pursuance of this mandate. [Theiner, 194.]

Dispensation to accept the rectory of St. Mary's, Waynflete, the value to gether of these benefices being 63l. he having to preach on Sundays and feasts, and not having where withal to support the dignity of the chancellorship.

Confirmation, with exemplification, of the ratification by Henry, prior, and the chapter of Canterbury, dated 1 Jan. 1316[–7], of the confirmation by archbishop Walter, dated Lambith, 16 Dec. 1316, of the acceptance by Henry de Langele, prior of Holy Trinity, and the chapter of Norwich, dated Norwich, Non. Oct, 1316, of the ordinance made by John, bishop of Norwich, dated Northelinham, 4 Non. Oct. 1316, touching the chapel of St. John the Evangelist, in the west part of the cathedral founded by him, to be served by four priests to pray for his soul and that of his parents, Solomon and Amice, and for the souls of his predecessors and successors in the see. The church of Westhale is appropriated to the said chapel, and the vicar's portion is to consist of the oblations, mortuary fees, and small tithes of the said church, those, namely, of wool, milk, lambs, calves, pigs, geese, fowls, eggs, doves, bees, fisheries, turbaries, mills, woods and copses, flax, hemp, garden and orchard fruit, and other customary tithes and glebe, except the piece called ‘Schepecotelond,’ on the west of the church, across the public road, containing above three acres, the north side of which abuts on the pasture of the said church, and the other on the land of Thomas Dane of Westhale; this piece of land is given, tithe-free, to the prior and convent as rectors of the said church, with other particulars touching the said church and chapel, and the services to be performed therein, and the allowances to the chaplains, the principal of whom is to have 6 marks a year, and the others 16½ between them.
