PREBEND

Church of Brixworth (Northants) on royal manor 1066 and 1086 (DB I 219b); Shipton under Wychwood (Oxon.) royal manor 1086 (ibid. p. 154d), with 4 hides there and in Swinbrook held of Goisfridus, king's minister (ibid. p. 160d). One preb. created for G- son of Amulph the falconer before 1099 (cf. RSO I 383) and second preb. created for Arnulph's second son Humphrey before 1116 (ibid., and Kealey pp. 234-5). Lands and churches in Shipton, Swinbrook and Brixworth, formerly held by Joseph, conf. as preb. before 1116 (Regesta II no. 1163): not clear if one or two prebs.

Two prebs. prob. in existence by c. 1150 (Psalter list). Churches of Brixworth and Shipton, Swinbrook and Uffecote given by Arnulph the falconer, conf. by Henry II 1158 (RSO I 204). Shipton presum. included in Brixworth preb. in taxation list of 1220s (C. 462, pd. Sar. Chs. p. 207). Separation of prebs. in settlement of 1223 x 1224 (Sar. Chs. pp. 102-5; cf. Rot. Welles II 116-17, 22). Two distinct prebs. by Oct. 1226 x Feb. 1227 (app. 1). Brixworth preb. annexed to chancellorship 6 Nov. 1240 (Sar. Chs. 259-60; cf. Sar. Stats. p. 82). Dependent chapels of Swinbrook, Idbury and Fifield (Oxon.) evidently part of Brixworth preb. (III/Chancellor/n.d.; cf. IV/E.4/Idbury & Swinbrook; Reg. Sutton IV 161-2). For preb. Humphrey

Son of Arnulph the falconer, pres. by his father to preb. founded by him, conf. by bp. Roger and Henry I c. 1115 (RSO I 383, not in Regesta II; cf. Kealey p. 234; and G-, can., list 66). Possibly to be identified with Humphrey who witnessed as can. mid to late 1150s, and was perhaps a member of the Brimpton family (Mon. Ang. IV 400 (XIII)). (fn. 1)

Richard of Brimpton (fn. 2)

Occ. this preb. c. 1133 x 1169 (IV/E.4/Brixworth/41; cf. ibid. no. 22). (fn. 3) Prob. to be identified with Richard can. who witnessed a ch., 1142 x c. 1180, of Robert of Brimpton, perhaps his father (Mon. Ang. IV 400 (X), (fn. 4) cf. ibid. pp. 398-9 (II, III).

M. Robert of Brimpton (fn. 5)

First occ. as can. 7 Jan. 1213/14 (Nova Const.), and prob. can. 14 Nov. 1215 (C. 479, witnesses omitted in Sar. Chs. p. 79). Occ. this preb. after 1215 (Rot. Welles II 4-5), and several times n.d. (IV/E.4/Brixworth/3, 6, 10, 20, 30, 34). Prob. to be identified with Robert, who occ. this preb. [1210] and c. 1211 (Cart. St Frideswide II 245-6, 246-7). Last occ. as can. 15 and 18 Aug. 1222 (Sar. Stats. p. 70, also pd. RSO II 18; RSO I 339).

M. Adam de Essebi

Pres. to this preb. between Dec. 1223 and Dec. 1224 (Rot. Welles II 116-17). Occ. this preb. several times, including Oct. 1226 x Feb. 1227 (app. 1), n.d. (IV/E.4/Brixworth/27), Oct. 1231 x Oct. 1232 (ibid. nos. 3, 34). Agreement between him and Elias Ridel, preb. Shipton (list 53), over land in Shipton, 21 May 1225 (III/Chancellor/21 May 1225). Called preb. Shipton 2 Apr. 1232 (Close R. 1231-4 p. 46). Still can. 19 Oct. 1233 (Sar. Chs. p. 230, where, following MSS, he is called 'Mag. H. de Esseby'). Subdean by 17 Feb. 1236 (list 11); chanc. by 24 Feb. 1237/8 (list 4). Still alive, his preb. annexed to chancellorship 6 Nov. 1240 (Sar. Chs. pp. 259-60). D. as preb. and had been succeeded before 16 June 1241 (see below, and Reg. Innoc. IV no. 331, temp. pope Gregory IX, cal. CPL I 203).

M. Ralph de Hecham

Pres. to this preb. some time between 6 Nov. 1240 and 16 June 1241 (see above, and Rot. Grosseteste p. 200); inst. between June 1244 and June 1245 (ibid. p. 221). Suit over this preb. with Albert can. of Milan, 16 Dec. 1243 (see below); going to Rome 13 Feb. 1244/5 (C. 453); papal mandate to him, 13 July 1258, concerning composition whereby he was to pay Albert 50 marks p.a. (see below). Chanc. from between 6 Nov. 1240 and 16 June 1241, d. prob. c. 21 Nov. 1271 (list 4).

[M. Albert de Castro Sepio

Can. of Milan, had papal prov. to this preb. in succession to M. Adam de Essebi; suit with M. Ralph de Hecham (cf. above) 16 Dec. 1243 (Reg. Innoc. IV no. 331, cal. CPL I 203). Papal mandate concerning composition whereby Ralph was to pay him 50 marks p.a. dated 13 July 1258 (Reg. Alex. IV no. 2627, cal. CPL I 358). Also papal notary, brother of M. Gerard medicus of Parma, and chanc. of Milan (cf. CPR 1247-58 pp. 40, 262, 278, 474). Still alive mid-Sept. 1261 (Diplom. Docs. I no. 331 p. 231).]

M. Simon de Micham

Can. (unident. preb., list 65). Inst. to this preb. as chanc. 29 March 1272 in succession to Ralph de Hecham (Rot. Gravesend p. 119; list 4). Occ. as preb. several times (app. 2; C. 427; IV/E.4/Brixworth/36, Idbury/7; Reg. Sutton II 55; CCR 1272-9 p. 438). Became dean, el. 11 July 1287, and transf. to decanal preb. of Heytesbury (lists 2, 35).

M. Ralph of York II

Can. (preb. Horton, list 37). Inst. to this preb. by proxy in succession to Simon de Micham, 15 Jan. 1288, after some delay (Reg. Sutton II 63). Occ. as preb. several times (ibid. pp. 70-1, 80, IV 154-6, 161-2). Chanc. from 1288; d. 21 Nov. 1309 (list 4).
