Appending : (a) Order of the King in Council, dated Hampton Court, May 30 last, made upon reading a presentment from the Customs Commissioners setting forth that the coast and Channel are very much infested by French privateers whereby the Virginia ships and the wine ships which lately put into the Western ports and other ships coming through the Channel (which pay considerably to the revenue) are in great danger. It is hereby ordered that said Commissioners be informed that there are six frigates cruising in the Soundings, three or four between the Isle of Wight and the islands of Jersey and Guernsey, and that there are some of his Majesty's frigates cruising between Calais and the South Foreland.

Treasury warrant to same to observe an Order of the King in Council, dated Whitehall May 30 ult., to give permission to any ship which was in any port of the islands of Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, Sark or the Isle of Man within the time fixed by the Proclamation of the 18th inst. May (which prohibited the importation or retailing of any commodities of the growth or manufacture of France) to import into England or Wales on payment of the usual duties such [of the said] commodities as had been already imported to said islands and there lodged and detained for want of conveyance hither by reason of the present disturbance of affairs.
[Other than as above] the said Proclamation is also hereby to be put in execution by prosecuting goods imported contrary thereto : the Customs Commissioners having expressed a doubt whether an information will lie on the said Proclamation ; on which doubt the King has taken the advice of his learned counsel.

Royal warrant to the Clerk of the Signet for a privy seal for 50,000l. to Richard, Lord Coote, of Colooney, Treasurer to the Queen : as imprest for the service of the Queen. King's Warrant Book XIV, p. 121.
Same to same for a same for the salary of 210l. per an. to the supervisor or conservator and the keepers of Dean Forest, viz. 100l. per an. to Capt. William Wolseley, supervisor or conservator, 80l. per an. amongst the six keepers there and 30l. per an. to be distributed according to the quantity of enclosures within their respective walks and districts : (which fees were granted by James II) : and further for the payment of 525l. for 2½ years' arrears thereon to Lady day last, which cannot be paid [without the present authorisation] by reason that the privy seal of James II is void. Royal warrant to the Clerk of the Signet for a privy seal dormant for payment of sums amounting to 850l. per an. to William Blathwait, constant attendant upon the business of the Plantation Office (the Committee of Trade and Plantations), viz. 400l. per an. for the Clerks of the Privy Council in attendance thereon ; 250l. per an. to said Blathwayt for constant attendance thereon ; 150l. per an. to the three clerks constantly employed therein ; 50l. per an. to a messenger and his assistant : together with all such extraordinaries as shall be certified by any three of the Lords of said Committee : all to be payable quarterly as from Lady day last. Same to the Customs Commissioners to instruct, by this post, the collectors of the ports of Newcastle, Berwick, Carlisle, Lancaster, Liverpool, Chester and other the northern ports to pay to Charles Toll, Deputy Paymaster of the Forces (who is gone into the North with the Commissioners for Regulating the Army) all such money as they have or shall receive of their respective collections ; and to take said Toll's bills on the Earl of Ranelagh [for their reimbursement]. The Treasury Lords to the Commissioners of the Great Seal. You scruple to pass the grant to Col. Berkeley and Mr. Walters of the office of one of the two searchers at Gravesend because of their power to act by deputy. The patents of this nature usually pass with this clause and in the member ports the service requires such deputies "and Gravesend being no other than a member of the port of London, where deputies have often been appointed, we desire that such deputies as this Board shall approve of may be authorized to act as hath been usually practised in the like cases. If the case of those petitioners is similar to those intended to be relieved by the Order in Council of May 30 last [supra, p. 146] the salt is to be admitted to entry on paying the usual duty.

William Jephson to the Earl of Ranelagh to report on the petition of Elizabeth Brebam, shewing that her husband, Francis Brebam, served as kettle drummer to the 2nd Troop of Guards and is in arrear several liveries which he ought to receive with the Trumpeters and is now gone with the Troop to Holland and left her with nothing to maintain her. Consequently the Treasury Lords cannot meddle therewith. "But if the allowance appear to be too small my Lords will make such further allowance to the Receiver of your county upon the making up of his accounts as shall be found reasonable."
