PREFACE

THE Lincoln Record Society has already printed two volumes of Lincoln Wills registered in the District Probate Registry at Lincoln (volumes 5 and 10 of the Society's publications). The present work continues the series of wills from June 1530 down to June 1532, when the second Book of Wills in the Lincoln Consistory Court ends. Now, therefore, abstracts of all the wills in this Book and in the first Book, labelled respectively "1506 &c.," and "1520–31," have been printed, together with the wills, belonging to the same period, which have been collected from the other courts in the District Registry. A few earlier wills which escaped notice when volume II was printed have been included in the present work. In making the abstracts, the principles laid down in the two previous volumes have been followed.

The thanks of the Society are once more due to the successive Registrars of the Lincoln District Probate Registry for access to the documents under their charge; and to the clerks of the Registry for their courtesy.

The Index of Persons and Places has been prepared by Miss F. E. Thurlby under the Editor's direction.
