Dispensation to remain in the marriage which they have contracted. A contract of marriage was made by Richard de Burgo and Peter, father of the said John, that Richard's daughter Matilda should marry John, she being then six years old. Matilda, the marriage not being consummated, came to the house of William de Mandeville, where John gave her a book, they being then of adult age. Gilbert, earl of Gloucester, wishing to marry one of Richard's daughters, sent envoys, who chose Matilda as the fairest, and he married her. Thereupon John married Avelina. Now his children by her are, notwithstanding his previous contract with Matilda, declared legitimate. |

Richard, the said abbot's predecessor, who contracted the debt, having paid 2000 florins by Master William de Balaeto, papal nuncio, and 2500 by Henry de Goldingham to the papal camera, and 1000 to the college of cardinals, the balance due of 2500 is remitted, and the abbot is to be dispensed touching any irregularity he may have incurred. |

Mandate to make a report to the pope of the process touching the abbot and convent of St. Vincent's, Le Mans, and the priory of St. Mary's, Abergavenny, subject to the said monastery. The prior is appointed by the bishop of Llandaff, acting as diocesan, and John de Astingues of Abergavenny has stated that the house is styled St. Benedict's priory, and is able to support thirteen monks, but that only five reside; that the house, endowed by his ancestors, is now ruined; he therefore petitions that the priory be reformed, and a prior and sufficient number of monks-be placed therein. The bishop is to examine this statement, and is to answer the charge of having, at John's request, removed Fulk the prior without consulting the said abbot and convent, who, on their side, have petitioned the pope. A copy of the said letters is sent to the bishop, and all parties to the cause are to appear before the pope by their proctors. |

To the archbishop of Canterbury. Mandate to ascertain the truth of the question between the priory of Lewes and that of St. Mary's, Pritelwelle. Edmund, de Wodestoke knight, the king's brother, has stated that James de Cusantia, monk of Lewes, by authority of John de Monte Martini, prior of the same, turned out William de Avernas, prior of St. Mary's, Pritelwelle, and took his place. William thereupon appealed to the archbishop, and the prior of Dunmowe, to whom the cause was committed, replaced William; James then appealed to the archbishop, and pending the appeal ejected William and the convent of the said priory. Masters John de Bricton and
Robert de Norton, judges of the archbishop's court, replaced William and the convent; upon which James again appealed, first to the archbishop, and then to the pope. Pending this appeal, William de Columbers and Richard Kentyng, monks of Lewes, by order of the prior, came with an armed force to Pritelwelle, and wounded William in the head while he was celebrating mass at the high altar, and dragged him and three of his monks, also wounded, out of the church, carrying off a box (pixidem) and the common seal, and putting the said prior and monks, bound hand and foot, into a cart, imprisoned them at Lewes. If this statement be found true, the said prior and monks are to be restored to their priory of Pritelwelle. |
