Indenture witnessing that in consideration of his debt to Sir John of 300l. he has 'graunted, betaken and to ferme leten' the manors of Assheby David, Yerdley, Towecetre and Dame Ellyngesbery with appurtenances for 20 years from Michaelmas last without payment for the first 3 years and thereafter for 200 m. a year, with right of distress; during the said 3 years Sir John will pay from the issues 40l. twice yearly to John Kyrkeby, tailor of London, till he has discharged the earl's debt to him of 208l.; to be voided if the earl die within the said 20 years; bond for performance in 1,000l. (i) Indenture between George Kyrkbryd esquire on the one part and John Dalston, Thomas Beauchamp and Robert Clybborn gentlemen and their respective wives Elizabeth, Isabel and Emmot, his daughters and heirs apparent, of the other: whereas Walter Kyrkbryd knight, son of Richard, gave to Richard his son, ancestor of George, and the heirs of his body lawfully begotten, the manors of Kyrkbryd and Dokray and his lands in Kyrbryd, Dokray, Morehouse, Wygton and Ulton (fn. 4) co. Cumberland, by deed dated 1330, which is greatly impaired by evil keeping and the seal defaced since it came into George's hands, as he has deposed in Chancery; and whereas since that date one Richard Kyrkbrid, besaiel (veseall) of George, contrary to right and good conscience discontinued the premises and took estate to himself and the heirs male of his body contrary to the first entail, whereof great variance may hereafter ensue between his heirs male and the general heirs of Richard son of Walter, 'wherof myght ensue grete trouble, costes and charges and displesure amonge theym and their frendes'; and whereas George accordingly desired Roger bishop of Carlisle, Humphrey Conyngesby serjeant at law and other men of honour of that country to advise 'howe the trouth of the premisses shall ever herafter appere and howe the seid George myght best do to order the seid maneres, londes and tenementes in his lif rightwysly and accordyng to trouth and gode conscience and to eschewe the seid troubles,' and Roger and Humphrey at his desire have witnessed under their seals the said deed of general entail: George now covenants and agrees that he will do all things to enforce the gift to the heirs general and the deed containing it and will make estate of the premises and of all his other fee simple lands etc. which his brother Richard Kyrkbrid and Jane wife of Richard Skelton severally hold for term of their lives by his deed tripartite to be enrolled in Chancery to Sir Edward Crakanthorp parson of Asby, Sir Ninian Kyrkbrid parson of Kyrkbrid, Sir Richard Suthak (fn. 5) parson of Bolton and Sir Roland Clybborne clerk and their heirs in fee simple to the use of George and the heirs of his body with remainder to the heirs of the body of Richard son of Walter Kyrkbrid according to the form and effect of the old deed of entail, and that the feoffees shall stand seised thereof during his life without making estate to any person, provided always that at the reasonable request of John, Thomas and Robert and their wives or any of them or their heirs they shall allow others to recover against them to the same use; George is to have liberty to grant out of the premises to Annes his wife an annuity of 10l. for life, with a proviso that after his death she release to the feoffees her title in the residue. Indenture between the king and Richard earl of Kent: whereas in Michaelmas term last past Richard bishop of Winchester, Giles Daubney knight lord Daubney, Thomas Lovell, Richard Emson and James Hubart knights, Edmund Dudley, Thomas Lucas and others recovered against the earl the manors and lordships of Ruthyn and Dyffryncloyde with 10,000 a. land, 4,000 a. meadow, 4,000 a. pasture, 4,000 a. wood and 100l. rent, being manors and lordships royal in Wales and therefore recovered in Shropshire as the county next adjoinant; and whereas the earl is indebted to the king in divers great sums of money, viz. (a) 1,800l. for livery of his lands and for debts with which the lands were chargeable by bargains made by his father George late earl of Kent and (b) 4,000l. by recognizance (No. 553, above) whose days of payment were then plainly past; and forasmuch as he 'was not of power, habilite ne havyour to content and pay to our seid Sovereign lorde the seid sommes of money . . . without in maner his utter undoyng unlesse the kynges highnes of his most gracious and benigne mercye and pitye liste to consider his grete daunger that the same Erle was like to renne and fall in by meanes of the same'; the king of his great mercy and abundant grace is pleased to accept in satisfaction of (b) the reversion of the premises to himself and his heirs for ever after the earl's death, and in satisfaction of (a) the issues and profits of the same, of the yearly value of 216l., and also of the manors of Podyngton, Tyngryff, Brookeburgh and Northwode co. Bedford and Yardeley Hastynges co. Northampton, affirmed to be of the yearly value of 84l., making 300l. in all, from Easter last till the sum of 1,800l. is paid; if the earl live till (a) is paid in full, he shall then receive an annual rent of 216l. for life from the premises in Wales, and the other manors etc. shall be ensured to him and his heirs for ever; the premises in Wales to be discharged and evidences concerning them delivered before Michaelmas next. (i) Confirmation of deed dated 31 Dec., 1496, whereby John late abbot and the prior and convent bound themselves to find a monk to say mass daily while the world shall endure at the altar and shrine in St. Edward's chapel for her good estate during life and for her soul after her decease; masses to be said on Sunday and principal feasts in the time of the chapter and on other days immediately after chapter mass; the monk henceforth to say every Sunday mass of Holy Trinity, every Monday of requiem, every Tuesday of St. Edward, every Wednesday of the Holy Ghost, every Thursday de corpore Christi, every Friday de quinque vulneribus Christi and every Saturday of Our Lady.
