Footnotes

  • 1. D. (as preb.?) 22 Sept. 1294 (Ann. Mon. iv 517; Flores Historiarum 111 90, 275-6).
  • 2. The catalogue (WD 2 f. 111b/118b) is as follows: John de Luco William de Sardene Richard de Neweport Gerald de Ingolisma Thomas de Charlton Ralph Baldock Thomas de Astelay Robert de Redeswell John Swynle Adam Holm (written over an erasure) William Stortford. This list is continued later than those for other prebends in the catalogue. The names from Thomas de Charlton are written by the same hand, after 1399, when Stortford became prebendary. This may account for the complete unreliability of the order of names. The lists of other prebends frequently omit names in the early fourteenth century, though their order is generally reliable, and it seems probable that the later compiler, knowing that Baldock, Astley and Charlton had held the prebend, simply wrote their names after that of Engolisma. Subsequent names are in the correct order, though the compiler seems ignorant of at least four of the holders. The catalogue of Liber F (Brit. Mus., Harley MS. 6956 f. 95b) gives merely John de Luco, William de Sardene, Richard de Newport.
  • 3. This is probably an error for the resignation of William Say, who d. as dean by 24 Nov. 1468 (Reg. T. Kempe pt. i f. 115). The whole entry seems unreliable. See p. 45 n. 1, and p. 57 n. 1.
  • 4. 'Richard Ewen' seems the correct reading, as the prebend of Islington was vacant the very day that Richard became prebendary of Mapesbury, 16 May 1459 (Reg. T. Kempe pt. i ff. 65, 65b).
