Sept. 11. William Lowndes to Mr. Miller. My Lord Treasurer is acquainted that the keys of two empty houses in the Savoy which belong to the Hospital of the Savoy were put into your hands by the late Surveyor General of Crown Lands. My Lord directs you to deliver them to the bearer, Mrs. Rachel Brigens, widow, and to take a note from her promising the delivery of them over to his Majesty's Surveyor General upon his demand thereof. Sept. 13. Warrant by Treasurer Shrewsbury to William Borret to pay 300l. to George Drummond, Accomptant to the Excise Commissioners in Scotland, for his Majesty's especial service in accordance with the direction of the Lords Justices signified to the Lord Treasurer. Money Book XXIII, p. 248.
Same by same to same to apply 300l. in buying up infected cattle which are to be immediately killed and burned pursuant to the direction of the Lords Justices, that to prevent the spreading of infection among the cattle near Islington all the infected cattle be forthwith bought up, killed and burnt. Letter of direction for 65,022l. 8s. 8d. to James Brydges, late Paymaster of the Forces: out of Contributions on the Lottery anno 1714: and is intended to satisfy the arrears due to the Troops of Hanover for their service in the Low Countries in the year 1712: and is in part of 300,000l. appropriated towards satisfying the debts due on account to the Land Forces and the Outpensioners. Same for 60,095l. 9s. 2d. to same: whereof 30,000l. is to be out of loans to be made by William Chetwynd on credit of the Land Tax anno 1714 or [by] any other person whatsoever; and the remaining 30,095l. 9s. 2d. out of like loans to be made on Malt anno 1702. The said 60,095l. 9s. 2d. is to be taken as part of the above 300,000l. and is intended to be applied to discharge bills of exchange drawn by William Chetwynd, late Envoy at Genoa, for corn sent to Barcelona. William Lowndes to the Postmaster General enclosing a letter [missing] received by my Lord Treasurer from Monsieur Leers desiring a copy of the contract made by [between] you and the Postmaster General of France. Have you any objection thereto? If not, please send a copy thereof to the Treasury to-morrow. Out Letters (General) XXI, p. 267.
Sept. 13. Same to Sir James Bateman et al. My Lord Treasurer directs you to send him a certificate of what money has been received by you on account of the subscriptions [for the sale of] South Sea Stock [held in the name of the public] and that you pay the said moneys into the Exchequer to-morrow morning and take tallies of sol for your discharge. My Lord likewise directs you to transmit hither weekly certificates, to be closed on Saturday in every week, of your further receipts from time to time on the said account until the whole moneys subscribed be fully satisfied and that you pay the said moneys into the Exchequer as aforesaid on Tuesday morning in every week. Same to Mr. Lynn [Samuel Lynn, Muster Master General of the late Marine Regiments]. I have this morning read to my Lord Treasurer your letter relating to the copies of the ships’ books in order to enable you to make up the muster rolls of the late Marine Regiments, the Navy Commissioners being present [at my reading the same to my Lord]. I am to acquaint you that they have assured my Lord that if you employ any hands at the Navy Office to copy such ships’ muster books as are wanting they will give directions for all ready access thereto that can be desired, but they cannot part with the said Books out of the Navy Office. Warrant signed by 20 Lords Justices, dated St. James's, to the Duke of Shrewsbury, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, to pay to the Lords Justices of Ireland (William, Archbishop of Ireland; John, Archbishop of Tuam; Robert, Earl of Kildare) the usual allowance of 100l. each per calendar month from the day of their being sworn to the date of the said Duke's return to Ireland: the same to be abated out of the allowances payable to the said Duke as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland: and further to pay to the said Duke the balance remaining payable over and above the said allowances. Sept. 14 William Lowndes to Mr. Merrill. Send to my Lord Treasurer the names of such persons who have obtained warrants under the late Queen's sign manual, countersigned by the Secretary at War, for payment of pensions out of the Contingencies of the Guards and Garrisons: [to the end] that you may have my Lord Treasurer's direction thereupon. Sept. 15. Same to Mr. How to report on the enclosed petition [missing] to the Lords Justices from the Subaltern Officers of the Third Regiment of Foot Guards who served in Spain; as also a memorial [missing] from same to the Lord Treasurer with an account of the sums they allege to be due to them. Ibid.
Same to Earl Paulet [Poulett, Lord Steward of the Household]. Send my Lord Treasurer an account how far the wages and board wages due to her late Majesty's servants in the Cofferer's Office are satisfied and how much is wanting to clear the same to her demise: and also an account how far the emptions and all other services are paid in that [the Cofferer's] Office and what is wanting to clear them to the same time. (A like letter to Lord Masham [late Cofferer] dated same day.) Ibid., p. 270.
Sept. 15. William Lowndes to the Duke of Buckingham. My Lord Treasurer has suspended the issue of a commission to a Receiver General for Co. Bucks in regard of your recommendation of Mr. Mathias Rogers for that employment. But I am to inform you that it is now absolutely necessary that a Receiver should be forthwith appointed. Same to Sir Lambert Blackwell, Sir Joseph Hodges, Sir Theodore Janssen, Mr. Viceti to send to the Lord Treasurer a weekly account of what money shall be paid to you as Trustees for the subscriptions on the sum of 246,784l. 9s. 6d. in South Sea Stock security for the payment of 180,000l. with interest to the Genoeses: to the end that care may be taken that the interest of such parts thereof as shall from time to time be paid off may cease from thence, and that the overplus may be disposed to the public use as my Lord Treasurer shall direct. Warrant by Treasurer Shrewsbury to the Customs Cashier to pay Charles Godolphin 392l. 17s. 2d. for his salary from Xmas 1713 to 17 May 1714 as a Commissioner of the Customs, he having continued as a Commissioner until that date, when the present Commission bears date. Treasury reference to the Customs Commissioners of the petition of Thomas Chamberlain, collector of Poole port, shewing that the collector of said port in 1694 was [paid] 90l. per an. [salary], but the trade about that time decreasing, the salary of 70l. per an. was then thought sufficient; but by reason of many additional Duties and Impositions he is at extraordinary charge for an additional clerk: that since the peace with France the trade of said port daily increases: therefore prays an addition to his salary towards his increase of charge. Warrant by Treasurer Shrewsbury to the King's Remembrancer to forbear process ad computandum against James Taylour, Receiver General of Taxes on [the staffs of] her late Majesty's Palaces of Whitehall [and St. James's and the verges thereof].
