Ralph son of Algod

First preb. in cats., 'Radulphus filius Algodi'. First certain occ. as can. 1104/5 (WD 4 fo. 19/23r-v, pd. in Rep. p. 61b), but perhaps to be identified with Ralph the can., who held Rugmere of cans.' demesne in 1086 (Domesday Book 1 fo. 127b). Last occ. 1132/3 (WD 4 fo. 53/57r-v, pd. in Rep. p. 67b). Perhaps to be identified with the citizen of London who occ. 1125 (cart. of Holy Trinity, Aldgate: B.M., Lansdowne MS. 448 fo. 9v), and 1137 (Round, Commune of London pp. 101-2). Perhaps to be identified also with Raulf son of Algot, who occ. early twelfth cent. (Liber Vitae Dunelm.: Facsimile, ed. A. H. Thompson (Surtees Soc. cxxxvi) fo. 42r), and therefore perhaps brother of Edmund, preb. of Chiswick (see above pp. 40-1).

William son of Ralph

Occ. in cats. between Ralph son of Algod and Ralph de Chiltone, 'Willelmus filius eius', i.e. son of Ralph son of Algod. Perhaps to be identified with William son of Ralph who occ., not as can., [Apr. 1138 × c. 1152] (WD 4 fo. 29/33v, pd. in Rep. p. 64a). (fn. 1)

Ralph de Chiltone (fn. 2)

Occ. in cats. between William son of Ralph and John Witing, 'Radulphus de Chilton. [Chilthone, Cat. II]'. Apparently not appd. until after c. 1181, when still called clk. (G.F.L. no. 446, cf. nos. 365, 440-1). First occ. as can. c. Dec. 1182 (A/21/1577), (fn. 3) and 1183/4 (G.F.L. no. 403). Last occ. [1186 × 87] (G.F.L. no. 408).

M. John Witing (fn. 4)

Occ. in cats. between Ralph de Chiltone and Cinthius the Roman, 'Johannes Wyting [Witung, Cat. II]'. Apparently not appd. until after c. Jan. 1190, in or after which date still called clk. (Cheney, Eng. Bps.' Chanceries p. 156). First occ. as can. [c. 1190 × 1192] (B.M., Harley MS. 6956 fo. 160v, from an original deed formerly in St. Paul's pyx 'H'), (fn. 5) and c. 1192 (D.S.R. I). Last certain occ. as can. 1 March 1223 (A/29/344), but may occ. later, [1222 × March 1226] (A/33/753; A/36/1020). (fn. 6) Commem. 1 Sept. (Obit. IV pp. 70, 95), but apparently this was originally the date of commem. of John's father, William (Obit. II fo. 109r).

M. Cinthius the Roman

Occ. in cats. between John Witing and William de Rising, 'Einchius Romanus'. 'Einchius' otherwise unknown, and cats. must be in error for 'Cinthius'. First occ. as can. before June 1229 (B.M., Harley MS. 6956 fo. 133r, from an original deed formerly in St. Paul's pyx 'T'). (fn. 7) Occ. as can. 17 Dec. 1231 (Chron. Maj. 111 210). Last occ. as can. [1231 × 37] (Gibbs nos. 113-14). Commem. 6 Nov. (Obits. II fo. 109v, III fo. 96v, IV pp. 72, 100). Prob. to be identified with Cinthius, papal subdeacon and chapl. (cf. Reg. Greg. IX nos. 227, 249, 333, 340, 4794), and with Cinthius de Sancto Eustachio, papal subdeacon and chapl., who occ. June 1238 (cart. of Binham: B.M., Cotton MS. Claud. D. xiii fo. 124v), and occ. as can. of Rheims, Apr. 1242 (ibid. fo. 124r).

M. William de Rising (fn. 8)

Occ. in cats. between Cinthius the Roman and Nicholas de Bladintone, 'Willelmus de Rising [Ristag', Cat. II] archidiaconus Lond.'. Occ., not called can., 11 July 1218 (cart. of Waltham: B.M., Harley MS. 391 fo. 113r), [1218 × 19] (Gibbs no. 195), and 11 July 1223 (B.M., Harley MS. 6956 fo. 165v, from an original deed formerly in a St. Paul's pyx). Does not occ. as can., but precentor, [June 1225 × May 1226]; archdcn. of London by March 1234, to some time before June 1236. Presum. held an unident. preb. before d. or res. of Cinthius the Roman.

