PREBEND

Barton St David (Som.): two portions in 1086, one held by Norman as tenant of Roger de Courcelles and the other by Edmund son of Pain as tenant of the kg. (DB I 94b, 98d). Nunney (Som.): Turgis of William de Mohun in 1086 (ibid. 96c).

Advowson of Barton and moiety of advowson of Nunney gr. by Robert de Meisy to form a preb. 1213 × 19 (Cal. I 70). 60s from Nunney church afterwards gr. to communa by bp. Jocelin (ibid. p. 149). Chapter had suit against Henry de Montfort over advowson of Nunney 1245 (ibid. p. 123).

Valuations 1291 £10 13s 4d (Taxatio p. 197a: Barton church not among prebs.); 1299 12m (Cal. I 256, as preb.).

Nicholas de Walton

First occ. as can. 22 March and 23 May 1249 (below, app. 3 no. 45 C D, as 'de Wilt"). Can., bp.'s clerk and rector of Chewton Mendip (Som.), disp. by bp. to hold addit. benefice 1250, conf. by pope 3 and 18 March 1251 (CPL I 269 = Reg. Innoc. IV no. 5179). Gr. of house in Wells in succession to M. Adam of Gussage 20 Jan. 1257 (Cal. I 138). Last occ. as can. 5 March 1260 (below, app. 3 no. 45 G). D. as this preb. before 27 Apr. 1264 (CPR 1258-66 p. 315).

Nicholas son of Nicholas [of Bitton]

Rector of Dogmersfield (Hants), (fn. 1) papal disp. to hold two addit. benefices 24 Feb. 1263 (Cal. I 103, not in CPL). Royal gr. of this preb. in succession to Nicholas de Walton, s.v., 27 Apr. 1264 (CPR 1258-66 p. 315). Occ. as can. 10 Feb. 1267 (Chart. Bath II 68 (no. 322)). Treas. by 17 June 1269, last occ. 12 March 1282 (list 6).

Next identified preb. is William de Carleton, who occ. as can., chapl. of Francesco Caetani cardinal-dcn. of S. Maria in Cosmedin, 8 May 1299 (Reg. Bon. VIII no. 3050, omitted in CPL I) and 25 March 1301 (CPL I 595 = Reg. Bon. VIII no. 4022); d., his preb. vacant, by 3 May 1311 (Reg. Droxford fo. 35r; 2 Fasti VIII 19). Perhaps to be identified with William de Cherleton, succentor by 4 Apr. 1297, to 29 June 1302, and was still alive 1327 (list 8).
