Osbern Masculus

First preb. in cats., 'Osbernus masculus'. Not otherwise known. Not to be identified with Osbert Masculus, who occ. c. 1128 (Davis, London lands p. 56) and c. 19 Apr. 1142, who was not a can. (Gibbs no. 219).

Geoffrey Masculus

Occ. in cats. between Osbern Masculus and Hugh, 'Gaufridus filius eius', i.e. son of Osbern Masculus. Only certain occ. as can. 1104/5 (WD 4 fo. 19/23r-v, pd. in Rep. p. 61b), but perhaps also 19 July 1111 (WD 4 fos. 53/57v-54/58r, pd. in Rep. pp. 67b- 68a), and [c. 1108 × Apr. 1138] (WD 4 fo. 25/29r-v, pd. in Rep. p. 62b). (fn. 1) Commem. 31 Jan. (Obits. I fo. 10r, II fo. 107r, IV pp. 62, 75), 30 Jan. (Obit. III fo. 94v).

Hugh

Occ. in cats. between Geoffrey Masculus and Henry son of Hugh, 'Hugo archidiaconus'. Presum. to be identified with Hugh, archdcn. of Middlesex, from c. 1128 to 1138.

Henry son of Hugh (fn. 2)

Occ. in cats. between Hugh and John Cumin, 'Henricus filius eius', i.e. son of Hugh the archdcn. Occ., presum. not yet can., [1114 × Apr. 1138] (Gibbs no. 218). (fn. 3) Possibly to be identified with Henry mag. schol., who occ. from before 1127 to 1150, or later (see above p. 25).

M. John Cumin (fn. 4)

Occ. in cats. between Henry son of Hugh and Osbert de Camera, 'Johannes Cumin [Comyn, Cat. II]'. Does not occ. as can. Presum. to be identified with John Cumin, archdcn. of Bath from c. 1166, who became abp. of Dublin, el. 6 Sept. 1181 (Gesta Hen. II 1 280-1), cons. 21 March 1182 (ibid. p. 287).

M. Osbert de Camera

Occ. in cats. between John Cumin and Peter of Blois, 'Robertus de Camera'. Robert de Camera not otherwise known. Cats. almost certainly in error for Osbert de Camera, who occ. frequently as can., and for whom otherwise no preb. is known. First certain occ. as can. 1184/5 (B.M., Harley MS. 6956 fo. 84r, from missing Liber F fo. 33, pd. in T. Madox, Hist. and Antiquities of the Exchequer (1711) p. 146 n. d), but may occ. earlier, perhaps [1180 × c. 1181] (G.F.L. no. 387). Occ. c. 1192 (D.S.R. I). Apparently can. of St. Paul's by 1212 (see Richardson, Guala pp. 252-3), but presum. unident. preb., from which transf. to this preb. c. 1214. Also chanc. before Apr. 1214, to depr. in Oct. 1217. Occ. without title after Nov. 1216 (Moore, St. Barts. 1 297 n. 2).

Thomas de Urso

Occ. in cats. between Gervase of Howbridge and Peter de Neuport, 'Thomas de Urso'. Not otherwise known.

M. Peter de Neuport

Occ. in cats. between Thomas de Urso and John de Wengham, 'Petrus cantor'. Presum. to be identified with Peter de Neuport, successively precentor, by Apr. 1234; archdcn. of London, before June 1236; dean, ?June 1261.

John Maunsel

Occ. in Cat. II between John de Wengham and Edmund Trussel, 'Johannes Maunsel'. Presum. misplaced if to be identified with John Maunsel, chanc. from May 1243 to d. in Jan. 1265, and also preb. of Caddington Minor (ineffective gr.) and Totenhall.

M. John de Wengham

Occ. in cats. between Peter de Neuport and John Maunsel, 'Johannes de Wengham precentor'. Possibly appd. before July 1262 by his uncle Henry de Wengham I, bp. of London (1260-62) (cf. Reg. Alex. IV no. 2935). Occ. this preb. c. 1294 (Liber F valor). (fn. 8) Also precentor by Aug. 1262, to May 1299 or later; d. by 31 Aug. 1305.
