PREBEND

Lands in Up Waltham (W. Suss.); earl Roger's manor 1086 (DB I 25d; cf. AS Chs. of Selsey no. 19 note). First reference to preb. 1147 × 57 (Acta no. 28); demesne land in Up Waltham also mentioned 1187 × 97 (ibid. no. 89). Grant to preb. of rights in woods of 'Northcumbe' and 'Depecumbe' and common of pasture 22 May 1249, following suit in county court and king's writ 1248/9 (Chart. Chichester no. 253). Also tenements in Selsey (Inq. Non. p. 366b; Valuation 1535 p. 166; VCH Suss. IV 208). See also VCH Suss. IV 174-5.

Richard de Bohun

His demesne in Waltham mentioned 3 Aug. 1147 × 1157 (Acta no. 28), so presum. already preb. Occ. as canon 6 Oct. 1174 × Dec. 1178 (Acta no. 61) and c. 1177 × c. 26 Apr. 1180, prob. c. Jan. 1179/80 (ibid. no. 58, a ch. prob. connected with ibid. no. 60, dated 15 Jan. 1179/80). Prob. to be identified with Richard de Born, canon, who occ. shortly after 15 Jan. 1179/80 (Chart. Chichester no. 1068; for date cf. Acta no. 60). Occ. as this preb. 1187 × 97 (Acta no. 89).

John de Neville (fn. 1)

First occ. as canon 29 Oct. 1232 (Walcott, Statutes p. 160). Also occ. 1 Apr. 1234 and Apr. 1245 (Chart. Chichester nos. 246, 509). Occ. as this preb. Apr. 1245, when making arrangement for his anniversary (ibid. no. 561). Last occ. 1246/ 7 (ibid. nos. 502, 508, 562). Certainly died by 25 May 1252 (ibid. no. 566; cf. no. 609, attested by Roger Germayn, mayor, who occ. 1251). Prob. related to family of the forester Hugh de Neville, and therefore to bp. Ralph de Neville (see list 1): for the Neville fee of the honour of Arundel in Up Waltham, see W. Farrer, Honors and Knights' Fees III (Manchester, 1925) 47-9.

M. Walter of Gloucester

First occ. as canon 31 Jan. 1244, preb. unident. (list 42). Occ. as this preb. 22 May [1249] (Chart. Chichester no. 253, where Liber Y fo. 113r has '1259' but refers to a writ of 1248-9). Still canon 29 Oct. 1255 (Oxford, Magdalen Coll., Findon ch. p.). Presum. transf. to preb. Westgate on becoming dean, by 10 Aug. 1256 (list 2; cf. below, list 36). Next identified preb. is M. James de Berkeley, who had papal prov. to next vacant preb. 19 March 1317, and left this preb. to become bp. of Exeter 1326 (2 Fasti VII 46).