M. Nicholas de Bladintone

Occ. in cats. between William de Rising and Walter Niger, 'Nicholas de Bladintone [Bladinthone, Cat. II]'. Occ. as can. once only, between June 1235 and June 1236 (reg. J. Stokesley: Guildhall Libr., MS. 9531/11 fo. 54v).

M. Walter Niger alias of London

Occ. in cats. between Nicholas de Bladintone and Richard de Wendover, 'Walterus Niger'. Occ., not yet can., [Oct. 1229 × June 1230] (Gibbs no. 64; cf. Gibbs no. 241 of [May 1225 × July 1228]). (fn. 9) Said to have begun residence at Michaelmas and to have d. at the following Christmas, prob. 1238 (Statutes p. 187; (fn. 10) cf. Reg. Greg. IX no. 4406). Brother of Roger Niger, bp. of London (1229-41) (Gibbs no. 64).

M. Richard de Wendover alias Physicus

Occ. in cats. between Walter Niger and Walter de Salerne, 'Ricardus de Wendover'. Appd. by bp. after Dec. 1238, in succession to Walter Niger, and said to be resident can., evidently transferring from preb. of Nesden to this preb. ('commutavit', Statutes p. 187). Last occ. as can. 5 Jan. 1251 (A/30/461). D. 1252 (Chron. Maj. v 299). Commem. 5 March (Obits. II fo. 107v, III fo. 95r, IV pp. 64, 78). So presum. d. March 1252 or March 1253.

M. Walter de Salerne alias of London

Occ. in cats. between Richard de Wendover and Rostand, 'Walterus de Salerne'. Occ., not called can., holding land in parish of St. Botulph without Aldersgate, 1246 (St. Barts. Hosp., box St. Botulph, no. 1208; cf. Moore, St. Barts. 1 430 n.). Occ. as can. once only, [May 1251 × Apr. 1254] (A/9/281). (fn. 11) Also dean from Apr. 1254 to 1257, before Aug.

M. Rostand

Occ. in cats. between Walter de Salerne and Jordan, 'Rostandus [Rastandus, Cat. II]'. Does not occ. in St. Paul's documents. Papal subdeacon and collector. Occ. in England Sept. 1255-June 1256, Feb.-July 1257, and from March 1258 to d. (Lunt, Financial Relations pp. 615-16). Res. preb. of St. Paul's to become a monk, before Feb. 1259 (Ann. Dunstable, Ann. Mon. 111 214), but preb. not mentioned in papal conf. of various benefices, 18 Jan. 1259 (Reg. Alex. IV no. 2812). D. before 29 Oct. 1261 (Reg. Urbain IV no. 25).

John of Crakehall (fn. 12)

Said to have been granted preb. by dean and chapter, in succession to Rostand, before Feb. 1259 (Ann. Dunstable, Ann. Mon. 111 214), presum. by nom. of king (cf. Gerv. Cant. (cont.) 11 208). But ousted by papal nominee, Jordan Piruntus (see below). D. 1260 (Rot. Gravesend p. 215).

Jordan Piruntus

Occ. in cats. between Rostand and Osbert the Roman, 'Jordanus vicecancellar' domini pape'. Papal nominee in succession to Rostand, instal. 27 Feb. 1259 (Ann. Dunstable, Ann. Mon. 111 214: 'quidam Romanus'). Papal vice-chanc.; cardinal deacon of SS. Cosma e Damiano, prov. May 1262, d. Oct. 1269 (Hierarchia Catholica Medii Aevi, ed. C. Eubel (Münster, 1913-23) 1 49).

Osbert the Roman

Occ. in cats. between Jordan Piruntus and William de Chaddleshunt, 'Osbertus Romanus'. Occ. this preb. c. 1294 (Liber F valor). (fn. 13) Abp.'s mandate for restoration in place of Reginald de Sancto Albano, who does not otherwise occ. in this preb., 11 Apr. 1303 (Reg. Winchelsey 11 774, where he is called 'Obert').