Prefixing: petition by said Taylour shewing that he has cleared all his accounts as far as he can to Lady day 1713 and has paid into the Exchequer all his receipts on the third 2s. Aid anno 1713 [13 Anne, c. 1] and there remains uncollected of the said year's tax the sum of 7,240l. which will be difficult to be collected from the persons upon whom the same is assessed by reason there is half a year's wages and salary due from her late Majesty to clear all the offices payable out of the Civil List to Lady day 1714.

Sept. 16. Money warrant for 1,000l. to Christopher Rhodes to defray the incident charges attending the execution of the 1,400,000l. Lottery anno 1714. (Money order dated Sept. 17 hereon.) Money Book XXIII, p. 249. Order Book VIII, p. 470.
Letter of direction for 9,300l. 12s. 6d. to James Brydges, late Paymaster of the Forces Abroad: out of money remaining in the Exchequer of the Five Sevenths 9 pence per barrel Excise [as by the Act 5–6 Wm. and Mary, c. 20]: and is intended to be applied and paid over for the ordinary pay of the Saxe Gotha Troops from 22 Dec. 1712 to the day of their dismission and one month's pay for their return home according to the Vote of the House of Commons of the 3rd June 1713 [Commons Journals XVII, p. 390]. Letter of direction for 2,206l. 10s. 0d. to Thomas Moor, Paymaster of the Forces Abroad: out of money remaining in the Exchequer of the 25l. per ton on French wines: and is intended to be applied for one month's full pay from Sept. 11 inst. to the Half Pay Officers of the late Regiments of Col. [Robert] Kerr, Earl of Hyndford, Brigadier [Alexander] Grant, Col. [John] Pocock, Col. [Edward] Leigh and Lord Mark Kerr, who are directed forthwith to repair to Scotland pursuant to a warrant of the Lords Justices of the 15th inst. This payment is understood to comprehend the Half Pay which was intended for the said Officers for the same time. Disposition Book XXIII, p. 8.

Mr. Lynn has desired that Mr. Richard Carter, purser of the Torbay, laid up at Chatham, may have four months’ leave to attend the making up the Muster Rolls of the Marine Regiments. My Lord Treasurer desires you to move the Admiralty for leave accordingly. Ibid., p. 274.
Warrant by Treasurer Shrewsbury to the Master and Worker of the Mint to prepare Coronation medals as follows, to wit 300 of gold and 1,200 of silver (being the like number as was provided for the Coronation of Queen Anne) and of the like value with those provided upon the late Peace and to deliver same to the Treasurer of the Household to be by him distributed on the day of the Coronation: all as follows.
Prefixing: order of the Lords Justices in Council dated at the Council Chamber, St. James's, 10 Sept. 1714. The Lords of the Committee appointed to consider the manner of the Coronation this day presented to the Board a report from Sir Isaac Newton, Master of the Mint, with the drafts of medals to be distributed on the day of his Majesty's Coronation; which drafts having been fully considered their Excellencies in Council were pleased to approve of that draft, representing his Majesty's effigies on one side with this inscription:
Georgius D.G. Mag. Brit. Fr. et Hib. Rex
and on the reverse thereof his Majesty in his royal robes seated in a chair with a Britannia setting a Crown upon his head and no other motto than in the exergue,
Inaugaratus Est Oct. MDCCXIV.
and to order, as it is hereby ordered, that the said Master of the Mint do cause forthwith to be made and prepared such number of the said medals as usual: and that particular care be taken that the impression of the said medals do rise high like those medals made upon the late Peace; and to be of such value according to the said draft: which medals are to be distributed at his Majesty's Coronation in such manner as his Majesty shall think fit. Same by same to the Customs Commissioners, Scotland, approving their deputations to the following officers of the Customs in Scotland which were presented to the late Lord Treasurer [Oxford], but for which no warrants were received, being additions to or changes in the new Establishment of the Customs which the said Commissioners sent up [to London] March 4 last and which was approved by Treasurer Oxford March 11 last, to wit changes by death or dismissal or in consequence of the Commission for the management of the Salt Duties, which Commission came to the hands of the said Customs Commissioners on April 9 last, only 11 days before the [said Salt] Duties took place, and therefore necessitated numerous transfers and appointments.
Prefixing: representation to the Lord Treasurer from the said Commissioners of Customs and of Salt Duties in North Britain dated Custom House, Edinburgh, 7 Sept. 1714. The representation recites the facts as above and continues: “Upon the 11th May last we received a warrant from the late Lord High Treasurer constituting Allan Cameron, Esq., [as] Surveyor General of the West and South Coasts of Scotland and Islands thereunto adjoining for hindering the running of uncustomed and prohibited goods and preventing the importation of Irish victual and cattle, in which warrant we were directed to present five riding officers to be under the said Cameron; a list of which officers is hereunto annexed.”