[m. 20d.] (ii) Whereas by the king's letters patent (fn. 8) she has granted to them the advowsons of Swyneshede co. Lincoln and Chesthunt co. Hertford, accepted at the yearly value of 26l. 13s. 4d. each, besides Drayton manor with lands in Middlesex late purchased of Sir Reynold Bray knight and accepted at the yearly value of 27l. 13s. 4d., and lands in Great Chesterford co. Essex to the yearly value of 6l., in consideration of these grants to the total yearly value of 87l. they undertake to find in fulfilment of her devout mind and intent, as more fully expressed below, two additional chantry masses and an anniversary assessed at the yearly cost of 30l., a 'converse' assessed at 100s., readers in theology at Oxford and Cambridge receiving annuities of 13l. 6s. 8d. each and a perpetual preacher at Cambridge receiving 10l., making a total of 71l. 13s. 4d. She has also given them books, chalices, vestments and other ornaments to be used and occupied only about the altars where the chantry masses shall be said and intends to give them many more. Moreover at her great costs and charges she has purchased of the Pope bulls of great indulgence and pardons for all persons seeing or hearing any of the said two chantry masses or any other mass to be said by any priest at the altars provided therefor, as great as is in the place called Scala Celi beside Rome, and daily plain remission to the great comfort and relief of the monastery and of all Christian people resorting thereunto. At her desire they have surrendered as much of the licence for 150l. as should have been of the yearly value of 107l., and they shall take the advantage to purchase at their pleasure lands to the yearly value of the 9l. 6s. 8d. yet remaining unpurchased and unsurrendered. Whereupon they bind themselves, in addition to the daily mass in St. Edward's chapel, to observe the following.

[m. 23d.] (iv) A solemn anniversary to be observed during her life on 31 May for the souls of her husbands, her parents and ancestors, the late queen Elizabeth etc. and after her decease on the day of her sepulture for her soul also, and for the soul of the king her son after his decease; the abbot (if present), prior and convent to come together on the eve of the anniversary in the choir 'revested in honourable and solempne wise' and there sing solemnly with note placebo and dirige with nine lessons and the lauds with orations and observances; on the day itself the abbot to sing mass of Requiem with note, all the convent helping and the bells being solemnly rung as in any other most solemn anniversaries there holden, with collects etc. (recited) and a hearse of 70 tapers; to be followed by distribution of 12d. each to every monk priest of the monastery helping in the masses etc., 20d. to every such lying sick, 6d. to every monk professed and no priest and to every converse, 4d. to every monk neither professed nor priest, 10s. to the abbot being present or sick or absent for a reasonable cause and 6s. 8d. to the prior on like terms, besides 10l. in alms to the poor between 8 a.m. and noon at the rate of 1d. each, the residue (if any) being divided among the lame, blind, bed-rid and most poor folk within the monastery, in the town of Westminster or the city and suburbs of London, or the prisoners of the King's Bench and 'Marchalsie' and in the city of London, and payments of 13s. 4d. to the monk distributing the same; if the anniversary should fall upon Palm Sunday or within 12 days after Ascension etc. or on the day of the king's weekly obit, it shall be observed within the 15 days ensuing.
(v) One brother called a 'converse' to be found in the monastery, in addition to the six already found and the two ordained by the king, to attend and serve the said chantry monks and others saying mass at the same altar, to keep the countess's chapel and lights and after that to do such other things as the other converses use to do, receiving the customary meat, drink, clothing and lodging.
[m. 24d.] [m. 25d.] [m. 26d.] (vi) Whereas by the king's licence (fn. 9) the countess by her several letters patent in the form of indentures tripartite (Latin: recited), both dated the Nativity of St. Mary, 18 Henry VII [18 Sept. 1502], has founded perpetual readerships of theology in the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, the first readers being respectively master John Roper and master John Fyssher, the abbot, prior and convent by their several deeds (Latin: recited), both dated 1 July 1503, have granted to the said readers and their successors perpetual annuities of 13l. 6s. 8d. each issuing from the said lands in Middlesex and Essex, with a clause of distress and a penalty of 40s. a day for default.
[m. 27d.] [m. 28d.] (vii) And, whereas by the king's licence (fn. 10) the countess by her letters patent (Latin: recited) in like form dated 30 Oct., 20 Henry VII, has founded a perpetual chantry of a preacher of God's Word in the university of Cambridge with the status of a corporation (unum corpus re et nomine), the first preacher being master John Fawn bachelor of theology, to preach at least six solemn and public sermons a year, viz. one at St. Paul's Cross, London (or, if ever he is not there admitted, in St. Margaret's church, Westminster, or failing that at any more excellent church in the city of London, but at least once every two years at Paul's Cross without fail) and in the churches of Chesthunt and Ware, London diocese, Bassingbourn, Orwell and Babram, Ely diocese, Maxey, Depyng (viz. the two parish churches of St. James and St. Andrew), Burn, Boston and Swynneshede, Lincoln diocese, at his pleasure, the abbot, prior and convent by their deed (Latin: recited) dated 6 Nov., 1505, have granted to the said preacher a like annuity of 10l. with a like clause and penalty of 20s. a day.
(viii) If any of the said advowsons or lands should be lawfully evicted out of their possession to their loss, their obligations shall be proportionately abated in form following, viz. first the 70 tapers and distribution of alms at the anniversaries, second the preacher's annuity, third the finding of the converse, fourth the rewards of abbot, prior and monks at anniversaries; the readers' salaries shall be paid notwithstanding any such eviction. Each successive abbot shall take an oath in the chapter-house, holding in his hands the part of these indentures sealed with the countess's seal, to observe all these covenants as he shall answer before Almighty God at the dreadful day of final judgment.
