Red Lion Court, Minories

East out of Minories, west of Morley's Court (P.C. 1732-O.S. 25 in. 1880). In Portsoken Ward.

On the boundary of the Ward (Strype, ed. 1720, I. ii. 26).

Former names : " Red Lyon Alley," 1658 (Midd. Sess. Rolls, III. 273-Rocque, 1746). "Red Lion Alley" (Hatton, 1708-Strype, 1720).

It is differently planned in the earlier maps, running east and west, instead of north and south as in the O.S.

Site is now covered by Railway goods' depäts.

Red Lion Court, St. Katherine 's

West out of St. Katherine's Lane, north of Flemings Church Yard (P.C. 1732-Lockie, 1810).

Removed for the formation of St. Katherine Docks and the adjacent warehouses 1827.

Red Lion Court.-

North out of Fleet Street, at No. 170, to Great New Street (P.O. Directory), east of Fetter Lane. In Farringdon Ward Without.

First mention: O. and M. 1677.

Named after the Red Lion Tavern here, mentioned 1592, and again in July, 1666, a few weeks before the Fire (Noble, 113).

Red Lion, East Smithfleld

Brewhouse so called, which belonged to St. Mary Graces, near the brewhouse called " Le three Kyngs," and the messuage called "Le Katherine Wheele," 31 H. VIII. 1540, 37 H. VIII. and 39 Eliz. (Cal. L. and M. Ft. of Fines, 11.64; L. and P. H. VIII. XV. p. 108; Lond. I. p.m. III. p.255).

There is still a large brewery so called on the north-east side of Lower East Smithfield, shown in O.S.1875.

In Cornhill, called also White Lyon Alley (q.v.) (P.C. 1732).

Named after the sign. It has been suggested that the sign originated with the badge of John of Gaunt.

Red Lyon Court

In Throgmorton Street, a small Court in Broad Street Ward, against Drapers' Hall (Hatton, 1708-P.C. 1732).

The site seems to be occupied by Throgmorton Avenue.

Red Lyon Court

South out of St. Paul's Churchyard to Little Carter Lane, in Castle L Baynard Ward (O. and M. 1677-Strype, 1755).

The greater part of the site is now occupied by the western extension of Cannon Street.

Red Lyon Court, Alley

East out of Bishopsgate Street in Bishopsgate Ward Without, leading to Red Lyon Inn (O. and M. 1677), with two passages out of Bishopsgate Street.

"Red Lion Court" (P.C. 1732). "Red Lion Inn Yard" (Lond. G. 1758-Boyle, 1799). The two passages are not shown in Rocque's map, 1746, the inn only being shown, standing in its own yard.

Site has been rebuilt and is now occupied by offices and chambers.

The site has been rebuilt and is now occupied by business houses.

Called" Red Lyon and Axe Inn " in Strype, 1720 and 1755. The site is now occupied by offices and business houses.

Red Lyon Inn

East out of Bishopsgate in Bishopsgate Ward Without (O. and M. 1677-Boyle, 1799).

In 1673 a way was enclosed through Spittlefields from the Red Lion to Smock Alley (L. and P. Chas. II. D.S. XV. 351). Qy. Identical.
