Cambridge, as he acknowledged, and as it was found in the book of fees.
The same William gives to the king other 25s. for relief of the said Roger his father, nephew and heir of Joan de Huntyngfeld, of all the lands and tenements which the said Joan held of the king in chief, viz. of the said quarter of a knight’s fee. Afterwards he paid 25s. for his own relief. And for the remaining 25s. he has a day, the morrow of St. Hilary; on which day he paid by a tally of the exchequer.
And in the book of fees of the exchequer, for co. Cambridge, it is found thus:—Roger de Huntyngfeld holds in Bokesworth a quarter of a knight’s fee of the king in chief.
On consideration of the above let a writ be made to the escheator to seize into the king’s hand all the lands of the lord of Huntingfeld, or the king will lose.
Endorsed:—Be it remembered that this information was sent into the chancery by the treasurer &c. for the king, in case any should wish to sue by writ of diem clausit extremum to have the lands &c. which were of William, son and heir of Roger de Huntyngfeld, out of the king’s hand.
Writ of plenius certiorari, whereas by evidences remaining in the chancery it appears that Roger de Huntyngfeld held in Bokesworth a quarter of a knight’s fee of the king in chief, and that William his father whose heir he is, son and heir of Roger de Huntyngfeld sometime deceased, paid relief at the exchequer for the same, and that by a certificate of the treasurer &c. sent into the chancery in the time of King Edward II, it is found in the book of fees under the barony of Picot that Roger de Huntyngfeld held in Bokesworth a quarter of a knight’s fee of the king in chief, and in the book called Domesday it is noted that Picot holds in Bokesworth three hides and a half by the service due for the said manor, the treasurer &c. of the exchequer are commanded to examine the books of Domesday and of fees, and other memoranda of the exchequer, and certify the king in three weeks from St. Michael next, whether the said Roger held the above of the king in chief as of the crown, or otherwise, 26 August, 11 Edward III.
Endorsed, the certificate appears in the schedule annexed.
Schedule. Having examined the books of Domesday and of fees, and other memoranda of the exchequer, upon the contents of the writ returned enclosed, they (the treasurer &c. of the exchequer) find in the book of Domesday under the rubric—Lands of Robert Gernon—as follows:—
In Papesword h[undre]d. In Coutone holds Picot of Robert 1 hide and 1 virgate (extent given).
In Bochesuuorde holds Picot of Robert 2 1/2 hides (extent given).
In Swavesy holds Picot of Robert 1 hide (extent given).
These lands holds Picot the sheriff of Robert Gernon on the marriage of his wife.
In the books of fees in Cambridge, they find:—
Barony of Pycot. Roger de Huntingfeld holds in Bokeswrth a quarter of a knight’s fee of the king in chief.
Many other particulars given of fees held of the king in chief and of other honours in cos. Cambridge and Lincoln. (See Testa de Nevill.)
In extracts from rolls of the chancery, 22 Henry III, delivered at the exchequer, it is found thus:—
The king has taken the homage of Roger de Huntingfeld and William de Picheford, who married two of the daughters and heirs of William de Hobrugg, for the lands which the said William held of the king in chief, and which belong to the said wives by inheritance, so that if Hillaria, the third daughter of the said William, to whom it is imputed that she is at Kampes[y] in the habit of religion, should come to seek her share of the said lands, the said Roger and William should render to her her reasonable part; and the sheriff of Cambridge is commanded to take security from them of 50s. and two palfreys.
In similar extracts of 25 Edward I, (it is found) thus:—
Because Joan de Huntingfeld, who held of the king in chief, has died, the king’s escheator is commanded [to take into the king’s hand] all her lands and tenements, &c.—7 September.
In similar extracts of 26 Edward I, thus:—
The king has taken the fealty of Roger de Huntingfeld, grandson and heir of Joan de Huntingfeld, of Norfolk, for all the lands &c. which the said Joan, grandmother of the said Roger, held of the king in chief, and has restored them to him, and commanded his escheator to take security from the said Roger for payment of his reasonable relief at the king’s exchequer, and that he should come before the king, on his next arrival in England, to do homage.—28 November.
In similar extracts of 31 Edward I, thus:—
Because Roger de Huntingfeld, who held of the king in chief, has died, the king’s escheator is commanded to take all his lands &c. into the king’s hand.—5 December.
And in the same extracts, thus:—
The king has taken the homage of William, son and heir of Roger de Huntingfeld, of all the lands &c. which the said Roger, his father, held of the king in chief, and restored them to him, and the king’s escheator is ordered to take security from the said William for payment of his reasonable relief, and to give him full seisin, saving every one’s right, and to Joyce (Jocosa), late the wife of the said Roger, her reasonable dower.—4 March.
In the roll of memoranda 33 Edward I, among the fines of Michaelmas term, they find that the said William de Huntingfeld is charged with divers reliefs for the lands which were of his ancestors, thus:—
William de Huntingfeld, son and heir of Roger de Huntingfeld, gives to the king 25s. for his relief, for all [the lands &c. which] his father held of the king in chief, viz. for a quarter of a knight’s fee in Bokesworth, co. Cambridge, as acknowledged, and as found in the book of fees. And he gives to the king other 25s., for the relief of the said Roger his father, grandson and heir of Joan de Huntingfeld, for all the lands &c. which the said Joan held of the king in chief, viz. the said quarter of a knight’s fee in Bokesworth, as acknowledged, and as found in the said book of fees.
In the account of Walter de Gloucester for the escheatry on this side Trent, 31 Edward I, they find that he is charged, amongst other things, for 8l. 5s. 1 3/4d. of assised rent, and other issues of the manor of Bokesworth, co. Cambridge, which was of Roger de Huntingfeld, and which he held of the king in chief by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee; the manor of Mokelyntone, co. Essex, which was of the same Roger, and which he held of John Filiol by knight’s service; the manor of Bradenham, co. Norfolk, which was of the same Roger, and which he held of the earl of Lincoln by service of a third part of a knight’s fee; and the manors of Fremton and Toft, co. Lincoln, which were of the said Roger, and which he held of Roger de Pedewardyn and Alice his wife, by service of three knight’s fees; from 20 November, 31 [Edward I], on which day he died, to 5 March next following, before the livery, by the king’s writ, of the said manors to William, son and heir of the said Roger.
Whereupon after diligent consultation with the king’s justices of the bench, serjeants, and others of the council, they do not know how to put any interpretation on the words in Domesday Book except as they sound, but after consideration of the premises, it does not seem to them that the king should remove his hand from the aforesaid lands, unless any other matter shall be shown by the parties suing, who should be heard thereon.
