Footnotes

  • 1. Temp. Roger Germayn, mayor of Chichester (see Chart. Chichester nos. 66, 392, 609).
  • 2. He was a nephew of Pandulph, papal legate in England 1218-1221, bp. of Norwich 1215-26. For a note on the nephew's career, see N. Vincent, 'The election of Pandulph Verracclo as bishop of Norwich (1215)', Historical Research lxviii (1995) 143-63, at pp. 153-4, who shows that the surname 'Masca', given to bp. Pandulph in 1 Fasti II 56, is incorrect.
  • 3. The papal mandate of 5 March 1231 was in response to the bp.'s reply to the papal prov. of Alatrinus, which had been received by the bp. 40 days after he had appointed and installed William de Neville.
  • 4. In Steyning hundred: 'Wystneston', 'Wystaneston' etc.; see PN Suss. I 243.
